The word “wardrobe” comes from the Old French term “warderobe” (or “garderobe”). “Garder” means “to guard” or “to keep” and “Robe” means “clothing” or “garment”. Till a time back, wardrobe was used to store dresses only. But now it can be used as a broad term, where a few more items can be kept inside the wardrobe, not only dress. How can you arrange a wardrobe in a better way? Here I provide a few tips.

A few things to remember while making/choosing a wardrobe

1. A good wardrobe should give a better storage space. Also, it should take up less space and use the available space effectively. If you are a disciplined person, you will just love to arrange everything perfectly in your wardrobe.

2. ‘Walk-in wardrobe’ is the latest trend. You can walk into the almarah and take dresses of your choice from the 2 or 3 wardrobe shelves. These shelves will be arranged separately.

3. You can weekly iron your dresses and keep it in a separate shelf, if you are a planning person. You may need to provide more hanger options inside the shelf in this case.

4. All shelves should be of different sizes. For example, we may need a long length shelf to hang kurtas while comparatively short spaces for shirts and sarees. You can keep separate shelves where you can fold dresses and keep.

5. The height of the person who uses the wardrobe is also important. He should be able to take dresses from the shelves without much effort, especially those which he needs on a daily basis.

6. For an office-going girl, she can fold and keep a churidar set within a single shelf, which includes the top, bottom and shawl together. If you love matching different kurta tops with different pants, you can keep all kurtas together, pants in another shelf and shawls in another.

7. Wardrobes which touch ceiling is the best. It gives extra storage space and takes up less space on the floor. Cabinets, shelves and drawers can be designed as per your convenience. You can arrange less used items in the top shelves. You can add drawers to place different things. It helps in better arrangement of your items so that it takes less time to search and find. When your wardrobe touches ceilings, it avoids dust on the upper part of the wardrobe, thus saving your cleaning time too.

8. You can also try a floating wardrobe design. This wardrobe doesn’t touch the floor. The advantage is that if the floor is moist, the wardrobe won’t be damaged. To some extent, you can also avoid pests.

9. If your room is not spacious, you can give a sliding door for your wardrobe. If you fix a big glass in the shutter, then the room appears bigger and more spacious.

10. Dresses which you use on a regular basis should be placed in the middle portion. Central drawers can be used for this purpose.

11. Use small drawers for storing innerwear, clips, hair bands etc.

12. You can also provide hangers in a long shelf where you can hang dresses which you have used once and can be used for another day. Just beneath that shelf, you can arrange your drawer for used dresses which need a wash. You can provide a louvre for the shutter here. You can also place a laundry basket inside.
