Kudamaloor St.Mary’s Church, Changanassery, is 8 km away from Kottayam main town. Here, Curry Nercha is offered by couples who wish to have kids. This is also known as Thamukk nercha among the believers. Banana is the major ingredient of this offering, and the believers prepare it together. Let me give you its recipe, which is dated more than 3 centuries.
Tamukk Nercha - recipe

Ingredients for Curry Nercha/Tamukk Nercha:

  1. Coconut – 5
  2. Raw rice powder – ½ kg (Pachari)
  3. Jaggery – ½ kg
  4. Palayamkodan banana (a small type of banana) – 30
  5. Puzhukkalari (parboiled rice – brown colour) – ½ kg
  6. Chukk (dried ginger), Cumin seeds and Cardamom – as per taste

How to prepare Curry Nercha/Tamukk Nercha?

  1. Wash Pachari and powder it.
  2. Dry-fry (without oil) puzhukkalari and grind it also.
  3. Remove the banana skin and slice it into thin pieces.
  4. Melt jaggery and remove impurities.
  5. Extract coconut milk from the coconut.
  6. Mix coconut milk, raw rice powder (pachari) and jaggery together and boil it well.
  7. Add bananas and stir well, according to the cooking of rice.
  8. Add puzhukkalari powder along with dried ginger, cumin seeds and cardamom.
  9. Stir it well and take your payasam from the flame.
  10. It should not be too thick or too watery. It should be similar to payasam.
