Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is a successful film director, screenwriter, and producer, working in Bollywood. She made an impressive debut with the acclaimed Nil Battey Sannata in 2016, starring Swara Bhaskar. She also directed the Tamil version the same year titled, Amma Kanakku, starring Amala Paul. Bareilly Ki Barfi, starring Rajkummar Rao, Ayushmann Khurrana, and Kriti Sanon, is her most popular film. She is the wife of noted filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari, best known for directing Dangal and Chhichhore, and the upcoming epic saga, Ramayana.

Ashwiny was born in Mumbai on 15 October 1979. She is of Tamil origin. She grew up in the suburb of Mulund. Art attracted her since her childhood days. A brilliant student in academics, she completed her studies from SIES College of Commerce and Economics. She worked in the advertising agency Leo Burnett (India) for long 15 years, and won many awards and recognitions. She resigned as the executive creative director of Leo Burnett before pursuing her film journey.
Her first short film won the Dadasaheb Phalke Award
In 2012, she made her first short film, What’s for Breakfast, which won the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. She joined Bollywood in 2016 with the film, Nil Battey Sannata, which was remade into multiple South Indian languages. Since then, she directed around 8 films, co-scripted and produced a few more films, too.

Most of her directorial ventures with women-centric scripts met with critical acclaim, including Nil Battey Sannata, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Panga, and the 2026 OTT film, System. Her husband, Nitesh Tiwari, has co-scripted movies like Bareilly Ki Barfi, which became commercial hits. Nitesh also co-scripted Nil Battey Sannata. Ashwiny, also works as a creative director in her husband’s productions.
They got married in 2005 and are parents to twin children, a boy and a girl. They met in 2002 while working together in the advertising profession. They worked together as creative executives at the advertising agency Leo Burnett before their Bollywood debut.

1. She is a gold medalist in commercial arts from Sophia Polytechnic, Mumbai.
2. She began her career in advertising as a trainee at Leo Burnett in 2001. After three years, she joined McCann Erickson, but she returned to Leo Burnett a year later and had a long association.
3. Her debut film won two Filmfare awards – Best Director and Best Debut Director. Bareilly Ki Barfi won the Zee Cine Awards for best director. The movie was also nominated in the same category at the IIFA Awards and Screen Awards.
