Ujjayinee Roy – South Indian playback singer and television actress

Ujjayinee Roy is a south Indian actress and playback singer of Tripura origin. Initially she started her career as a playback singer in south Indian film industry in 2007, did a couple of character roles in Tamil movies, and later moved to television with her acting roles. As a playback singer she was given the first break by A. R. Rahman in 2007 through Tamil movie, Azhagiya Tamil Magan. Later she sang in Kannada, Telugu and Hindi films, before concentrating on to her acting career. She has been a part of Tamil TV shows, Valli, Chandralekha and Roja. She has also released private albums like “The Elektrik Circus” in association with her German husband and musician Ed DeGenaro, and also “This Feels Right”, “Novocain For The Soul” etc.

Ujjayinee Roy is a trained singer and classical dancer from Agartala, Tripura. She started singing for AIR and Doordarshan at the age of 7. She took formal training in Hindustani music from Ganesh Dev Burman and Ramendranath Dey. Later she started performing for public shows and also for singing reality shows in the second half of 1990s. In 2007 Rahman offered her the opportunity to sing two songs – “Nee Marilyn Monroe” and “Valayapatti Thavile for Tamil movie, Azhagiya Tamil Magan. The following year she debut Telugu film industry with the song, “Ghanana Ghanana” for King, and marked her Bollywood debut with “Naacho Re” for Jai Ho.

In 2016 she recorded the Tamil song, “Halena” for Iru Murugan composed by Harris Jayaraj before she switched to acting roles in TV shows. Chamundeshwari Ashok for Valli was her first acting role on television, followed by supporting roles in Chandralekha and Roja. She is married to German guitar player and music producer, Ed DeGenaro. They met for the first time in 2011 and she has collaborated for his fusion album “Holiday in Madras“. They got married in 2017. She is currently based in Chennai.

1. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer.

2. She was seen in brief roles in Tamil movies – Saa Boo Thiri (2009) and Thani Oruvan (2015).

3. She started two musical bands – Tribe and Aurko during her graduation days at Maharaja Bir Bikram College.

4. She participated in singing reality shows – SaReGaMa and Pop Stars (Channel V), before starting her playback singing career.

5. She became a graded artist and composer of AIR at the age of 18.
