Natural Care Tips for your hair

Hair

Hair fall, dandruff, hair breakage, premature greying… these are problems that trouble the hair.

All of these can make anyone feel distressed. For hair care, there are thousands of remedies available on the internet and even in a friend’s beauty bag. Along with that, many cosmetic products are available in the market. But before using anything on the hair, a question arises in the mind: Will the chemical ingredients in these products make the hair strands more problematic? Will I lose hair?

For complete hair care from root to tip and for a healthy hair routine, we can rely entirely on natural ingredients. The shampoo used for washing the hair, the conditioner that gives softness, and even hair packs that solve hair problems can all be prepared in a completely natural way.

To remove dirt from the scalp

Using Shikakai and soap nuts:

Boil 5 grams each of reetha (soap nuts), shikakai, and liquorice (Iratti Madhuram) in 100 ml of water. After boiling, set aside 20 ml from this mixture. Add the required amount of water to the remaining liquid and use it to wash the hair. The liquid that was kept aside is used to prepare the conditioner.

Iratti Madhuram

liquorice (Iratti Madhuram)

Mix 25 grams of shikakai, 50 grams of reetha, and 25 grams each of amla (gooseberry), hibiscus flower, neem leaves, tulsi, fenugreek, green gram powder, and brahmi (all ingredients dried and powdered; the final quantity after drying). When washing the hair, take the required amount from this powder and use it on moist hair. Wash it of later.

Tie 5 soap nuts and 1 tablespoon fenugreek in a cloth pouch. Put it in water and boil. Squeeze the pouch well into the water. Use this water to wash your hair.

You can prepare a herbal hair wash. Soak 4–5 soap nuts, 6–8 each of shikakai and dried gooseberry, and 1 tablespoon fenugreek overnight in enough water. The next day, add a handful of curry leaves and boil on low flame for 10 minutes. After it cools, strain and use.

Soak 6 shikakai pods and 6 dried gooseberries in water for 8 hours. Boil this, strain, and use the liquid as shampoo.

Mix 3 tablespoons of shikakai powder, 2 tablespoons of fenugreek powder, 2 tablespoons of hibiscus flower powder, and 1 tablespoon of dried gooseberry powder. This makes a ready-to-use shampoo powder.

Other herbal shampoos:

Soak 4 hibiscus flowers in 1/2 cup water for 20 minutes. Add 1/4 cup aloe vera stem and grind well. Apply this on the hair while bathing.

Mix 1 tablespoon gram flour (besan), 2 tablespoons fenugreek powder, and 1 teaspoon flaxseed powder well. Add green tea to this mixture and use it to wash your hair.

Soak a handful of curry leaves in hot water and leave it overnight. The next day, strain and take only the liquid. Mix 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel into it and use it to wash your hair.

This is a natural shampoo that can be made quickly with a few ingredients. Crush 4 hibiscus flowers, 10 hibiscus leaves, and a handful of tulsi (basil) leaves with a little water. Apply it on the scalp and wash.

For soft hair

After washing hair with naturally prepared shampoo, here are some natural conditioners to apply.

To the previously prepared 20 ml reetha–shikakai mixture, add 20 grams of aloe vera pulp and the white of one egg. Mix well, apply on the hair, and wash off after 30 minutes. This is an excellent conditioner for dry hair.

Mix 1/4 cup cooked raw rice with 1/4 cup aloe vera gel well. Add 1/2 teaspoon oil and 3 drops of rosemary oil. Mix and apply on the hair strands. Wash off after 10 minutes.

Soak 1/4 cup flax seeds in water and boil well. After boiling, strain and take only the gel. Add 1/2 teaspoon olive oil and honey to this. Add 3 drops of any essential oil of your choice. Mix well and apply on the hair. Wash off after 10 minutes.

Mix 1/4 cup coconut milk and 1/4 cup water in a bowl. Add 2 teaspoons melted shea butter, 1 teaspoon jojoba oil, and 4 drops rosemary oil. Mix well and store in a bottle. After applying this, you do not need to wash your hair.

Many problems, many oils

For hair growth:

Here is an Ayurvedic oil for hair growth. Grind 15 g Triphala powder, 20 g aloe vera, 15 g henna leaves, and 10 g each of poovamkurunnila leaves (Little Ironweed), cumin, and shallots into a paste. This paste is called kalkam. Add this to 1 litre coconut oil along with 1 litre each of blue pea leaf juice (Neelayamari swarasam/ butterfly pea flower/Aparajita/Shankhupushpam) and false daisy juice (kayyonni). Heat and prepare the oil until the paste becomes sand-like in texture.

Soak Ashoka flowers in coconut oil and keep it in sunlight for 7 days. Heat 1 teaspoon of this oil. Add 2 g camphor, juice of half a lemon, and the white of one egg. Mix well, apply on the scalp, and wash off after 30 minutes.

This oil helps hair growth and hair health and does not need heating. Instead, add 4 hibiscus flowers, 10 g each of black cumin, manjistha, fenugreek, 6 butterfly pea flowers, and 2 stalks of curry leaves to 100 ml coconut oil. Keep it in sunlight for 10 days. Then strain and use.

For washing hair:

Now let us see what can be used to wash hair. Soak 10 g fenugreek in 1 cup rice water. Grind it well. Add enough water or rice water and use it to wash hair. This is very good for removing dandruff.

To prevent premature greying:

You can prepare an oil to prevent premature greying. Grind 10 g each of black cumin, curry leaves, Triphala powder, hibiscus leaves, and 5 g fenugreek. Take 1 litre each of false daisy juice (kayyonni), henna leaf juice, and blue pea leaf juice (Shankhupushpam flower juice). Add the ground paste and juices to 1 litre coconut oil and heat it well. The oil is ready when it reaches a sand-like consistency.

Hair packs are also needed

Solution for hair fall:

Take 5 g hibiscus leaves, neem leaves, fenugreek powder, and Triphala powder. Add 25 g aloe vera pulp and mix well. Apply this on hair and wash off after 30 minutes. This hair pack is better than oil for reducing hair fall.

To make hair healthy and shiny:

Mash 1 ripe Kerala banana well. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil to this and apply on the hair. Wash off after 20 minutes. This is good for hair health and shine.

Soak 4 tablespoons oats in 1 cup milk. Grind it into a paste-like consistency, then add a little almond oil and mix well. Apply on the hair and wash off after 30 minutes.

Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon honey into 1 cup curd. Apply this as a hair mask. Wash off after half an hour.

Solution for dandruff:

Add water to powdered curry leaves and make it into a paste. Apply on the scalp and wash off after 30 minutes. This helps reduce scalp itching and dandruff, and also promotes hair growth.

Grind equal quantities of basil leaves, curry leaves, and henna leaves. This is a suitable hair pack for hair growth and dandruff control.

To promote hair growth:

Add 1 teaspoon rosemary, 2 tablespoons flax seeds, and 1 tablespoon crushed beetroot to 1 cup water. Boil it well, then strain and use as a hair mask. Wash off after 30 minutes.

Boil 2 tablespoons rosemary, 1 tablespoon fenugreek, and 2 sprigs of curry leaves in 1 cup water and reduce it to three-fourths of a cup. Pour into a spray bottle and spray onto the hair. There is no need to wash the hair afterward.

Take 4 hibiscus leaves, 2 sprigs of curry leaves, and 1 tablespoon black cumin seeds. Make a fine paste and apply this pack on the hair and wash off after 20–30 minutes.

Soak 1 small spoon each of fenugreek, black cumin, and green gram in half a cup of rice gruel overnight. Grind it the next day and use it to wash the hair. You can also wash the hair directly with the diluted rice gruel (starch after cooking rice).

Mix 1 tablespoon each of lemon juice and honey into 1/4 cup of curd. Apply on the hair and wash after 15 minutes. This hair pack also provides conditioning benefits.

To add fragrance to hair

dry shampoo for hair
