Top 50 Duets sung by Kishore Kumar in Bollywood
Most recently I prepared a list of Top 50 solo songs sung by Kishore Kumar. The list also included 50+ popular solos, in fact, a total of 110+ Kishore Kumar’s top solo songs. Now it’s my attempt to make a list of his most popular duets, he sang aside female co-singers. He shared a great rapport with the celebrity composer R. D. Burman and his wife, Asha Bhosle, and the trio has given some of the amazing gems of Hindi music, mostly in the era of 1970s. In short, the trio revolutionized the singing style of duets in the 1970s, and most of them are still popular, remixed by youngsters and even included in films as well. Asha Bhosle is the playback singer who gave maximum duets with Kishore Kumar (with Mohammed Rafi too). Yet Lata Mangeshkar has rendered her voice aside Kishore da for some of the extremely popular Hindi duets since 1950s. In this article, I would like to take the reader a ride through the eras of 1950s – 1980s, and have picked some of the best Kishore Kumar duets of this era. I might have missed many great songs, yet it’s my humble attempt and a tribute to the most celebrated singer of Hindi film scene. I have sorted the songs in alphabet order and prepared a list of 50 duets sung by Kishore Kumar in Bollywood. And here it goes! Also read top 10 duets of Kishore & Asha.
Top 50 duets sung by Kishore Kumar
1. Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re from Sharmilee – The song featured Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee Gulzar, and sung by Lata Mangeshkar aside Kishore Kumar. Music was composed by S. D. Burman and lyrics penned by Neeraj. Movie’s music was extremely popular, and contained some of evergreen solos sung by Kishore Kumar. Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaye Re is the only duet of the album.
2. Aankhon Aankhon Mein from Mahal – Kalyanji Anandji composed the film’s music and both the duets of the movie, sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle got noticed. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics. Dev Anand-Asha Parekh pair remained one of the sought jodis of 1960s since Jab Pyar Kise Se Hota Hai got released. Dev Anand is perhaps the only actor, whose songs succeeded with the voice of Rafi and Kishore equally. Both the voices fitted perfect for Dev Anand’s style, voice and mannerisms, just like a jigsaw puzzle. No other Bollywood actor earned this designation. No doubt!
3. Aap Ki Aakhon Mein from Ghar – R. D. Burman’s music was the USP of the film, and Aap Ki Aakhon Mein featuring Rekha and Vinod Mehra was the single duet of the album. Gulzar penned the lyrics. Also read: Top 50 songs of Kishore Kumar – R. D. Burman Combination.
4. Aasman Ke Neeche Hum Aaj from Jewel Thief – Jewel Thief remains one of the highly acclaimed works of Kishore Kumar aside S. D. Burman before he became a celebrated singer. The movie released in 1967 also had a wonderful solo track of Kishore Kumar featuring Dev Anand and Tanuja, Yeh Dil Na Hote. Kishore sang two songs for Dev Anand and both got noticed. In fact S. D. Burman frequently used Kishore da’s voice to record many of hit songs of Dev Anand since 1950s. This popular duet featured Vyjayanthimala aside Dev Anand. Majrooh Sultanpuri penned lyrics for its songs except sad solo of Lata Mangeshkar, “Rula Ke Gaya Sapna” which was written by Shailendra.
5. Ab Chahe Maa Roothe Ya Baba from Daag: A Poem of Love – This duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar became extremely popular in 1973 and was listed at #7 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1973. Music was composed by Laxmikanth-Pyarelal who received a Filmfare nomination too. Lyrics were penned by Sahir Ludhianvi, and the song featured Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, one of the top pairs of 1970s.
6. Acha To Hum Chalte Hain from Aan Milo Sajna – This extremely popular track composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal is regarded as a phenomenon. The song featuring Asha Parekh and Rajesh Khanna got noticed for its catchy lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi, lovely music and filming and of course the beautiful rendition by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. It’s the single duet of Kishore Kumar in this album.
7. Are Yaar Meri Tum Bhi Ho from Teen Devian – Kalpana was one of the three female leads of Dev Anand in this film, who wonderfully danced in this merry track. Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the lyrics. One of the top hits of Kishore and Asha Bhosle in the 1960s, music was composed by S. D. Burman, who was pretty confident in recording Dev Anand’s songs with Kishore Kumar’s voice. Despite being talented, Kishore and Asha Bhosle received tough competition from Rafi and Lata throughout 1950s and 1960s, before they emerged as the leading playback singers of Bollywood in the 1970s. Thanks to some of the wonderful tunes composed by R. D. Burman to the duo.
8. Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein from Ajnabee – This highly romantic monsoon song featuring Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman is extremely popular among youngsters as well, since its remixed version came out. The duo was paired for the first time in this thriller, and the movie is still remembered for this sizzling track. Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar sang its original version, penned by Anand Bakshi. The movie had four songs, and all of them had Kishore’s voice.
9. Bhool Gaya Sab Kuch from Julie – Julie is still remembered for its bold subject and highly romantic tracks composed by Rajesh Roshan. All the songs were extremely popular, and this romantic duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar was filmed on Lakshmi and Vikram Makandar. It’s the only romantic duet of this album. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics of all the tracks except the English song, ‘My heart is beating’, which featured Sri Devi as a youngster. Rajesh Roshan received his Filmfare Award for Best Music Director through Julie.
10. Chal Kahin Door Nikal Jayen from Doosra Aadmi – Music was composed by Rajesh Roshan and lyrics authored by Majrooh Sultanpuri. This Yash Chopra romantic film starred Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Raakhee and Shashi Kapoor in pivot roles and 5 out of its 6 tracks were duets sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Nazron Se Kah Do, Aao Manayen Jashn-E-Mohabbat, Ankhon Mein Kajal Hai and Jaan Meri Rooth Gayi are other duets sung by the duo. Chal Kahin Door Nikal Jayen featured Rakhee and Rishi Kapoor.
11. Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya from Paying Guest – This 1957 B&W film starred Dev Anand and Nutan, and still popular for the songs composed by S. D. Burman. Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the lyrics. Chhod Do Aanchal Zamana Kya is a peppy number featuring the lead stars and sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. This song has been remixed several times because of its popular, yet its original version holds a vintage beauty. The movie also included the popular Lata solo, Chand Phir Nikla.
12. Dekha Ek Khwab from Silsila – When the list of Kishore-Lata duets are prepared, this song can never be missed. The movie was released at a time when rumours of Amitabh-Rekha relationship were at its peak. Ladki Hai Ya Shola and Sar Se Sarke are other duets sung by Kishore and Lata for this film. Music was penned by Shiv-Hari, and the lyrics were written by Javed Akhtar. The song got noticed for the amazing screen chemistry between Amitabh and Rekha, and also blossoming tulips filmed at Keukenhof tulip gardens in The Netherlands and some parts in Pahalgam. 13. Dil Ki Baaten Dil Hi Jane from Roop Tera Mastana – The song featured Mumtaz and Jeetendra, and Jeetendra entertained audience with his dance moves. Lata Mangeshkar is the co-singer and music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Asad Bhopali penned the lyrics.
14. Ek Baar Muskura Do from Ek Baar Muskura Do – Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar sang this soft title track featuring Tanuja and Deb Mukherjee. This song is used for the title card. Music composed by O. P. Nayyar was the plus point of the film, and one of the rarest songs sung by Kishore Kumar for the great composer. 15. Ek Haseena Thi from Karz – Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim and Simi Garewal were featured in the song, featured towards the climax of the film. Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar did playback singing and Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics. The movie also included the popular duet, Mein Sola Baras Ki. Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed the chartbuster tracks of the album, and also went away with Filmfare award for best composer. Its background music and signature tune too were well received. All the fast tracks including Ek Haseena Thi were marked as trendsetters in the late 1970s, which very soon paved way to ‘Disco Era’ of 1980s.
16. Ek Mein Aur Ek from Khel Khel Mein – The song featuring the real-life couple, Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor was a very huge chartbuster once it got released, and its dance moves were well appreciated. The film’s music was composed by R.D. Burman and the lyrics written by Gulshan Bawra. Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle sang three duets for the film. Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karenge and Aye Lo Pyaar Ke Din were the rest two duets. The movie also included the extremely popular duet sung by Asha and Pancham da, Sapna Mera Toot Gaya featuring Aruna Irani.
17. Gaata Rahe from Guide – The movie had 10 tracks, and Kishore’s voice was used by Sachin Da to record a single track, and quite amazing, it became the most popular song from the album. Lata Mangeshkar sang this duet aside Kishore da, and it was filmed on Waheeda Rehman and Dev Anand. Songs were written by Shailendra. 18. Gore Rang Pe from Roti – One of the top duets featuring Mumtaz and Rajesh Khanna, music was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It’s the only duet featured in the album, and was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Lyrics are penned by Anand Bakshi.
19. Gum Hai Kise Ke Pyar Mein from Rampur Ke Laxman – A beautiful and highly romantic duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, it got noticed for its beautiful frames and the leading pair, Randhir Kapoor and Rekha. Music was composed by R. D. Burman and beautiful lyrics are penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. No doubt, the song is just amazing! Kishore Kumar sang some of the amazing songs for Randhir Kapoor like Jawani Diwani, Kal Aaj Aur Kal, and songs of Rampur Ke Laxman can never be missed.
20. Haal Kaisa Hai Janab Ka from Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi – The song featuring real-life couple is cute to watch onscreen, and Kishore Kumar exhibited some of his distinct mannerisms throughout. 21. Hamein Aur Jeene Ki Chahat Na Hoti from Agar Tum Na Hote – The title track had several versions used as theme song. Apart from the solo versions sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar, it had a duet version too. Music was composed by Rahul Dev Burman and lyrics written by Gulshan Bawra, and Rajesh Khanna and Rekha were featured in this duet song. Kishore Kumar received Filmfare award for best playback singer for its solo version.
22. Hum Aur Tum Tum Aur Hum from Daag: A Poem of Love – The movie starred Sharmila Tagore and Rajesh Khanna as lead pair, and its climax is quite different from Indian concept. This duet was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Rajesh Khanna, and composed by Laxmikanth-Pyarelal. Sahir Ludianvi penned the lyrics. The movie included some of the extremely popular songs of the lead singers.
23. Hum Dono Do Premi from Ajnabee – The first Bollywood song to be fully shot on the top of the train, it was the first film of the lead pair too. It’s one of the popular romantic tracks of the film, and featured Rajesh Khanna and Zeenat Aman. Lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi, and music composed by R. D. Burman.
24. Jaane Jaa Doondta from Jawani Diwani – This evergreen track composed by R. D. Burman is widely regarded as one of the best duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. All the songs were smash hits. The song featured Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bhaduri, and the actress was seen in an extra-glamorous avatar in the film throughout. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics. The movie featured three duets of Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar.
25. Jai Jai Shiv Shankar from Aap Ki Kasam – This extremely popular track was composed by R. D. Burman and penned by Anand Bakshi. This popular dance track featured Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz, who remained one of the top pairs of 1970s. This extremely popular song was listed at #2 on Binaca Geetmala annual list 1974. Lata Mangeshkar sang this duet aside Kishore.
26. Jeevan Ki Bagiya Mehkegi from Tere Mere Sapne – The song featuring Dev Anand and Mumtaz is one of the top romantic songs of the time. Music was composed by S. D. Burman and lyrics penned by Neeraj, who was associated with the legend for a few memorable albums like Prem Pujari during the last phase of his career. Lata Mangeshkar is the female voice. Ae Maine Kasam Li is yet another popular romantic song of the duo.
27. Kaanchi Re Kaanchi from Hare Rama Hare Krishna – Yet another popular duet featuring Dev Anand and Mumtaz, the movie too was a box office hit. Music was composed by R. D. Burman, and sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. Pancham da showed his versatility as a music composer by incorporating different genres of tunes in a single album.
28. Kaate Nahi Katte from Mr. India – One of the last hits of the legendary voice, the movie was released a few months before Kishore Kumar left us so unexpectedly at a comparatively young age. He was the main male voice of the album who sang for Anil Kapoor. Kishore Kumar sang two duets – Kaate Nahi Katte and Karte Hain Hum Pyaar Mr. India Se aside Alisha Chinai and Kavita Krishnamurty respectively. Kaate Nahi Katte featuring Anil Kapoor and Sridevi is framed as one of best sensual songs ever pictured on big screen. Javed Akhtar penned the lovely lyrics and music composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
29. Karvatein Badalti Rahe from Aap Ki Kasam – This duet of Kishore and Lata is widely regarded as one of the top romantic tracks composed by R. D. Burman. All the songs were well received by critics and audience alike. This romantic track was penned by Anand Bakshi and featured Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. However the movie was only average at box office. It’s the remake of Malayalam cult classic, Valvemaayam.
30. Kehdo Tumhe from Deewaar – One of the popular songs featuring Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh, most recently its remixed version was used in movie, Badshaho. The song has been successfully remixed several times before. Music was composed by R. D. Burman, and Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar sang this duet. The song penned by Sahir Ludhianvi was an instant chartbuster.
31. Kora Kaagaz Tha from Aradhana – The solo tracks (Roop Tera Mastana and Mere Sapnon Ki Rani) and this particular duet aside Lata Mangeshkar established Kishore Kumar as the most popular singer of 1970s. When S. D. Burman fell ill and couldn’t complete the work, he assigned the task to his son R. D. Burman, who used Kishore Kumar’s voice to record some of the memorable tracks for Aradhana, and the rest is, as they say, ‘It’s history!’ This particular track is rumoured to be composed by Pancham da himself, also the much popular – Mere Sapnon Ki Rani. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics, and since then the writer has been associated with R. D. Burman throughout 1970s and later. Also read: Top 16 albums of S. D. 32. Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai from Rocky – The movie marked the acting debut of Sanjay Dutt and he was featured aside Tina Munim in this evergreen romantic song composed by R. D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar is the co-singer of this evergreen track. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics. The movie also featured the dance track, Aa Dekhe Zara, a popular duet of Kumar and Lata.
33. Machalti Hui Hava Me Chham Chham from Ganga Ki Lahren – The title track featuring Kishore da himself and Kumkum was the highlight of the film. Lata Mangeshkar sang this duet aside Kishore da. Music was composed by Chitragupt and lyrics penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The romantic duet featuring the same pair, Chhedo Na Meri Zulfen is yet another popular duet sung by Kishore Kumar.
34. Main Pyaasa Tum Sawan from Faraar – The romantic track featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. The song also had a solo version sung by Kishore. Yet the duet version is popular. Music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and the lyrics of the song have been penned by Rajendra Krishan. 35. Nahi Nahi Abhi Nahi from Jawani Diwani – The sizzling featured Jaya Bhaduri and Randhir Kapoor, and is one of the finest duets sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics, and R. D. Burman composed the tunes. The song’s remixed version with original voices by D J Aqeel was an instant chartbuster.
36. O Mere Raja from Johny Mera Naam – Pal Bhar Ke Liye and O Mere Raja sung by Kishore Kumar are the top tracks of the album composed by Kalyanji Anandji. Background score composed by duo is also considered a benchmark. Hema Malini and Dev Anand were featured in O Mere Raja, sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Lyrics were penned by Indeevar. The movie was a huge blockbuster, which earned a business of 5-million per territory at a time when tickets were priced at a maximum Rs 2.50.
37. O Meri Soni Meri Tamanna from Yaadon Ki Baaraat – R. D. Burman’s music score played a significant role in the success of this film. The movie had two duets in Asha Bhosle & Kishore Kumar’s voice and O Meri Soni Meri Tamanna is definitely the best. The song featured Zeenat Aman and Vijay Arora. This particular track has been remixed and revived several times since late 1990s. The movie also included the very popular and rare duet of Rafi and Kishore in the movie’s climax – Yaadon Ki Baaraat, which films the reunion of 3 brothers after 15 years. The song also had another version Aamir Khan was seen as a child actor, which narrowly missed this list. Lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, who formed a successful trio with composer R. D. Burman and filmmaker Nasir Hussain, since Teesri Manzil got released in 1966.
38. Panna Ki Tamanna Hai Ki from Heera Panna – Zeenat Aman and Dev Anand made a lovely pair onscreen in the 1970s, and they also appeared as siblings in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Lata Mangeshkar sang this popular duet aside Kishore and music was composed by R. D. Burman. Anand Bakshi penned its very popular romantic lyrics.
39. Tumko Bhi To Aisa Kuchh Hota from Aap Aye Bahaar Ayee – It has been only in rare occasions where Kishore Kumar’s voice has been used to record a song for Rajendra Kumar, and hence this beautiful duet sung by Kishore and Lata definitely deserves a position in my list. Laxmikanth Pyarelal gave rest of the tracks to his favourite Rafi. It was one of the rare associations of LP for any movie featuring Jubilee star. Kishore has sung for Rajendra Kumar only in three occasions – Aap Aye Bahaar Ayee (1971), Sunehra Sansar (1975) and Aahuti (1978). Though 1960s was the glorious era of Jubilee star, and Kishore has been the ghost voice for a few popular stars in the era like Dev Anand, it took many years for music directors to finally try Kishore’s voice for Jubilee star, and Laxmikanth-Pyarelal was the first one to do so. In fact Kishore Kumar rarely sang for other actors in the 1950s and 1960s, except when specially demanded by S. D. Burman for Dev Anand. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics.
40. Sa Re Ga Pa from Abhinetri – The movie was a flop at box office. However the movie got noticed for its melodious tracks composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. This popular duet featuring Hema Malini and Shashi Kapoor was the highlight of the film, and Laxmikant Pyarelal used Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar’s voice to record the song. Lyrics were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. It’s the single Kishore Kumar track featured in the album.
41. Salam E Ishq from Muquadar Ka Sikander – Kalyanji Anandji gave some of their finest compositions for Muquadar Ka Sikander, and this particular duet featuring Rekha and Amitabh truly deserves a standing ovation. Though the movie was nominated for several major Filmfare Awards including best male and female voices, the blockbuster film didn’t receive any. Film’s director Prakash Mehra penned lyrics for this popular song, while the remaining songs were written by Anjaan. Lata Mangeshkar & Kishore Kumar sang this duet. 42. Suniye Kahiye from Baton Baton Mein – This popular duet of late 1970s featured Amol Palekar and Tina Munim, and was sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar. All tracks of the film were composed by Rajesh Roshan and penned by Amit Khanna. Though not Kishore Kumar songs, Baton Baton Mein included some of the popular songs such as Na Bole Tum and Uthe Sabke Kadam.
43. Tere Bina Zindagi Se from Aandhi – Whenever R. D. Burman’s best compositions come into discussion, songs of Aandhi can never miss it. In fact, the popular duets of Kishore and Lata – Tere Bina Zindagi Se and Tum Aa Gaye Ho are included the favourite songs – playlist of many, including film celebrities. No doubt, Aandhi is a masterpiece work of the composer.
44. Tere Mere Milan Ki Yeh Raina from Abhimaan – This S. D. Burman track was filmed in film’s climax, and remained extremely popular. The song featured real-life couple, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Badhuri, and Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar rendered their beautiful voices for this track. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote the lyrics. Burman da won Filmfare Award for Best Music Director for Abhimaan. The movie had two Kishore Kumar tracks and the second one was a solo – Meet Na Mila Re Mann Ka.
45. Thoda Hai Thode Ki Zaroorat Hai from Khatta Meetha – The song was noticed for its picturization of dreams. The song featured almost all actors of the film, and actor Amitabh Bachchan in a cameo role. Rajesh Roshan composed music, Gulzar penned lyrics and Kishore Kumar & Lata Mangeshkar rendered their voices for this evergreen classic. Since 1970s, Rajesh Roshan composed music for many of Rakesh Roshan films, and Kishore Kumar’s voice has been used in most these cases.
46. Tu Tu Hai Wohi from Yeh Waada Raha – One of the finest compositions of R. D. Burman ever, the song is extremely popular even after 35 years. The song featured Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillion and sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Gulshan Bawra penned the lyrics. The song also had one more version featuring Tina Munim. The movie had some of the finest duets like Ishq Mera Bandagi Hai sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.
47. Tum Aa Gaye Ho from Aandhi – As I told earlier, the controversial film is best remembered for its music. The song composed by R. D. Burman and written by Gulzar featured Bengali’s iconic actress Suchitra Sen aside Sanjeev Kumar. The movie included three duets of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, and the third one is – Is Mod Se Jate Hain.
48. Wada Karo from Aa Gale Lag Jaa – The songs of the film composed by R. D. Burman were instant chartbusters. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na is yet another popular Kishore song aside child singer Sushma Shrestha. This romantic track starred Sharmila Tagore and Shashi Kapoor, and lyrics were penned by Sahir Ludhianvi. Wada Karo was sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
49. Yeh Duniyawale Poochenge from Mahal – Asha Parekh and Dev Anand were featured in this popular duet sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi. Music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Also read: Top 10 duets of Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle.
50. Yeh Raaten Yeh Mausam from Dilli Ka Thug – Kishore Kumar has been a jack of different trades during his first phase of his actor. He tried his luck in acting and music direction, apart from singing, where he received limited success. Since he rose to superstardom since early 1970s, he concentrated on singing only.
