Ribhu Dasgupta is a Bollywood film director representing the new generation, best known for exploring thriller themes for his movies and TV series, whether it is psychological, mystery, spy, or action thrillers. Te3n, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is one of his major works belonging to the mystery thriller genre. His remake movie, The Girl on the Train (2020), starring Parineeti Chopra, also belongs to the same genre. His debut film, Michael (2011), is a psychological thriller, while his debut TV series, Yudh, starring Big B, is a psychological thriller, and his 2019 web television series, Bard of Blood, starring Emraan Hashmi, is a spy thriller. He, along with his elder brother Birsa Dasgupta represents the third generation of filmmakers from his family.

Ribhu Dasgupta belongs to a family of filmmakers from Kolkata, Bengal. His grandfather, Harisadhan Dasgupta, was a pioneer of Bengali documentary cinema, and his grandmother, Sonali Dasgupta, was a Bengali screenwriter. His father, Raja Dasgupta, and his elder brother, Birsa Dasgupta, too, are filmmakers, while his mother, Chaitali Dasgupta, is an actress and TV presenter. His sister-in-law Bidipta Chakraborty (wife of Birsa Dasgupta) is a Bengali actress. Ribhu followed the footsteps of other male members of the family and chose filmmaking as his career. 

In 2004, he moved to Mumbai and stayed with his elder brother to pursue his graduation studies in English. However, he dropped his studies and chose a career in filmmaking. He started his career as an assistant director in the industry. Amrit Sagar’s 1971 was his first film as an assistant director. He also worked under Anurag Kashyap, who gave him his first break through his production venture, Michael. From there on, he directed several thrillers. His thriller, Te3n, received rave reviews from critics, though it was not a big success.

1. His paternal grandmother, Sonali Dasgupta’s second husband, is Italian film director, Roberto Rossellini, a pioneer of Italian neorealist cinema.

2. During his childhood days, he thought that he would become a cricketer. But filmmaking was in his blood, and he joined the entertainment industry.

3. He joined the film industry as an assistant director of Anurag Kashyap’s team, where his elder brother was also working.

4. Apart from movies, he has also directed TV ads and corporate films.

5. As Bidipta Chakraborty is his sister-in-law, he is related to National award-winning actress Sudipta Chakraborty, also, Bidipta’s sister.
