10+ Useful tips to conserve antique properties

Old is Gold! It’s not a surprising that people are always attracted towards antique and traditional items. For many persons they are priceless gifts as they carry some nostalgic memories of childhood or fascinating life just before marriage. That’s the reason why people try to conserve those items than dumping them in some store room. Also antique items are precious for its traditional value and hence new items can never compensate their real value in any aspect. A little care and certain measures as a daily habit can really keep them shining for years.  Let me provide a few tips to conserve them as such for long years retaining them as a precious asset always.

1. While cleaning old furniture never use moist cloth. Instead clean it daily using dry cotton.

2. Polish your furniture once in every year. It helps them to retain its antique property.

3. Never clean antique furniture in excess. As years pass by, they develop a thin layer on its surface adding more beauty to such ‘old’ items. Rubbing them too strong may cause damage to that layer. It may shine better but loses its antique element.

4. Conserve antique paintings with great care. Never allow even a scratch on it. If it’s an old painting, chances more to see moisture behind the canvas. So, clean gently those using dry cloth every day. But never make any scratches.

5. You can clean old glass paintings using dry cloth. Always check if dust particles have got inside the frame of picture.

6. Never place paintings under the direct exposure of sunlight, air or water moisture.

7. Never fold or tear carpets and rogues. Frequent washing is difficult as they are too thick. Instead remove dust particles regularly from such carpets. Instead of folding, roll them so that folds never appear. Also place them in less used places to avoid excess dust.

8. Antique crockery can be dust removed using dry cloth. Wash them in water only if you need to treat your guest. After use, dry well before placing them back.

9. Old silver plates and vessels can be conserved by polishing them once in a while.

10. If black spots have appeared on silver vessels rub them using tamarind before polishing. You can regain its lost pride.

11. Porcelain, glass and crystal elements are easy breakable. Hence never place them along with other plates in dish washer while cleaning. Also never use strong detergents to clean them.
