Jaspinder Narula – A distinct and powerful voice who remained in spotlight throughout the second half of 1990s and early 2000s. 80s kids and 90s kids won’t forget her voice easily, especially if you are a fan of Bollywood songs. Jaspinder recorded around 100 Bollywood songs in her brief, yet glorious stint in Bollywood. Read her detailed biography here.
In most cases, she recorded a single track in a whole album, and sometimes two. Yet those songs stood out in the whole album. Here I list 10 of my most favourite Bollywood songs sung by Jaspinder Narula. While I filtered her top songs, I had to leave out some of her top hits like Judaai Judaai, Tujhe Dekh Ke Dil Mera Dole, Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare etc. Please excuse.
Jaspinder Narula – Top 10 Bollywood Songs of My Favourite
1. Tare Hain Barati – Virasat (1997), Anu Malik, Javed Akhtar

The first song Jaspinder Narula recorded for Bollywood was “Dhin Tak Dhin” from Bade Miyan Chote Miyan composed by Viju Shah. She got this opportunity through Kalyanji of Kalyanji-Anandji duo, father of Viju Shah. But the first album with her songs which came out was Judaai, and the first recorded song for this album was Mujhe Ek Pal Chain Na Aaye (Judai Judai). This song was also extremely popular those days.
Though Judai Judai, where Jaspinder Narula was one among the three singers became popular, Jaspinder’s first blockbuster hit was Tare Hain Barati from Priyadarshan’s Virasat, composed by Anu Malik. As she’s extremely talented and owned a unique voice, this single song was enough to establish her career in Bollywood.
It was a duet with Kumar Sanu, filmed on Anil Kapoor and Pooja Batra in her debut role. The song which beautifully explained the concept of marriage, its promises and desires of a girl, written by Javed Akhtar was filmed royally with a lot of diyas (oil lamps), traditional costumes and customs.
2. Nayyo Nayyo – Soldier (1998), Anu Malik, Sameer
Songs composed by Anu Malik for Soldier played an important role in the huge success of the film. Most of the peppy numbers created by Anu Malik were huge chartbusters. Tera Rang Balle Balle (Nayyo Nayyo) is a dance jugalbundi between the lead actors – Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol, in a fun mode. Though their screen chemistry in the film was well received and the film became a huge hit, they never came together as a full-fledged romantic pair in any movie later.
When Anu Malik chose Sonu Nigam to sing a couple of songs for Soldier (the composer was frequently experimenting with the singer’s voice those days), nobody imagined that this dance number will become such a huge hit. Less-heard voices back then – Sonu Nigam and Jaspinder Narula definitely gave a refreshing look to the song and made it memorable. The choreography done by Ganesh Acharya worth praises too.
3. Title track of Pyar Toh Hona Hi Tha (1998), Jatin-Lalit, Sameer
Bryan Adams’ “Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?” was sampled in this popular track sung by Jaspinder and Remo Fernandes, and this composition is more like westernized than an Indian tune. The movie starred real-life couple Kajol and Ajay Devgn, and Jaspinder Narula won the prestigious Filmfare award for best playback singer for this song, when she was just 2-year-old in the industry. It’s her single Filmfare award. She also bagged Screen Awards for the same.
4. Sabki Baaratein Aayi – Jaanam Samjha Karo (1998), Anu Malik, Majrooh Sultanpuri

The song was originally meant for Alka Yagnik and the composer Anu Malik already recorded the happy version in her voice. He kept the sad version for Narula. But the director Andaleb Sultanpuri’s father, the legendary lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri who penned its lyrics, insisted that both the versions should be recorded in Jaspinder Narula’s voice. Rest is history! The song is so beautiful because of Narula’s unique voice. As Majrooh Sultanpuri said, this song was written (meant) for her! Needless to say, many composers later used her voice for Urmila.
5. Hata Sawan Ki Ghata – Hello Brother (1999), Sajid-Wajid, Faiz Anwar
This fun song was filmed with Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji, where both are teasing each other. The song was well choreographed, too. Babul Supriyo sang this duet with Jaspinder Narula. In most of her films, she owns a single song, and it becomes a hit. That’s what we say, the real talent and powerful singing. Sajid-Wajid were newcomers those days, and they did a wonderful job.
6. Tere Pyar Mein Main Marjawan – Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet (1999), Anand-Milind, Sameer

If I am given the task to choose my favourite song sung by Jaspinder Narula, I may choose this song aside Tere Rang Balle Balle. She sang Tere Pyar Mein Main Marjawan so beautifully without flaws, and I believe it’s her most underrated song. Roopkumar Rathod and Blaaze are her co-singers. Anand-Milind also used her voice to record the title song.
7. Jeevan Mein Jaane Jaana – Bichhoo (2000), Anand Raj Anand, Sameer
Harry Anand is a less-heard name in the musical space, and he came to limelight in the late 1990s with his music album, Chaahat. Cashing that popularity, Anand Raj Anand used his voice to record this romantic track of Bichhoo aside Jaspinder Narula. The song was filmed on Bobby Deol and Rani Mukerji.
8. Bumbro Bumbro – Mission Kashmir (2000), Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Rahat Indori (Traditional song)
It’s a traditional Kashmiri song reused in the film. It’s a traditional dance sequence filmed on Preity Zinta and Hrithik Roshan who played lead roles. Interestingly, the voices of both Sunidhi Chauhan and Jaspinder Narula were used for this song, while Shankar Mahadevan, who co-composed this song rendered his voice for Hrithik Roshan. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy blended the powerful voices of both Sunidhi Chauhan and Jaspinder Narula perfectly for Zinta, and gave positive vibes for listeners.
9. Morey Piya – Devdas (2002), Ismail Darbar, Sameer

Ismail Darbar experimented with the singer’s voice in this album by giving her the most difficult song. While the light lines were sung by the newcomer Shreya Ghosal for Aishwarya Rai, the heavy voice of Jaspinder Narula was used by the composer for Kiran Kher, who is seen dancing in ecstasy in this song. The song also featured some intimate romantic sequences of Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai.
Morey Piya is the single song penned by Sameer. Needless to say, he was the top lyricist of the 90s, writing songs like a mechanical robot. The majority of the Bollywood songs of the 1990s are registered in his name. For the album Devdas, 8 out of 10 songs were written by Nusrat Badr, while Birju Maharaj penned lyrics, composed the tune and also did playback singing for the song, “Kaahe Chhed”.
10. Hai Ishq Khata – Deewangee (2002), Ismail Darbar, Nusrat Badr
Deewangee is one of the finest works of Ismail Darbar, and right from the days of ‘Sabki Baaratein Aayi’ song, many composers have used Jaspinder Narula’s voice for recording songs Urmila Matondkar. Hai Ishq Khata was a dance sequence filmed on Urmila, and Akshaye Khanna was featured in the song.
Sanjeev-Darshan had earlier used Jaspinder Narula’s voice for Urmila in the 2000 film, Deewane. The movie featured three songs of Urmila sung by Narula – “Ae Dil”, “Ishq Da Gunjal” and “Sajna Ne Phool Marya”. Musical album Deewane was a major hit. Similar to the similarity of film titles, released within a span of 2 years, both films starred Ajay Devgn in lead role.

Author’s note: It has been 5.5 years since I prepared a musical list of chartbuster songs. After 5.5 years of hiatus, I prepared a list of chartbuster hits of Dharmendra as his birthday anniversary gift. After that, I prepared this list, and fully enjoyed listening to Jaspinder Narula’s songs after a long time. It’s my first list in the ‘New Generation’ song category after 5 years!
I have always been a fan of her powerful and very unique voice. Her voice was far ahead of its time and was not widely accepted in those days, when sweet, soft, low-pitched voices were usually preferred for heroines. Even when her voice was chosen, it was mostly for dance and fast numbers that demanded a high-pitched voice. If she belonged to the present generation, she would have been one of the most demanding voices of today.
As generations change, preferences and trends do change, and we have to accept it. Signing off!
