Mackerel Stew (Ayala Stew)

Ingredients for Mackerel Stew (Ayala Stew):

1. Mackerel (Ayala) – 4

2. Onions chopped – 1

3. Green chillies – 4, cut lengthwise

4. Pepper powder – ½ tsp

5. Garlic crushed – 4 cloves

6. Ginger chopped lengthwise – 1 piece

7. Thick coconut milk – 1 cup

8. Second extract of coconut milk – 1 cup

9. Rice flour – 2 tsp

10 Curry leaves – 2 stems

11. Lemon juice – 1 tsp

For tempering:

12. Coconut oil – 2 table spoons

13. Red chillies (broken into four) – 2

14. Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp

15. Curry leaves – 2 stems

How to prepare Mackerel Stew (Ayala Stew)?

1. Using a knife make cuts in mackerels.

2. Cook mackerels in second extract of coconut milk adding onions, green chillies, ginger, garlic, curry leaves and salt.

3. Add a little coconut milk to rice flour to make a paste, and pour remaining coconut milk to it.

4. Pour this coconut milk to curry. Reduce the flame.

5. Keep stirring, and cook till curry boils.

6. Heat coconut oil and add fenugreek seeds.

7. When it’s fried, add red chillies and curry leaves, and add to mackerel stew.

8. Add lemon juice too.

9. You can serve this stew with rice pathiri or podi pathiri.
