2016 is a year of biopics and thrillers for Bollywood, and two thrillers with Amitabh Bachchan playing the pivot role gained a lot of attention and positive reviews this year – Wazir and Te3n. No doubt over the years Amitabh has not lost his popularity, and he has also experimented with his roles in his natural acting style which garnered him positive response from critics as always, and definitely both these thrillers belong to this category.

Te3n is definitely a feather in this actor’s acting cap, and no doubt, one of the best woven and gripping thrillers in the recent times. Perhaps we may get opportunity to watch Amitabh Bachchan doing similar type of thrillers in distant future. I watched both these revenge sagas of Amitabh Bachchan in a short interval of time and noted some striking similarities. The real suspense of both these thrillers is only decoded in films’ climax.
Wazir was directed by Bejoy Nambiar, and the movie also starred Farhan Akhtar and Aditi Rao Hydari in pivot roles. It told the agonies of a wheelchair-bound chess grand master and an Anti-Terrorism Squad officer, who lost their single daughters in different incidents, and how a strange friendship develops between the two. The movie is all about the revenge of both these murders.
Te3n definitely has an upper hand on Wazir. Set in the backdrop of Kolkata, the movie was directed by Ribhu Dasgupta. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan also played noted roles in this thriller. The movie is all about a 70-year old middle class man who is set to find the man behind the kidnap of his single granddaughter, and the way through this the script is woven and the movie progress by, makes it ‘worth-a-watch thriller’. Big B is at his best playing a helpless grandfather who witnessed the little girl’s death.
It’s clear both these critically appreciated thrillers are revenge sagas. But the most striking co-incidence that in both the movies, the character played by Big B plays a nice hide n seek game to take revenge of the murderer who was responsible for his daughter/granddaughter’s death. In Wazir, he plants a fictional character ‘Wazir’ into the brain of Farhan Akhtar who set into the mission to punish the person responsible for Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter’s death.
Though it is entirely a fresh script and no direct links with ‘Wazir’, in Te3n the actor plots a plan to bring out 8-year old kidnap incident back to present, and even succeeds in punishing the kidnapper for the kidnap which was actually done by him. After watching this gripping thriller, I could easily feel the strange and common twist of the movie in the climax similar to Wazir, and liked both these movies.
