Churakka – Chemmeen Curry

Ingredients for Churakka Chemmeen Curry (Bottle Gourd – Prawns Curry):

1. Grated coconut – One

2. Coriander powder – 1 tbsp

    Chilli powder – 1/2 tbsp

    Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

3. Oil/coconut oil – 2 tbsp

4. Onion – One, sliced lengthwise

    Ginger – One piece, sliced lengthwise

    Green chilli – 4, slit

5. Bottle gourd cut into 1-inch pieces – 1/2 kg

    Medium shrimp cleaned – 250 g

    Salt – As needed

6. Mango pieces (not very sour) – 1/2 cup

7. Coconut oil – 1 tbsp

8. Mustard seeds – 2 tsp

9. Dried chilli – 2, broken

    Curry leaves – One sprig

10. Kashmiri chilli powder – A pinch

How to prepare Churakka – Chemmeen Curry (Bottle Gourd – Prawns Curry)?

1. Grate the coconut and extract half a cup of first milk and two cups of second milk. Keep aside.

2. Make a fine paste of the powders listed under section 2.

3. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the items under section 4. When the raw smell disappears, add the ground mixture and sauté without over-browning.

3. Add the ingredients under section 5 and sauté. When the water dries up, add the mango pieces and the second coconut milk and cook.

4. Add the first coconut milk. When it starts to boil, remove from the heat.

5. Heat coconut oil in a small pan, splutter mustard seeds, then add dried chilli and curry leaves.

6. Mix a pinch of Kashmiri chilli powder, stir once and pour the tempering over the curry.
