Pandit Chhannulal Mishra: The Legendary Doyen of Banaras Gharana

Chhannulal Mishra banaras gharana

Chhannulal Mishra was born on 3 August 1936 in Hariharpur, Azamgarh district, United Provinces of Agra and Oudh in British India. Pandit Mishra’s initial musical foundation was laid by his father, Badri Prasad Mishra.

He went on to receive rigorous classical grooming under Ustad Abdul Ghani Khan of the Kirana Gharana, followed by Thakur Jaidev Singh, eminent musicologist and philosopher. This kind of grooming enabled him to bring structural purity and deep spiritual intellect to his singing. Mishra was married to the daughter of Pt Anokhelal Mishra.

The voice of Kashi

While his training spanned multiple schools, his soul belonged to the Banaras Gharana. He was an exponent of Khayal, Dadra, Kajri, Chaiti, and Sawani. His capability to weave bhava (deep emotional expression) into semi-classical forms earned him the informal title of the “King of Thumri.”
