Vahbiz Bharucha – Indian Women’s Rugby Captain who led the country’s first international tournament

Vahbiz Bharucha is a member of Indian Women’s national Rugby team who currently serves as its Captain. She has been playing this game since 2009 and has completed 1 decade, and has also witnessed the growing phase of rugby in India. She has been serving as the captain of Indian national team since 2013, and has more recently led her team in Asia Rugby Women’s Championship 2018, which brought her to limelight. It was India’s first international women’s rugby tournament.

During her school days she initially played wrestling and handball, and switched to rugby just a few months before 10th board exams in 2009. She was spotted by leading woman rugby player Suhrud Khare who suggested her to change the name, and it proved successful. In 2010 she attended a training camp at Pune and her exercises include – running, plank exercises, weight lifting etc. Currently one of the leading female rugby players of the country, she serves as team captain too. For playing her first international tournament she went rigorous training. She took 3-hour daily training and also cycled 40 kms a day.

1. She is a physiotherapist by profession and a vocational rugby player.

2. For her success in sports career, she credits her father who wholly supported her and treated her as gender neutral. She has two elder brothers.

3. Her favourite player is New Zealand’s Richie McCaw.

4. She was the captain of Asia Rugby Women’s Championship 2018, her first international tournament in 15a format.
