What are the health benefits of gooseberry?

Gooseberry is widely used for preparing pickles and is known for its rich iron content. It also has a significant value in Ayurveda, and used for the preparation of many medicines. Known for its cooling effects, gooseberry is used for Dhaara treatment in Ayurveda, and do you know it has many health benefits as well? Here I list a few of them. Also read: Panchakarma treatment.

To gain body weight and beauty – Mix green gooseberry juice with equal amount of honey and serve daily on a regular basis. It can improve your body weight, beauty and health.

Good for diabetics  – Add a little turmeric powder to green gooseberry juice and serve twice daily. It controls diabetics.

Remedy for mouth ulcers – Add black jeera powder to green gooseberry juice and serve it. It’s good for wounds in mouth.

For allergy – Mix a little gooseberry powder with ghee and serve on a regular basis to get rid of allergies.

Improves immunity – Make a fine paste of gooseberry (remove skin) and sesame seeds. Serve a big spoon daily. It improves body defense mechanism.

For intelligence – Steam cook gooseberry and serve four of them with melted jaggery on a daily basis. It improves health, gains body weight as well as brain power.

For sex drive – If frigidity in females and low libido in men occur due to diabetics, serve nutmeg powder mixed with gooseberry on a regular basis. It’s effective for both sex groups if the condition is due to diabetics. 

Remedy for premature hair graying – Make a fine paste of gooseberry, henna, kayyonni (“False Daisy” or “Bhringraj”), aloe vera and curry leaves, and apply on scalp and hair. Later wash the hair. There is another remedy. Take 12 gooseberries and remove seeds. Make a fine paste adding rice starch and apply on hair and scalp. Wash your hair after half an hour. Do it on a regular basis to get better results. It’s also good to wash hair using gooseberry boiled water.

To keep hair graying at bay – Eat gooseberry on a regular basis. You can also boil water adding gooseberry and drink regularly. Same water can be used for hair wash/normal bath too.

For body strength and radiance – Soak green gooseberry in water for 12 hours, remove seed and cook adding water. Add thrice the quantity of sugar candy (Kalkandam), and eat it daily on a regular basis.

For sore throat and Phlegm – Take gooseberry, Kadukka (Haritaki), Thippali (Long Pepper) and Thannikka (Belleric Myrobalan) in equal quantities, make a fine powder and serve it adding ghee.

For brown hair – If you want black hair, crush gooseberry, add curd and apply on hair. Wash your hair after half an hour.
