Daboo Malik – Bollywood music composer and singer who tuned ‘Thoda Sa Pyar Hua Hai’

Daboo Malik, younger brother of music composer Anu Malik is also a composer and singer who works in Bollywood. He writes film scripts and has also hosted a few TV entertainment and musical shows of Doordarshan in the late 1990s. He is the son of Bollywood composer of yesterdays – Sardar Malik and nephew of legendary Urdu poet and lyricist Hasrat Jaipuri. Both his sons – Amaal Mallik and Armaan Malik are successful names in Bollywood music of present times. His niece Anmol Malik (Anu Malik’s daughter) is also a Bollywood playback singer, thus representing third generation of their family in Bollywood music. As a music composer, Thoda Sa Pyar Hua Hai from Meine Dil Tujhko Diya is his popular song, apart from a few more Salman Khan songs.

Daboo Malik was born in 1963 in Mumbai into a family with both filmy and music background. Born as the son of music composer Sardar Malik, he too decided to follow the footsteps of his father and brother. He has one more brother. Initially he was interested in acting, because of his good looks. He also got bit roles in Bollywood movies of 1990s such as Baazigar, Beta Ho To Aisa, Tiranga etc. In fact in the 1990s he dabbled with different kinds of roles – as an actor, singer, TV host and composer, and finally settled with music composition. He also tried luck in screenwriting and wrote the script of musical thriller – W.

It was screenwriter Salim Khan’s encouragement which prompted him to settle with music direction. On a meeting, when Khan advised to take music direction just like his father and elder brother, he changed his mind set and started a new beginning. Salim Khan even told that he was born to become a music composer. Daboo Malik also got opportunity to compose songs for a few movies of Salim Khan’s sons such as Meine Dil Tujhko Diya, Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge, Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam, I Proud to Be an Indian, Kissan etc. Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar (2001) was his first movie as a music composer.

Though he had stint with acting, composing and hosting shows, he couldn’t succeed as his elder brother in Bollywood. But both his sons are now top musical names of Bollywood. His elder son Amaal Mallik is a music director, singer and lyricist, who composed songs for Jai Ho, Khoobsurat, Airlift, Sanam, M.S. Dhoni : The Untold Story etc apart from several background scores. His younger son Armaan Malik is a singer and actor, and now a leading playback singer of Bollywood and south Indian movies.

1. His real name is Israr Sardaar Malik. He took the name ‘Daboo Malik’ for his professional career.

2. He played the brief role of Ravi Shukla, Shilpa Shetty’s obsessive lover in Baazigar. His character is killed by Shah Rukh’s negative character in the film. Interestingly his elder brother Anu Malik composed its popular songs.

3. His family is related to Ghulam Hassan Shaggan, Pakistani classical music singer of the Gwalior Gharana.

4. He has hosted musical and entertainment shows for Doordarshan in the late 1990s. Teatime Manoranjan is one such show.

5. As a music composer, he is best known for his tunes for Salman Khan films, and their home productions.

6. He is always engaged in new ideas – From acting to singing, from writing lyrics to composing tunes, he also loves to write scripts, plays and direct full length films, plays and short films. He feels that he is not much focused as his children.

7. Hasrat Jaipuri is his maternal uncle. 

8. The surname ‘Malik’ was inherited from maternal side by his father. 

9. Daboo Malik’s second brother Abu Malik is a composer best known as a businessman and an organizer of live shows in India and abroad with more than 10000 live shows to his credit. He has penned a book named ‘Rantings of a Madman‘ and is a contestant of Sony TV’s Bigg Boss Season – 13 in 2019.

10. His nephew Adaar Malik (Abu Malik’s son) is a standup comedian.

11. He essayed Bheeshma’s younger version, Devavrat in B. R. Chopra’s Mahabharat in the late 1980s.
