Sangili Murugan is a film actor, film producer and scriptwriter of Tamil cinema. As an actor, he is best known for playing character roles on screen since the late 1970s. He has also played several negative and grey-shaded roles during his younger days. As a film producer, the psychological thriller – Raatchasan (2018) is one of his most commercially successful films in recent times. As an actor he plays senior character roles now. Thevar Magan, Jigarthanda, Mayavi, Namma Veettu Pillai, Enga Ooru Kavalkaran, Kodi Parakuthu, Maari 2, Yaman, Kabali, Manithan (2017) etc are some of his noted roles on screen. Sakkarai Panthal, Pasamulla Pandiyare, Enga Ooru Kavalkaran, Nadodi Pattukkaran, Periya Marudhu, Paandi Nattu Thangam etc are among his production ventures since the mid-1980s.

His birth name is Muthuvel Servai Murugan. He was born in 1945 in Pothumbu village of Madurai. He marked his screen debut with the 1979 film Ponnu Oorukku Pudusu, where he played the role of a constable. He used Murugan as his screen name for his debut flick. Suvar Illadha Chithirangal was his second release. As an actor, he got his first break through Oru Kai Osai, released the following year. Since then, he has been regular in Tamil cinema, playing memorable character roles, and has completed 4 decades in the industry. In 1987, he turned into a screenwriter and producer with the film Enga Ooru Pattukaran. Since then, he has produced around a dozen Tamil films. He scripted a few of his production ventures, too.
