Bollywood is among the highly popular film industries of the world, and it owns many branches and family trees. Perhaps Bollywood owns maximum film families; say Kapoor Family, Mukherjee Family, Ganguly Family etc. In my previous column, I listed 44 pairs of such siblings who earned fame as actors in Bollywood. Read to know sibling actors of Bollywood.
Through this column, I would like to extend that discussion to list actors of Bollywood who worked with siblings. Obviously those siblings will be either brothers or sisters. Have a look.
Kapoor sisters most successful with Khans of Bollywood
Karishma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor – They are the most successful sisters of Bollywood of present generation. If Karishma Kapoor fully dominated Bollywood in the second half of 1990s, since her debut film Kareena managed to make a mark in Bollywood. Obviously almost all heroes of 1990s and later, particularly Khans go opportunity to romance these lovely ladies onscreen.
Aamir Khan was paired with Karishma Kapoor for Raja Hindustani in 1996. Though Karishma was one of the busy stars of 1990s, she got opportunity to work with two Khans (Aamir and Shah Rukh) only once throughout her career. Aamir romanced Kareena Kapoor in 3 Idiots and also worked with her for the supernatural thriller – Talaash: The answer lies within. Aamir’s success rate with Kapoor sisters is 100 percent, though he worked with them in only three movies.
Shah Rukh Khan worked with Karishma Kapoor in Dil To Pagal Hai, the movie regarded as Karishma’s career best. But he worked with her younger sister in a series of movies such as Ashoka, Ra-One, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum etc. He romanced Kareena in Asoka and Ra-One, and both these movies failed at box office. But Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum where Kareena played his sister-in-law was a huge blockbuster.

Salman Khan – Karishma Kapoor jodi was one of the highly demanding pair in the 1990s. Biwi No:1 released during the World Cup time in 1999 is the biggest hit of this jodi up-to-date. They also worked together for Jeet, Haseena Maan Jayege and Judwa which were box office hits. They were paired for the cult classic comedy of 1994 – Andaaz Apna Apna, Nishchaiy, Jaagruti, Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge, Chal Mere Bhai etc. Salman Khan shares a hit-and-miss strategy with the younger sister. Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Bodyguard were huge blockbuster hits. Some of their flops include – Kyon Ki and Mein Aur Mrs. Khanna.

Saif Ali Khan is one among those rarest stars of Bollywood who romanced his real-life heroine as well as sister-in-law on Bollywood screen. He worked with Karishma Kapoor for the movie – Hum Saath-Saath Hain, a huge family blockbuster. Karishma also played a cameo role in the climax scene of Yeh Dillagi. Though he worked with Kareena Kapoor for a series of movies, box office records are not so encouraging. Tashan, Kurbaan, LOC Kargil and Agent Vinod belong to this list. They also worked together for the highly acclaimed Omkara, though not paired opposite.

Akshay Kumar regularly worked with Karishma Kapoor in the 1990s, and with Kareena Kapoor since early 2000s. Akshay romanced Karishma in the movies – Janwar, Sapoot, Haan Meine Bhi Pyar Kiya Hai, Deedar, Maidan-E-Jung, Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love, Mere Jeevan Saathi , Lahu Ke Do Rang etc. Talaash: The Hunt Begins…, Aitraaz, Bewafaa, Kambakkht Ishq, Dosti: Friends Forever, Tashan, Gabbar is Back etc are some of the movies in which Akshay Kumar romanced Kareena Kapoor.
Abhishek Bachchan marked his Bollywood debut with Refugee, which happened to be Kareena Kapoor’s debut movie too. They also shared screen space for Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon. Later Abhishek dated Kareena Kapoor’s elder sister and got engaged also. At that time they worked together for the movie, Haan Meine Bhi Pyar Kiya Hai.
Ajay Devgan’s pairing with Karishma was quite appreciated in the early 1990s. They worked together for the action movie – Jigar in 1992 which was a box office hit. They also worked together for the movies – Sangraam, Shaktiman, Dhanwan, Suhaag etc. He also had a successful box office history with Kareena Kapoor through Golmaal series. They were paired as spouses for the movies – Golmaal returns and Golmaal 3. Omkara is a highly acclaimed movie of this pair, and they also worked together in Satyagraha and Singham Returns.
Anil Kapoor acted as Kareena’s husband in Bewafaa (2004). He earlier worked with Karishma Kapoor for the movies – Andaaz and Rishtaa.
Bobby Deol worked with elder sister for the movie, Aashiq and Hum To Mohabbat Karega, while he romanced the younger sister for the action thriller – Ajnabee. All the movies were released during 2000-2001 period.
Heroines get opportunity to romance Salman Khan and his brothers in a single film
Salman’s brothers – Sohail Khan and Arbaaz Khan frequently work together. Sohail Khan often wears the director’s cap where either Salman and Arbaaz, or both work together in a single film. Obviously film’s heroine gets opportunity to romance the siblings in a single movie.

Rani Mukerji was paired opposite Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan in the movie, Hello Brother, and the movie was directed by Sohail Khan. Kareena Kapoor worked opposite Sohail Khan and Salman Khan for the movie, Mein Aur Mrs. Khanna. Katrina Kaif romanced the brothers Sohail Khan and Salman Khan for the movie, Meine Kyon Pyar Kiya. Ek Tha Tiger and Yuvraj are other movies where Katrina and Salman worked as lead pair.
Rani regularly worked with Salman Khan in the movies – Hello Brother, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Babul, Kahi Pyar Na Ho Jaaye and Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, and she romanced Arbaaz Khan in Hello Brother. Kyon Ki, Mein Aur Mrs. Khanna, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Bodyguard are the movies where Kareena and Salman played lead pair.
Kapoor brothers who romanced a series of Bollywood actresses of yesterdays
The list is so long, as Kapoor family is one of the well-established filmy-families of Bollywood. Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor worked with almost all lead heroines of 1950s and 1960s, and I would like to give a brief note of them.

Hema Malini is one among the rarest heroines who got opportunity to romance with all the three Kapoor brothers. In fact she started her Bollywood career opposite Raj Kapoor through the movie – Sapnon Ka Saudagar, a box office flop. Later she worked with Shammi Kapoor for the movie – Andaaz, the last successful movie of the dancing hero in a lead role. She worked with Shashi Kapoor in Abhinetri – a box office flop, and also Jahan Pyar Mile, Aap Beati, Trishul, Apna Khoon, Naach Uthe Sansaar etc.
Sharmila Tagore was quite successful with Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor in the 1960s. She was paired with Shammi Kapoor for the musical blockbusters – Kashmir Ki Kali and An Evening in Paris. She worked with Shashi Kapoor for the movies – Mere Humsafar, Waqt, Aa Gale Lag Jaa, Aamne Samne etc.
Asha Parekh ruled Bollywood in the 1960s. She romanced Shammi Kapoor in Teesri Manzil, Dil Dekhe Dekho and Pagla Kahin Ka, and his younger brother in Pyar Ka Mausam and Kanya Daan. All these movies met with commercial success and songs too ever instant chartbusters.
Rajshree worked opposite Raj Kapoor in Around The World, and aside his younger brother Shammi Kapoor in Janwar and Brahmachari, and both these movies were huge hits and are still remembered for their evergreen songs composed by Shankar-Jaikishen. She starred opposite Shashi Kapoor in Naina and Dil Ne Pukara. Thus she worked with all the three brothers.
Vyjayanthimala was one of the leading heroines of 1960s. She worked opposite Raj Kapoor in Nazrana and also the love triangle Sangham – a huge blockbuster. She sizzled onscreen with Shammi Kapoor for the movie Prince in 1969, and College Girl in 1960.

Mala Sinha got opportunity to romance with all the three brothers. She worked with Raj Kapoor in the late 1950s for the movies – Phir Subah Hogi, Parvarish and Main Nashe Mein Hoon. Her best appearance with Shammi Kapoor is Dil Tera Deewana, and they also shared screen space for Ujala and Harjayee. She was paired with Shashi Kapoor for a single film, Dharmputra in 1961 directed by Yash Chopra. The movie marked the debut of Shashi Kapoor as an adult actor.
Kalpana Mohan made a magic entry to Bollywood through Professor opposite Shammi Kapoor. She was paired opposite Shashi Kapoor in the comedy film, Pyar Kiya Jaa.
Sadhana Shivdasani – Top heroine of 1960s worked with Shammi Kapoor in Rajkumar, Budtameez and Sachaai and with Shashi Kapoor in Prem Patra. She worked with the elder brother Raj Kapoor in Dulha Dulhan. Thus she shared screen space with all the three brothers.
Madhubala romanced Shammi Kapoor for the movies – Boy Friend, Rail Ka Dibba and Naqab. Shammi Kapoor fell in love with her during the shooting of Rail Ka Dibba and wanted to marry her then. At that time Madhu was romantically involved with Dilip Kumar. She worked with Raj Kapoor for the movies – Neel Kamal (1947), Dil Ki Rani, Do Ustaad and Chittor Vijay.
Babita romanced with Shammi Kapoor onscreen for the movie, Tum Se Achcha Kaun Hai, and with Shashi Kapoor for Ek Sreeman Ek Sreemati and Haseena Maan Jayegi. Later she got married to Raj Kapoor’s son, Randhir Kapoor.
Padmini worked with elder brother in several movies as his lead lady and was successful. Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai is the most successful film of this duo. They also worked together in Aashiq and Mera Naam Joker. She also worked with Shammi Kapoor in Singapore in 1960.
Nanda worked with Raj Kapoor in Aashiq in 1962. Her pairing with Shashi Kapoor is quite successful. Jab Jab Phool Khile was a huge blockbuster. Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain, Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath, Roota Na Karo, Raja Saab and Neend Hamari Kwab Tumhari are other works.
Saira Banu marked her acting debut opposite Shammi Kapoor in 1961 with Junglee. They also worked as romantic pair in the movie – Bluff Master. Years later she played Shammi Kapoor’s daughter in Zameer. She played female lead of Raj Kapoor in Diwana. She was paired with Shashi Kapoor in one movie – Ban Gayi Baat Baato Me in 1976.

Meena Kumari was paired with Raj Kapoor in Char Dil Char Rahen and Sharada. She worked with Shammi Kapoor in the comedy flick Mem Sahib.
Nutan worked with Raj Kapoor in many classic hits of 1960s such as Anari, Chaliya, Dil Hi To Hai and Kanhaya. She worked with his younger brother Shammi Kapoor for Laat Saheb, Laila Majnu and Basant.

Shakila worked with Raj Kapoor for the movies – Dastaan and Shriman Satyawadi. Her pairing with Shammi Kapoor for China Town is indeed popular.
Mumtaz moved to A-grade heroine list after acting in B-grade action movies. Her single appearance with Shammi Kapoor is for the movie, Brahmachari and the song ‘Aaj Kal’ pictured on both is still popular. She owns a good career history with Shashi Kapoor. Chor Machaya Shor is the biggest hit of this duo. The love triangle – Prem Kahani was also a major hit.
Madhubala opposite Ganguly Brothers
Madhubala was paired Ashok Kumar for Howrah Bridge, and she worked with him in Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi. This time she was paired with Kishore Kumar. Thus she belongs to the rare list of heroines who romanced both her real-life husband and brother-in-law on Bollywood screen.
Actors who romanced the sisters – Tanuja and Nutan onscreen
Nutan and Tanuja are versatile actresses who own a glorious period in the 1960s. They worked with almost all leading heroes of 1950s to early 1970s.
Dharmendra – Among all actors of 1960s, Dharmendra is most successful pairing with siblings. He worked with Nutan in the movies – Bandini, Dulhan Ek Raat Ki, Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya and Soorat Aur Seerat. He was paired with Tanuja for the movies – Baharein Phir Bhi Aayegi, Chand Aur Suraj, Do Chor and Izzat.
Dev Anand – His pairing with Nutan is equally successful. They worked in several classic hits such as Tere Ghar Ke Samne and Paying Guest. Manzil and Baarish are other movies. Dev Anand worked with Tanuja in Jewel Thief.
Actresses of old era who romanced brothers, except Kapoor brothers
Hema Malini was paired with Feroz Khan for the movie, Sharafat Chod Di Maine and Sanjay Khan for Babul Ki Galiyaan. Asha Parekh romanced Dev Anand in Mahal and Jab Kise Se Pyar Hota Hai, and played the role of Vijay Anand’s mistress in Mein Tulsi Tere Angan Ki.
Ameesha – Most successful opposite Deol Brothers
Many leading heroines of 1990s got opportunity to romance Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol onscreen. Shilpa Shetty and Karishma Kapoor are among those leading names. Shilpa Shetty romanced Sunny Deol in Apne, where she shared screen space with younger brother too. She earlier worked with the big brother for the movies – Himmat, Indian and Karz: The Burden of Truth. She was paired with Bobby Deol for the movie, Chor Machaya Shor, a flop. Karishma Kapoor romanced elder brother in Jeet and Ajay, and younger brother in Aashiq and Hum To Mohabbat Karega. Jeet was a box office hit, and the rest were flops.
Among all heroines, only Urmila got opportunity to share screen space with the siblings for a single film – Dillagi in 1999. The movie was directed by Sunny Deol. Priyanka Chopra shared screen space with Sunny Deol for the movies – The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (her debut film) and Big Brother. She was paired with Bobby Deol for Barsaat, Kismat, Chamku and the most successful – Dostana. Preity Zinta worked with Sunny Deol in Farz, Heroes and The Hero: Love Story of a Spy. However she is best known for her work in action thriller, Soldier where she romanced Bobby Deol. She also shared screen space with Bobby for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.
Ameesha’s career best works are Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Humraaz, where she was paired with Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol respectively. Her acting was well appreciated in both these movies. Though her debut film – Kaho Na Pyar Hai was a huge blockbuster, full credits went to Hrithik Roshan. She later worked with Bobby Deol in Kranti and Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai. Kangana Ranaut worked with Sunny Deol in the delayed release, I Love New Year and with Bobby in Vaada Raha.

Anil Kapoor and his sibling heroines
As told above, Anil Kapoor worked with Karishma Kapoor in Andaaz and Rishtaa, and with Kareena Kapoor in Bewafa. He worked with Shilpa Shirodkar in Kishen Kanhaiya and Namrata Shirodkar in Pukar. He romanced Sushma Reddy in Chocolate, and her younger sister Sameera Reddy in Musafir and Race.
Now a brief note on the heroines who worked opposite Anil and his younger brother. Tabu marked her acting debut with 1995 romantic movie – Prem, where she was paired with Sanjay Kapoor. Tabu played Anil Kapoor’s wife in Biwi No: 1. Madhuri Dixit’s screen pairing with Anil Kapoor was well appreciated since late 1980s, and many of their films were huge hits at box office. They worked together for the movies – Parinda, Beta, Khel, Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Jeevan Ek Sangursh, Hifazat, Kishen Kanhaiya, Jamai Raja, Prathikaar, Zindagi Ek Jua, Rajkumar, Pukar etc. Madhuri romanced Sanjay Kapoor for his second film, Raja, a box office hit.
Shilpa Shetty romanced Anil Kapoor in Rishtey and Badai Ho Badai, and Sanjay Kapoor in Auzaar. Sonali Bandre romanced Anil Kapoor in Humare Dil Aapke Paas Hai and worked with Sanjay Kapoor in a cameo role of a doctor in Kal Ho Na Ho.
A few actors in the new generation since 1990s
Shetty Sisters – Manoj Bajpayee shared screen space with real life sisters Shilpa Shetty and Shamita Shetty in the movie – Fareb. Shamita also worked with Manoj Bajpayee in Bewafaa, starring Anil Kapoor, Karishma Kapoor and Akshay Kumar. Sanjay Dutt worked with Shilpa Shetty in Dus, Jung and Hathyaar, and aside Shamita in Mohabbat Ho Gayi Hai Tumse.
Khanna Sisters – Govinda worked with Twinkle Khanna in Joru Ka Ghulam and Jodi No: 1. He worked with Rinkie Khanna in Jis Des Mein Ganga Rehta Hai.
