Dev Anand – Top 10 Romantic Tracks
The evergreen hero of Bollywood mesmerized audience through his distinct style for several decades, and he is known for his talent and significant contributions onscreen and off screen of Bollywood. In the romantic era of 1960s, he was one of the top A-grade artists, and when ‘Rajesh Khanna Tsunami’ swept the whole nation in the early 1970s, he was only the single romantic hero who sustained in Bollywood charming millions, and he romanced almost all Bollywood divas of 1970s on silver screen. That’s why Evergreen Hero – tag got permanently added to his name. To some extend Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor too extended their careers in romantic roles in the 1970s, though both charmed audience with their punch dialogues and action mostly.
In the 1950s and 1960s Mohammed Rafi’s voice was linked with Dev Anand to great extent and songs were mostly composed by S. D. Burman. But the composer used to record Dev Anand songs in Kishore’s voice since 1950s though not regularly and most of those songs are evergreen classics. Guide and Jewel Thief of 1960s are the best instances. In those days, Kishore Kumar was trying his best to establish himself as a successful actor, and he did playback singing for his films mostly. Apart from his films, he also did playback singing for Dev Anand since 1950s, and in most cases, S. D. Burman was the composer. He rarely sang for other heroes in the 1950s and 1960s, except Dev Anand, and S. D. too used to explore the voices of both Rafi and Kishore for Dev Anand, and mostly used both these voices to record at least one track for an entire album.
In the 1970s, Kishore Kumar’s voice got permanently associated with Dev Anand, and R. D. Burman gave music to maximum of his films who finished many of his father’s works too. After doing several struggles and experimenting with different kind of roles in the 1950s, Dev Anand finally established himself as a romantic hero in the 1960s. Both in the 1960s and 1970s, this romantic hero of Bollywood has given several evergreen songs to music fans to remember, and it’s not possible to list the best 10 among those countless songs. Through this column I would like to specify only his romantic tracks.
1. Gaata Rahe Mere Dil of Guide – Dev Anand gained international attention through this cult classic which also starred Waheeda Rahman. Its script, acting skills or music, the movie excelled in every department. Its timeless songs done by S. D. Burman – Shailendra combination are counted among the best in the decade of 1960s. Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar rendered their beautiful voices for this particular track.
2. Tere Mere Sapne of Guide – No doubt, songs of Guide is the masterpiece work of S. D. Burman. As the list about only the romantic songs of Dev Anand, I would love to pick only two romantic tracks. S. D. Burman was frequently used for composing songs for Dev Anand’s movies, and he regularly picked Mohd Rafi. Din Dhal Jaaye and Kya Se Kya are other popular solo songs sung by Rafi for Dev Anand in Guide.
3. Khoya Khoya Chand of Kaala Baazar – Kaala Baazar was one of the earliest movies of 1960s which gave him the popular ‘romantic hero’ image, and Mohammed Rafi’s voice too played a significant role. Dev Anand was most successful with Waheeda Rahman in the romantic era of 1960s. S.D. Burman and Shailendra created music for the film with Rafi’s mesmerizing voice.
4. Yeh Duniyawale Poochenge of Mahal – This suspense thriller was directed by Shanker Mukherjee, and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Asha Parekh looked extremely beautiful in this song and Dev Anand in his ‘romantic ada’ as always. The song was sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle. The movie also included the popular duet, Aankhon Aankhon Mein Hum Tum.
5. Phoolon Ki Rang Se of Prem Pujari – This cult classic marked the directorial debut of Dev Anand in the year 1970. This song gained attention for the beautiful lyrics penned by Neeraj. As usual, S. D. Burman’s music got associated with Dev Anand’s Prem Pujari. But Kishore Kumar’s voice was used this time for this solo track. The movie included the popular song ‘Rangeela Re’ pictured on Waheeda Rehman and Dev.
6. Choodi Nahi Yeh of Gambler – Though he was associated with several crime thrillers and suspense dramas, Dev Anand always sustained his romantic image. In fact this versatile actor excelled in both his romantic and action roles. Music of Gambler was composed by S. D. Burman, and sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. The movie also included extremely popular solo tracks – Dil Aaj Shayar Hai sung by Kishore Kumar and Mera Man Tera Pyasa by Mohammed Rafi.
7. Dil Pukare of Jewel Thief – One of the best suspense thrillers of 1960s Dev Anand was paired with Vyjayanthimala in this film, on whom this romantic song was pictured. The duet belongs to Rafi-Lata combination. The movie also included the sizzling – Raat Akeli Hai, pictured on Tanuja and Dev Anand. All the songs were composed by S. D. Burman, and the movie also included chartbusters like Yeh Dil Na Hote Bechara, Hothon Mein Aisi Baat, Aasman Ke Neeche and Rulake Gaya Sapna Mera. Except Lata solo, Rulake Gaya Sapna, all songs were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.
8. Aise Na Mujhe Dekho of Darling Darling – Zeenat Aman and Dev Anand formed an amazing sizzling pair in the mid-1970s. They also worked together as siblings in Hare Rama Hare Krishna. One of the best songs sung by Kishore Kumar for Dev Anand, its remixed version became extremely popular in the mid-2000s. Its beautiful lyrics were penned by Anand Bakshi, and composed by R. D. Burman. The song gives us reminiscences of yet another romantic Dev Anand song of 1960s – Aise Toh Na Dekho from Teen Deviyan.
9. Panna Ki Tamanna Hai Kii of Heera Panna – Another beautiful duet pictured on Zeenat Aman and Dev Anand, its music was composed by R. D. Burman. 10. Abhi Na Jao Chodkar of Hum Dono – No other song can end this list as perfect as this ‘parting’ song. The movie released in 1961 starred Dev Anand in double role, and this evergreen romantic song was pictured on Dev Anand and Sadhana. Mohammad Rafi and Asha Bhosle sung the duet composed Jaidev. Lyrics written by Sahir Ludhianvi also gave a great impact in Bollywood music as well as the hearts of music fans. The movie also included the popular solo pictured on Dev Anand – Mai Zindagi ka saath nibhata and the popular bhajan – Allah tero naam pictured on Nanda.
