B. K. Hariprasad – Senior Congress Politician & Parliamentarian from Karnataka

B. K. Hariprasad is a Congress politician and Rajya Sabha member from Karnataka. Though he stood for Deputy Chairman post of the Rajya Sabha, he was defeated by Harivansh Narayan Singh of Janata Dal (United). He has served as MP of Rajya Sabha for Karnataka four times – 1990-1996, 2004-2010, 2013-2014 (elected), and 2014-present. He also serves as a General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, and has earlier held the charge of Odisha.

B. K. Hariprasad hails from Bangalore, Karnataka and was born in 1954. He is graduated in commerce from MES College, Bangalore. He got active into politics in the early 1990s, when he became a Rajya Sabha member in 1990. He unsuccessfully contested 1999 Lok Sabha electionsfrom Bangalore South, and was defeated by sitting MP Ananth Kumar. He became a parliamentarian for the fourth time in 2014, after being nominated to Rajya Sabha by INC. In 2019 general elections he was defeated by BJP’s Tejasvi Surya by 3, 31, 192 votes.

B. K. Hariprasad – Some interesting and unknown facts

1. When he contested general elections in 1999, he was defeated by BJP’s Ananth Kumar. Interestingly Ananth Kumar got elected from Bangalore South for the first time in 1996, and remained as MP for the same constituency till his death in 2018.

2. Though he is a senior leader, he mostly stayed away from Karnataka politics. He has been mostly involved with AICC activities.

3. He has been defeated from Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency by BJP candidates in 1999 and 2019.  

4. Tejasvi Surya, who defeated him in 2019 general elections became the youngest ever parliamentarian of Bharatiya Janata party.

5. He is known to be a staunch loyalist of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

6. He was elected for 2013-2014 term of Rajya Sabha after Anil Lad of Indian National Congress resigned to take charge as Bellary MLA.
