Dosa, Oothappam & Idli

Dosa, Oothappam & Idli – Trademarked as south Indian breakfast dishes, they have wide acceptance across the world. These main course dishes are the favourite of many, and often taken as evening snack or supper. There are many variants for these three, yet core items for batter remain the same – Raw rice, idli rice, urud dal (black gram) and fenugreek seeds, apart from adding a little boiled rice, ginger, curry leaves, coriander leaves, green chillies etc (optional). Rava batter is also used as alternative. When toppings of onions, carrot, coriander leaves, paneer etc are done on crispy dosa, it turns oottappam. Idli is a very healthy steamcooked breakfast items. All these three rice dishes have sambar and chutney as best combo, alongside Uzhunnu Vada (black gram/Urud dal vada). Sambar and chutney are also prepared in many ways, and very often includes desi flavours. Also read: How to make soft idlis and dosa?
