V. K. Prasanth – Legislator & Former Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation

V. K. Prasanth is an Indian politician from the state of Kerala. A member of Communist Party of India (Marxist), he served as the youngest Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation between 19 November 2015 and 24 October 2019. He was only 34 when he got elected as Mayor. In October 2019 state assembly bi-elections he got elected from Vattiyoorkavu defeating Congress candidate K. Mohankumar over 10,000 votes.

V. K. Prasanth hails from Kazhakootam, Thiruvananthapuram. As he belonged to a non-political background, his parents were initially concerned when he got into active politics as a student leader during his pre-degree classes at St. Xavier’s college, Thumba. However he was supported by his grandma, who used to open door to him without the knowledge of his parents, when he reaches late night. He later completed law studies from Thiruvananthapuram Law Academy, and at the age of 23 became a member of Panchayat. Then only his parents realized his political strength.

After 10 years he got elected as the youngest Mayor of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation in 2015. As a mayor, 100 wards came under his control. In 2019, after K. Muraleedharan’s legislature seat became vacant following his victory at assembly elections, V. K. Prasanth was fielded by LDF at Vattiyoorkavu, and he won the elections with a huge margin. He is married to Raji, and has one daughter, Alia.

V. K. Prasanth – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. He prefers to take lunch kit from home even during his busy years of political career.

2. He is often addressed as ‘Bro’ by his admirers.

3. He became a star of people on social media during 2018 Kerala Floods, when he spearheaded the relief operations of the city, by sending food, clothing and other materials to the flood affected Malabar area.
