Unakka Chemmeen – Kovakka Ularth recipe

Ingredients for Unakka Chemmeen – Kovakka Ularth (Dried Prawns – Ivy Gourd Ularth):

  1. Dried prawns – ½ cup
  2. Ivy gourd – ½ kg
  3. Green chillies – 6, cut lengthwise
    Chilli powder – 1 small spoon
    Turmeric powder – ½ small spoon
    Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
    Salt – For taste
    Pot tamarind (Kudam puli) – 2 pieces
    Coconut (not too ripe) – ½ (sliced into thin pieces)
  4. Oil – 3 big spoons
  5. Garlic – 5 cloves, crushed
    Shallots -5, crushed
  6. Red chilli powder – ½ small spoon
    Turmeric powder – ½ small spoon

How to prepare Unakka Chemmeen – Kovakka Ularth (Dried Prawns – Ivy Gourd Ularth)?

  1. Clean dried prawns and keep aside.
  2. Cut the ivy gourd lengthwise.
  3. Cook prawns and ivy gourd along with ingredients no: 3, sprinkling a little water.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and sauté ingredients no: 5.
  5. Add the powders and fry again.
  6. Add cooked prawns-ivy gourd mixture and fry till the contents turn dry.
