Amit V. Masurkar – Bollywood filmmaker of ‘Newton’ fame

Amit V. Masurkar is a talented young director of Bollywood, best known for his second film, Newton in 2017 starring Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathy. The film was India’s official entry to Academy Awards, though it couldn’t make it to the final nomination list. He also directed the film, Sulemani Keeda in 2014 which received rave reviews and was first screened at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2013. Amit marked his film debut as a screenwriter of Murder 3 in 2011, and later scripted and directed two critically acclaimed films. Newton impressed critics and audience alike for the choice of an unconventional subject and performances, though there was a controversy related to its selection for Oscars.

Amit V. Masurkar hails from Mumbai. He grew up in a middle class family in Mumbai’s Mahim suburb. His early education was done in his hometown before he moved to MIT to pursue engineering degree. However at the age of 20 he discontinued his studies to pursue a career as a film director. During his college days he got exposed to cinema through illegal video parlours and that’s why he changed his career choice.

1. During his initial days in the entertainment world he worked as the staff writer of the TV show, The Great Indian Comedy Show.

2. He received Asia Pacific Screen Award for Best Screenplay for Newton and many other honours. It has travelled to 40-50 film festivals around the globe.

3. Though he discontinued his engineering studies at Manipal Institute of Technology, he later completed BA from Mumbai University.

4. He has also directed short films, L (2015) and Life After (2016).
