Top 25 Udit Narayan Bollywood Songs Composed by Anu Malik

Udit Narayan and Anu Malik, both these artists are related to Bollywood music of 1990s and first half of 2000s, and they have been frequently associated in many musical projects. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, they established their respective careers almost at the same time period. Since 1992 they have worked in many Bollywood films. Yet their association got noticed only since 1995. By that time, both had cemented their positions in Bollywood. This combination has given some wonderful songs to Bollywood. A few became chartbusters while a few others got semi-hit tag.

“Jawani Deewani” for Chamatkar was one of the early works. “Dil Mera Kehta Hai” from Police Officer, “Churaya Tune Dil Mera” from Laat Saab and “Chullu Bhar Pani Mein Doob Ja” from Virodhi, all released in 1992 are other early works of their association. But those songs were not popular. It was followed by “Hum Na Honge Juda” and “Jis Jeevan Mein” from Aa Gale Lag Jaa, “Tere Bin Main Kuch Bhi Nahin” from Naaraaz, “Mere Dil Mein” from Yaar Gaddar etc all released in 1994. “Main Khiladi Tu Anari” – The title track (released the same year) was the first successful association of the duo. Anu Malik recorded this song in the voices of Udit, Abhijeet and himself. Yet their association started in full swing only in 1995. Very interesting!

O Mere Sanam” – Title track from Suraksha (1995) was yet another successful association of duo during their early days together. Since 1995 they successfully collaborated for many movies together, delivering hits, and songs of Aamir Khan starrer Baazi is one such. Till then Anu Malik preferably used the voices of Kumar Sanu and Vinod Rathod for majority of his recordings in male voice, though Udit Narayan also remained one of the top male singers of first half of 1990s.

Akele Hum Akele Tum and Ram Jaane released on same day in December 1995 got noticed for some of the songs recorded by Anu Malik in Udit Narayan’s voice. Songs of Akele Hum Akele Tum and Baazi for Aamir Khan became immensely popular in 1995. From there on Anu Malik recorded many songs for Khans in Udit Narayan’s voice. Udit Narayan was one among the playback singers who recorded the title track of Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo – Lengthiest Bollywood song composed by Anu Malik. He also sang a duet version of the song aside Sonu Nigam.

In this list, I have sorted 25 of the best Bollywood songs of Anu Malik – Udit Narayan combination, based on the year of release. Interestingly, except a very few, most of the songs are duets or sung by three or more singers. Hope you will like it.

1. Jaane Mujhe Kya Hua from Baazi (1995) – Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri and Anwar Sagar, Co-Singer: Sadhana Sargam

I shall begin the list with very popular romantic song filmed on Aamir Khan and Mamta Kulkarni. While most composers preferred Kumar Sanu’s voice for Shah Rukh Khan and Udit Narayan’s voice for Aamir Khan in the first half of 1990s, Anu Malik also followed the same suit, and it proved successful. In fact it was their first film together, followed by Akele Hum Akele Tum, both released in 1995, which began their successful collaboration. Thus, a couple of Aamir Khan movies are instrumental in bringing these two talent artists together.

Now coming to this song, as everybody knows, it’s an Indian version of Beethoven’s masterpiece – Fur Elise, which has been used several times on Indian screen. I am a bit doubtful about the original lyricist of this wonderful song, as both Majrooh Sultanpuri and Anwar Sagar have contributed lyrics to this musical album.

2. Dheere Dheere Aap Mere from Baazi (1995) – Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Co-Singer: Sadhana Sargam

The movie included 4 duets of Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam, featuring the lead pair, Aamir Khan and Mamta Kulkarni – Dheere Dheere Aap Mere, Jaane Mujhe Kya Hua, Na Jaane Kya Ho Gaya Hai and Maine Kaha Mohataram. Maine Kaha Mohataram went unnoticed, while the rest three duets became instant hits.

3. Raja Ko Rani Se from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Voices: Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik/Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik

The romantic songs of Akele Hum Akele Tum are still popular even after 25 years, and Anu Malik earned a nomination at Filmfare awards. Yet most of the compositions were either copied or inspired, which brought a black mark to the composer’s career. This particular track was inspired from Slash – Godfather Theme.

udit narayan alka yagnik songs

All its romantic tracks featured the lead pair Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala, but composed in different moods well suiting the film script. It was a complete musical package. This particular song had two romantic duet versions – Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik/Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik, and Udit Narayan-Alka version is most popular. Both earned a Filmfare nomination each, in best playback singer category.

4. Aisa Zakhm Diya Hai from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Solo

This party number sung by Udit Narayan featured Aamir Khan and Manisha Koirala on an eve of New Year celebrations, and is extremely romantic too. This romantic song was quite popular when it got released. This song too was not an original one, and its original version is Sweet Child in Time (1970) composed by Deep Purple.

5. Ho Nahi Sakta from Diljale (1996) – Lyricist: Javed Akhtar, Solo

diljale songs

Ajay Devgan and Sonali Bandre were featured in this romantic number. Definitely it’s the most popular song composed by Anu Malik and sung by Udit Narayan for Ajay Devgan.

6. Dhol Bajne Laga from Virasat (1997) – Lyricist: Javed Akhtar , Co-Singer: Kavita Krishnamurthy

This folk song filmed in the backdrop of rural culture is best known as Kavita Krishnamurthy song. Yet Udit Narayan has also rendered his voice for this song for Anil Kapoor. The song also featured Tabu and newcomer Pooja Bhatra.

7. Na Woh Inkaar from Himalay Putra (1997) – Lyricist: Dev Kohli,  Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

The movie which marked the screen debut of Akshay Khanna and Anjala Zaveri is long forgotten, but not this lovely romantic song. Dev Kohli’s lyrics played wonders for this song, definitely. The movie included yet another popular duet of the duo – Ishq Hua Tujhse Jaanam.

8. Dekho Dekho Jaanam from Ishq (1997) – Lyricist: Rahat Indori,  Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

dekho dekho janam hum

The romantic song featuring real life couple, Ajay Devgan and Kajol was a hit. The film too was a musical hit. The movie also starred the popular star pair of 1990s, Juhi Chawla and Aamir Khan for the last time. Anu Malik has composed music for several movies of Kajol in the 1990s, which include Baazigar, Ishq, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain, Hamesha etc.

9. Neend Churai Meri from Ishq (1997) – Lyricist: Rahat Indori, Co-Singers: Kumar Sanu, Alka Yagnik and Kavita Krishnamurthy

This song is not an original one, but inspired from Sending All My Love by Linera. The song featuring Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgan, Juhi Chawla and Kajol was sung by Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik & Kavita Krishnamurthy. The song also provided comedy relief by a few comic actors.

10. Akela Hai Mr Khiladi from Mr & Mrs. Khiladi (1997) – Lyricist: Dev Kohli, Co-Singer: Anuradha Paudwal

The title track featuring Akshay Kumar and Juhi Chawla got noticed for its foreign locations, and the album also included Udit Narayan’s songs such as Tu Kya Bangala Banaayega and Zara Parde Pe Aane De.

11. Ae Dil Hamen Itna Bata from Hamesha (1997) – Lyricist: Rahat Indori, Co-Singer: Sadhana Sargam

hamesha songs

Sadhana Sargam provided back vocals only, and thus this romantic song can be better identified as Udit Narayan solo. The song was filmed on Aditya Pancholi and Kajol. The movie included many chartbuster hits such as Nazrein, Hamesha, Neel Dupatta etc featuring Kajol and Saif Ali Khan, but was a flop at box office.

12. Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam from Duplicate (1998) – Lyricist: Javed Akhtar , Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

When I heard this song for the first time, I felt it very similar to Shammi Kapoor’s very popular song, Kabhi Hum Ne Nahin Socha Tha. Lyrics penned by Akhtar for the opening lines also look similar It seems the song is inspired from ‘Tumse Acha Kaun Hai’ song. This sizzling dance number was filmed on Shah Rukh Khan, Sonali Bandre and Juhi Chawla.

13. Khatey Hain Kasam from Prem Aggan (1998) – Lyricist: Sudarshan Faakir , Co-Singer: Sadhana Sargam

prem agan songs

Some of the finest songs of Sadhana Sargam’s career were composed by Anu Malik, and Khatey Hain Kasam is one such. She sang this popular duet with Udit Narayan, and the song was filmed on Fardeen Khan and Meghna Kothari, who marked their screen debut with this flop movie.

14. Chhup Gaya from Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

Kumar Sanu & Anuradha Paudwal sang three duets from the film, while this song was recorded in the voices of Udit Narayan & Alka Yagnik. This song was equally popular as the rest ones. All these songs were filmed on Anil Kapoor and Kajol, who were paired for the first and last time for this hit movie.

15. Chandni Aaya Hai Tera Deewana from Jaanam Samjha Karo (1999) – Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri,  Solo

This romantic solo filmed on Salman Khan and Urmila Matondkar was one of the soft tracks of the album. The movie included fast tracks like Jaanam Samjha Karo and sad solos like Sabke Baaratein. Apart from Jaanam Samjha Karo, Anu Malik has composed songs for Salman movies such as Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi etc.

16. Hai Mera Dil from Josh (2000) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-singer: Alka Yagnik

Definitely it’s my most popular Udit Narayan song, composed by Anu Malik. Josh is best known for some of the best songs of Anu Malik’s career, though it’s not free of ‘inspirations’. The romantic duet featuring Chandrachur Singh and Aishwarya Rai has drawn inspirations from Gypsy Kings’ Djobi Djoba and Brian Hyland’s ‘Sealed with a kiss’, yet Anu Malik sealed it in his name through his versatility.

17. Haare Haare from Josh (2000) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

aishwarya songs

This song also featured Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh, but in a sad mood of separation. The song has some inspirations from Vangelis’ ‘Conquest of paradise’.

18. Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega from Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega (2000) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

Sameer frequently worked with Anu Malik throughout 1990s and first half of 2000s, before the composer’s career started to fade. It’s one of the best song written by Sameer for Anu Malik and rendered by Udit Narayan. The title track was filmed on Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan, who became a successful screen pair in the early 2000s.

19. Aaja Mahiya from Fiza (2000)  – Lyricist: Gulzar , Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

hrithik fiza

In year 2000, Anu Malik gave some of his finest tunes of his career, and he also re-invented himself through several unique tunes of Refugee, Fiza, Josh (to some extend), Badal, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega etc. Anu Malik also earned a nomination for its music at Filmfare. It’s exactly the same year, he bagged National film awards for Refugee, definitely the busiest year of his career. The song filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Neha is still very popular. Interestingly Anu Malik composed songs of Neha’s debut movie, Kareeb, though none of its songs were recorded in Udit Narayan’s voice.

20. Raat Ke Hatheli Pe from Refugee (2000)  – Lyricist: Javed Akhtar, Co-singer: Alka Yagnik

The album gave the composer his single National recognition in best music category. The movie included 6 of the finest tracks of Anu Malik ever. The movie marked the screen debuts of both Kareena Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan, and all its songs were filmed on both. While Sonu Nigam’s voice was predominantly used as the ghost voice of Bachchan, Anu Malik reserved one special song for Udit Narayan, and it’s so special, no doubt.

21. Jab Dil Miley from Yaadein (2001) – Lyricist: Anand Bakshi, Co-Singers:  Asha Bhonsle, Sukhwinder Singh

yadein songs

One of the popular songs of year 2001, all the songs composed by Anu Malik were well appreciated. This dance sequence featured Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor, who was a hot pair then. Jab Dil Miley is one of the very duets of Udit Narayan and Asha Bhosle, composed by Anu Malik. He also used Udit’s voice to record ‘Eli Re Eli’ song. But it’s best known for female rendition for a girls’ gang and hence I excluded it from this list.

22. Aye Meri Zindagi from Saaya (2003) – Lyricist: Saeed Quadri, Singers: Udit Narayan/Shreya Ghoshal

The song had solo versions recorded in Shreya Ghoshal and Udit Narayan’s voice, and was filmed on John Abraham and Tara Sharma. It’s the most popular song from the album.

23. Jiya Main Jiya from Khushi (2003) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

The song was filmed on Kareena Kapoor and Fardeen Khan. Though this remake of south Indian flick with the same name was a big flop at box office, songs composed by Anu Malik were well-received.

24. Aaja Ve Mahi from Fida (2004) – Lyricist: Sameer, Co-Singer: Alka Yagnik

As far as I know, it’s the first Bollywood song for which Kareena Kapoor rendered her voice, though not a singer. She recited a few lines. This dance sequence was filmed on Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor, who were dating back then.

25. Agar Tum Mil Jaayo from Zeher (2005)  – Lyricist: Sayeed Quadri,  Voices: Udit Narayan / Shreya Ghoshal

Agar Tum Mil Jaayo is the top romantic song of the album recorded in two solo versions – one in Shreya Ghoshal’s voice and second one in Udit Narayan’s. It can’t be quoted to be an original song, as both its lyrics and tune were copied from a song from 1974 Pakistani Urdu movie, Imandar rendered by Tassawar Khanum. Mukda of the song is a direct lift, both lyrics and tune. Sayeed Quadri re-wrote the Antara of the song, while he didn’t alter the Mukda. The song was filmed on Shamita Shetty and Emraan Hashmi, who played a married couple on screen. Female version was filmed on Emraan, Shamita and Udita Goswami.

zeher songs

After 2005, though Anu Malik owns a few hit films to his credit such as Kambakkht Ishq, Jaan-E-Mann and also Dum Laga Ke Haisha in the recent past, none of them include popular Udit Narayan tracks. I am desperately in wait for that magical era of sweet 1990s and early 2000s, where Anu Malik and Udit Narayan gave us some of the best melodies of the time. Let us hope for the best.
