Padma Kumar – Malayalam Television Actor of ‘Kudumba Vilakk’ fame

Padma Kumar is a popular character artist of Malayalam Television screen who gained instant fame playing ‘Motta Police’ in popular soap, ‘Kudumba Vilakk’. Though he was called for a brief role, his role clicked the right chord with audience and it turned a full-fledged role. His character in this series is Narayanan Kutty.

Padma Kumar was called for ‘Kudumba Vilakk’ for 2-3 days shooting

When he was called for 2-3 days shooting for the popular family drama, he was first sent back soon after finishing the schedule saying ‘Please don’t feel bad. We can’t call you further’. He was called for the 112th episode of the soap, and when the show completes 800 episodes, he is still there as viewers favourite, ‘Motta Police’. Though his character name in the show is Narayanan Kutty, he is called by the nick name, Motta Police. He frequently plays the role of the saviour of the female protagonist, whenever her husband and his gf characters torture and cheat her!

His look appears more like American Police

While studying at Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram, he got addicted to Western style and retained Western looks since then. After graduation he moved to Bangalore to pursue MBA. He had a lot of people in his friends circle those days, who used to gather at a nearby restaurant. Once he expressed his passion for acting to one of those friends, G. A. Lal who introduced him to Malayalam film director Viji Thampi. Later that friend fell off from train and died.

He appeared on stage for a play while studying in class 10. He also did mimicry those days. Before meeting Thampi, when one of his close friends made a serial, he was rejected a role. He even hurt him with heart-breaking words. Glamour was a big factor those days, and he was 23 then. Even many students at college used to tease him for scarred face. So, he didn’t take those comments serious, as he was aware that even Yesudas’ and Mammootty’s voices were initially criticized. He even had horrible experiences when sent back from shooting locations without giving any role. When he was in his 20s, actors with good skin tone and less scars on face were given first preference. Now cinema has advanced forward, where talent comes first before glamour. The trend has changed in the last one decade.

Viji Thampi offered him the first role for the show, Black And White

He made his small screen debut through TV series Black And White, followed by Silence. He also played brief roles in films like Satyameva Jayate, Bada Dost, Krithyam and Nammal Thammil – all directed by Viji Thampi. He was 25 years old when he faced camera for first time.

Since he had dreams to fly to US, without waiting for more roles, he moved there. He worked as a banker for 9 years in Bank of America since 2010. When he started thinking to follow his heart and passion, he decided to fly back to India. Since the age of 10, he has been carrying acting dreams in his soul. First film he did at that time was ‘Moonwalk’.

A brief note on TV actor Padma Kumar’s family life

Padma Kumar hails from Vanchiyoor in Thiruvananthapuram city. He lost his father at the age of 7. It was a big void, which remained unfilled forever. He lost someone who could have guided him at right age. His mother worked in court and brought up four children. She is not alive now. Padma Kumar is unmarried and is waiting for the right partner. His elder brother is doing business in the city. Younger brother is a dentist and their single sister is settled in Canada with her family.

He is a lover of beaches and seas

His hobby is to swim in seas. To swim 60-70 meters inwards gives him a thrilling experience. Once he travelled 6 hours above Los Angeles only to watch Hawaii beach. He has also visited the famous Gold Coast Beach of Australia. But he has an opinion that Kovalam beach of Kerala is beautiful among all beaches of world tour guide. While most beaches have cold water, Kovalam waters are lukewarm even at 2 am. Swimming into seas is dangerous, as it can attract and drag you and Padma Kumar had experienced it a few times. Whenever he gets time, he loves to spend time in Kovalam beach.
