10+ Varieties of Dupattas that you will definitely fall in love with

Chunari, Chunariya, or Audhani – Dupatta is known in different names in different places, yet a part of India’s traditional costume. In the recent times Dupatta has received a decent makeover – from casual look to style statement piece. Trends of Churidars and casual wears often change. Yet Dupatta is here to stay forever, though it has gone through a few makeovers. The biggest advantage of a good dupatta is that even if your churidar top is not bright or attractive, choice of a good dupatta can change the full topic. A dupatta in Kanchipuram or Banaras silk can give you an elegant look in parties.

You can choose lehenga, salwar kameez or ankle length Anarkali dress, silk dupatta with vintage look is always trendy. For formal or casual, you have a lot of choices nowadays. Here are a few.

1. Tie and Dye Dupatta

Earlier only Chungidi dupattas were available in ‘tie & dye’ type, which gives round shaped beautiful designs. But now different variations in designs are available such as Shibori, Bandini, Clamp Dye, Lehariya and Ikkat – the list is too long.

2. Velvet Dupatta

Different types of prints are available in solid colours in Velvet market. One of them is the bright Velvet Dupatta. Golden heat transfer print for dark solid colours and Multi colour prints in big Motifs – such combinations are available in Velvet. Pom Pom fixed in the borders along with pearls and sequences in light weighted dupattas are also available.

3. Border Out, Detailing In

Lace borders for dupattas are now trendy. Fringe, pleats, pom pom, gathers, tassel – here it goes the decorations to make dupattas beautiful and attractive. For the same reason border dupattas are not so popular nowadays.

4. Hand-painted Dupatta

Traditional pictures which include Floral paints, Kalamkari, Madhubani, Warli and Mural are always classic and loved by all, and hence its trend never fades. So you can buy them at any season without any confusion.

5. Embroidery Dupatta

You can design evergreen embroidery trend in classic or contemporary style in your dupatta. Beauty of floral motifs never fades. Aari work, bead work and French knot have trendy designs always. To change a simple dupatta to classy or elegant embroidery work is the best option.

6. Dabu Print Dupatta

They are beautiful and simple dupattas with motifs and colours. They well suit with fabrics such as cotton, chanderi and tussar. Dabu Prints are born from clay dyeing known by the names Indigo or Kalesh. It is known for the signature style of patterns without perfection, which adds extra beauty to dupattas. As traditional printing method is used, colours may fade or go from the cloth, which makes its biggest disadvantage.

7. Patch Dupatta  

They are entirely different from other dupatta types, where different fabrics are stitched together to get a dupatta. Patches may be of same size or different. Its beauty secret lies in the perfection of stitching and combination of colours. You can add tough look to your dupatta by using jeans cloth.

8. Sari Pallu Dupatta

They are trendy among party wear dupattas. They have more length and width than normal dupattas, and either ends resemble Pallu of beautiful silk saris.

9. Two-side Dupatta

They are smart dupattas and can be used by either side. They are usually with two different colours on either side and with designs. Kantha Embroidery Dupattas are available in this type, and such dupattas are hot favourites for working women.

10. Banarasi Silk Dupatta

Simple silk dupattas with Banarasi print or with intricate designs – both are hits. Those dupattas with thick designs can be used as party wears. As they are heavy, they suit best with simple dresses. Banarasi dupattas are mostly available in bright colours. Now they are also used with dresses of contrast colours. They are best combos for kurtas or kameez. Simple pastel colour Banarasi dupattas can be used for office outfits.

11. Pasmina Dupatta

Dupattas with Kashmiri Art work is high in demand always. It’s a tedious process behind such dupattas and it may require more than a month to make a single piece. They are light weighted dupattas like feathers and suit every season.

12. Ikkat Dupatta

Bold and sophisticated look – that’s what Ikkat dupatta promises you. Ivory colour is mostly chosen as base colour, yet they own colourful border prints which add beauty. Terracotta accessories, handmade bags and tribal accessories – they got well with Ikkat dupattas.

13. Double Dupatta

It’s the trendy dupatta belonging to bridal wear. One dupatta piece is used to cover the chest portion. Second dupatta can be used to cover head or used on right shoulder. It is expensive comparing other dupattas, yet it gives a royal look to weddings and marriage receptions.
