Top 20 Kitchen Safety Tips You Need to Know

Kitchen is the powerhouse of your home. But carelessness can lead to many accidents, injuries and even death. While the housewife is busy with her preparations, she may be bit careless. Also a naughty kid can do anything in kitchen which is not supposed to do. While using gas stoves and electrical appliances in kitchen, many safety rules are to be strictly obeyed and here are 10 of them.

1. While you are cooking, never keep things near the fire that can easily caught fire, for instance: kitchen towels, papers etc.

2. Your kitchen should be well-ventilated, provided with enough doors and windows that can be used for emergencies if needed. Air should freely flow in your kitchen, where your stove and oven are placed.

3. All the electrical and electronic appliances used in kitchen should be ISI marked to prevent damages. Never use items that don’t meet the minimum standards and hallmarks provided by government.  

4. Always use rubber tubes and regulators of high quality for your stoves as suggested by companies.

5. Use burners at the backside of the gas stove when only needed, only when all hobs are in use.

6. If possible use a thick apron while you are in kitchen. If not, never use shawls which easily fly in air. Keep your sari pallus tied, so that they won’t catch fire easily.

7. Tie your hair while you are working in kitchen. Never let your hair loose.

8. Never use free flying curtains inside kitchen, near to windows where stove is placed. There are more chances for curtain to catch fire.

9. Electronic wiring switches and plug points should be fixed in such a way that there is at least 1 meter distance from electronic equipment.

10. If possible, fix gas stoves at a safe place not easily accessible to small kids. While you are not in kitchen, it’s always a better choice to turn off the gas. If naughty kids are at home, it’s a must.

11. Train your kids from younger age to stay at a distance away from gas stoves.

12. If you feel the smell of gas inside kitchen or home, turn off the gas knob. Never switch on electronic appliances or light fire.

13. Make a habit to turn off the hob before you take the prepared food from stove.

14. If oven catches fire, switch off the oven. Never open the oven door, as there are more chances for fire to spread. Allow the fire to burn out on its own. In most cases it happens so. If not, dial some emergency number.

15. If the vessel in gas hob catches fire, never try to remove it. Instead switch off the knob to avoid damages.

16. Clean your gas stove and oven very often. Always check if your gas regulator and knob have any problems. If so, never use it before repairing or replacing the damaged parts.

17. Keep your sharp knives at safe positions from the reach of children. Also, you too handle knives with care to avoid injuries. Never leave them in kitchen careless.

18. Keep medicine for burnings and cuts at kitchen itself. You don’t know when you are in need.

19. Keep cooked food and pots away from reach of children. Also, rice cooker should be placed at a safe distance if you have placed rice with boiling water inside.

20. If you are away from home for a vacation, switch off the gas connection.
