Today is the 90th birth anniversary of our beloved star – Dharmendra, who left us towards last month end. If Dharmendra were alive today, he would have celebrated his 90th birthday with fans and dear ones. After that fake news, I got emotionally invested in knowing his health updates, and when he left the hospital, I really believed Dharam Paaji would celebrate his 90th birthday. But destiny was something else.

From 2016 to mid-2020 June, I added so many music lists featuring artists from Bollywood – Actors, composers, lyricists and playback singers. But due to some personal reasons, I stopped listing songs, even stopped adding articles about Bollywood for a long time. From that mindset, if I have changed and decided to present something for Dharmendra, which I haven’t done in the past 5 years, then it’s only because of true admiration for the legend! Happy Birthday in Heaven, Dharam Ji. When I prepare this playlist, one more big name I miss right now is Lata Ji.

It’s not an easy task to filter his career-best 10 or 20 songs. So, I have listed 30 of Dharmendra’s songs, which I felt the best. Maybe your choices and my choices are different. But our love and admiration for the star remain the same, no doubt!

I have sorted songs based on year of release. Along with this, I have added two more lists, based on popularity and one extra list of Dharmendra’s super hit songs, which were not sung on screen by him, yet remain as his songs.

Dharmendra – Top 30 Bollywood Songs

Top Dharmendra Songs of 1960s

1. Mujhko Is Raat Ki Tanhai Mein – Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere (1960)

Mujhko Is Raat Ki Tanhai Mein

Dharmendra entered films after participating in the Filmfare Magazine’s ‘New Talent Hunt’ contest in 1958. He was one of the finalists. Impressed by his looks and personality, he was offered the first film, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere by Arjun Hingorani. It was a simple portrayal of a parallel lead role. People might have forgotten this film, but not this soulful sad song sung by Mukesh. Who predicted then, cameras will worship this Punjabi version of Greek god in the coming years! For the next nearly 25 years, this handsome hunk remained cameras’ first love!

Whenever a playlist of Dharmenda’s hit songs is played, Mujhko Is Raat Ki Tanhai Mein can never miss it. He was credited as Dharmender in the film, co-starring legendary actor Balraj Sahni, Kumkum and Usha Kiran. The song was penned by Shamim Jaipuri and composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

2. Yahi Hai Tamanna – Aap Ki Parchhaiyan (1964)

Many times, I feel like this song is similar to Tere Ghar Ke Samne or Sagar Kinare or some other Bollywood tune, I can’t find which one. During his early phase in Bollywood, before he turned a star, Dharmendra worked with less-known co-stars. Supriya Choudhury played lead role in this film, and was featured in this song. This is one of the timeless classics of Madan Mohan – Raja Mehdi Ali Khan combo. It’s a fun-mode song sung by Mohammed Rafi.

3. Main Nigahein Tere Chehre Se – Aap Ki Parchhaiyan (1964)

Madan Mohan recorded three solo tracks in Rafi’s voice and Main Nigahein Tere Chehre Se is that particular soft romantic track. This song was also filmed on Dharmendra and Supriya Choudhury, and the lyrics were penned by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. The movie had a sad solo sung by Lata Mangeshkar and filmed on the lead pair, “Agar Mujh Se Mohabbat Hai“.

4. Humsafar Mere Humsafar – Purnima (1965)

humsafar mere humsafar1

Humsafar Mere Humsafar – Top song featuring Dharmendra and Meena Kumari

While Dharmendra didn’t establish as an actor, one among the first A-grade actresses to work with him was Meena Kumari, and Purnima was their first movie together. Dharmendra was a newbie trying to establish himself as a mainstream working actor. There were rumours of their affair when Meena Kumari took an interest in casting him in her movies, while she was shining at her career peak.

They later worked together in Kaajal the same year, followed by Phool Aur Patthar, Manjhli Didi, Chandan Ka Palna, Main Bhi Ladki Hoon and Baharon Ki Manzil. Phool Aur Patthar (1966) became a milestone movie in Dharmendra’s career and he never turned back. He went on to establish as a huge star! They worked together in 7 films, within a span of 4 years.

The soundtrack album of Purnima consists of 8 songs composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, with lyrics provided by different writers. Among all songs, this duet sung by Mukesh and Lata Ji stands out, and is my personal favourite too. Gulzar penned this song. During Dharmendra’s early years, Mukesh sang many of his songs, including his first song, and later Rafi and Kishore became his ghost voices.

5. Tere Paas Aa Ke Mera Waqt – Neela Aakash (1965)

Dharmendra’s pairing with Mala Sinha was quite successful in the 1960s. Their spy thriller, Aankhen released in 1968 was a super-duper hit with some memorable songs. They worked together for the first time in Anpadh (1962), where Dharmendra played the brief role of Mala Sinha’s husband. The ionic song of Lata Ji – Aap Ki Nazron Ne was filmed on this pair.

Later they worked together in Pooja Ke Phool (1964), Neela Aakash (1965), Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966), and Ankhen (1968). Madan Mohan composed the songs and as usual, Raja Mehdi Ali Khan penned lyrics. Tere Paas Aa Ke Mera Waqt  Guzar Jaata Hai is a popular duet sung by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi. Their duet, “Aap Ko Pyaar Chhupane Ki Buri Aadat Hai” was also extremely popular.

Unlike Madan Mohan’s normal works, he used Asha Bhosle to record most of the songs of Neela Aakash. The only song recorded in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was “Na Aasman Na Sitare Fareb Dete Hai”. Neela, the character portrayed by Mala Sinha played an air hostess in the film, and Aakash, the character portrayed by Dharmendra played a pilot.

6. Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniyawalo – Anupama (1966)

Sharmila Tagore marked her Bollywood debut with Anupama, and Dharmendra is her first co-star. Later they worked together in several memorable films like Devar – the same year, Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968), Satyakam (1969), Yakeen (1969), Chhoti Bahu (1971), Chupke Chupke (1975), and Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka (1975). In terms of performance, Satyakam is regarded as the career-best performance of Dharam Ji.

Anupama’s songs were composed by Hemant Kumar and the lyrics were penned by Kaifi Azmi. “Ya Dil Ki Suno Duniyawalo” was composed in Pilu raga and sung by the composer himself. The movie also included Lata Mangeshkar’s soulful track, “Kuchh Dil Ne Kaha“, which is one of her favourites too. Read my list of 500+ Lata Mangeshkar songs here.

7. Mere Dushman – Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966)

mere dushman

Before the hit jodi of Dharmendra and Hema Malini, someone with whom Dharmendra had maximum hit films and songs was none other than Asha Parekh. Also read: Her Top Songs. Dharmendra-Asha Parekh was a top pair of second half of 1960s and early 1970s, who delivered several super hit films together. Aaye Din Bahar Ke was their first film together, followed by Aaya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Shikar, Mera Gaon Mera Desh and Samadhi.

Aaye Din Bahar Ke was a superhit romantic film, and the music composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal hit the top musical charts. All the songs got noticed. Lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. Mere Dushman was a sad solo song filmed towards the film climax, where Dharmendra appears as a performer of the party. Misunderstanding appears as the backdrop of the film, and Nazima also appears in this party song. Song was sung by none other than Rafi.

8. Yeh Kali Jab Talak Phool Banke Khile – Aaye Din Bahar Ke (1966)

This is the single romantic duet of the album, featuring the lead pair, Dharmendra and Asha Parekh. This song also belongs to Laxmikant Pyarelal – Anand Bakshi duo. The movie included a duet of Mangeshkar sisters – “Aaye Kaash Kisi Deewane Ko“, filmed on Asha and Nazima. It’s one among those rare hit songs sung by Mahendra Kapoor for Dharam Ji. Lata Mangeshkar lip-synced for Parekh,

The movie also included the popular dance number pictured on Asha – “Khat Likh De Sawariya Ke Naam” and the lead pair appears extremely stunning in the song – “Suno Sajna Papihe Ne”.

9. Rahen Na Rahen Hum – Mamta (1966)

In true sense, this song belongs to Suchitra Sen and Ashok Kumar only. But one happy version was filmed on Dharmendra and Suchitra Sen. Rahen Na Rahen Hum had two versions – Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi – Suman Kalyanpur, duet version. In fact, the song is mostly known in Suman Kalyanpur’s name. The song was composed by Roshan and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

10. Aap Ki Haseen Rukh – Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1966)

baharein phir phi aayegi

This iconic song sung by Mohammed Rafi always finds a space in Dharmendra’s evergreen hits. It’s a love triangle film, and this particular song featured all the three actors – Dharmendra, Mala Sinha and Tanuja. Dharmendra is seen singing and playing the piano, and both the sisters believe that lines from his song are sung exclusively for them. Music was composed by O. P. Nayyar and the lyrics were penned by Anjaan. The movie’s title track sung by Mahendra Kapoor was also a hit.

11. Ek Haseen Sham Ko Dil Mera Kho Gaya – Dulhan Ek Raat Ki (1967)

The music was composed by Madan Mohan, with lyrics by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan. This beautiful solo sung by Rafi was filmed on the lead pair – Nutan and Dharmendra, who worked in a few movies together in the 1960s. They also worked together in Bandini and Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya.

12. Dhoondhe Tujhko Nain Deewaane – Jab Yaad Kisi Ki Aati Hai (1967)

This song appears at the beginning of the film, where Dharmendra is singing in a train for his distance love, Mala Sinha. In this Dharmendra starrer too, Madan Mohan and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan worked together as a team. This song was recorded in the voice of Mahendra Kapoor. The movie had one more memorable song recorded in Mahendra Kapoor’s voice, Ari O Shokh Kaliyon Muskara Dena.

13. Yeh Dil Tum Bin Kahin Lagta Nahin – Izzat (1968)

The movie was a flop, yet remembered for actor-politician Jayalalithaa’s first and only Hindi film in a full-fledged role. Read more to know. Dharmendra played a dual role in the film, and obviously paired opposite two actresses – Tanuja and Jayalalithaa. Yeh Dil Tum Bin Kahin Lagta Nahin is an extremely popular song, filmed on Dharmendra an Tanuja. Laxmikant–Pyarelal composed the song, and Sahir Ludhianvi penned the lyrics.

14. Na Jaa Kahin Ab – Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968)

rafi hits

The movie is always remembered for the screen chemistry between Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore and the evergreen music composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal. The composer duo frequently worked in Dharmendra starrers, followed by Madan Mohan during his early days, and R. D. Burman in the 1970s. Na Jaa was the most popular song of the album, probably one of the best songs sung by Mohammed Rafi. Lyrics are penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore appeared on screen, though it’s a Rafi solo.

15. Chhalka Yeh Jaam – Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968)

Despite being a romantic film, it had only Rafi and Lata solos, and most of the tracks, romantic in nature became huge chartbusters. Dharmendra appears in an intoxicated mood while singing (in Rafi’s voice) this song, and he is seen teasing Sharmila Tagore. Laxmikant–Pyarelal & Majrooh Sultanpuri are other names associated with this song.

16. Hui Sham Unka Khayal Aa Gaya – Mere Humdum Mere Dost (1968)

Dharmendra is once again seen in an intoxicated mood at night, but this time, this mood is silent and sad. He is seen remembering his beloved Sharmila Tagore. Lyrics penned by Majrooh Saab stands out, so is the soulful music by LP. Mohammed Rafi rendered his voice.

17. Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke – Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969)

It was yet another memorable album of Laxmikant–Pyarelal for Dharmendra, and the title track featured Asha Parekh alongside him. LP’s previous outing with Dharmendra & Asha Parekh was Aaye Din Bahar Ke, which became extremely successful. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics. This duet was sung by Lata and Rafi.

18. Saathiya Nahi Jaana – Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke (1969)

asha parekh dharmendra songs

The movie had only 2 duets, both sung by Lata and Rafi, and Saathiya Nahi Jaana is the second one. Dharmendra & Asha Parekh appeared on screen. Anand Bakshi wrote the lyrics. Movie was a box office hit too.

19. Dekha Hai Teri Aankhon Mein – Pyar Hi Pyar (1969)

Shankar Jaikishan had fewer combination hit songs for Dharmendra, while comparing the discography with Laxmikant–Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji and R. D. Burman. Yet most of the songs stand out. Pyar Hi Pyar is the best instance. Dharmendra is seen in a romantic mood aside Vyjayanthimala in two solos sung by Rafi – Dekha Hai Teri Aankhon Mein and Main Kahin Kavi Na Ban Jaoon. Hasrat Jaipuri penned the lyrics.

S.J had a successful musical partnership with Dharmendra, composing for around 11 films over 14 years. Shikar (1968), Yakeen (1969), and Tum Haseen Main Jawan (1970) were among the hits.

20. Gar Tum Bhula – Yakeen (1969)

This song is close to my heart. The song had two solo versions in Mohd. Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar voice. Rafi’s version stands out (personal opinion). The song was filmed on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore. Yakeen was a spy thriller, where Dharmendra played both hero and villain. Also read: Dual Roles in Bollywood. Dharmendra used two different voices for his dual characters, which is very rare in Indian cinema. As told earlier, Yakeen was Dharmendra’s second successful association with Shankar Jaikishan same year. Hasrat Jaipuri penned lyrics. Read his biography and best song compilation here.

Top Dharmendra Songs of the 1970s

21. Aapko Pehle Bhi Kahin Dekha Hai – Tum Haseen Main Jawaan (1970)

rafi hits

Shankar Jaikishen composed a series of hit songs for Dharmendra in the late 1960s, and songs of Tum Haseen Main Jawaan too were instant chartbusters. Tum Haseen Main Jawaan was the first movie of Dharmendra and Hema Malini together, who just had her Bollywood debut. What we witnessed throughout 1970s and early 1980s was the bombarding of their films together. This dance sequence was also filmed on them. The duet was sung by Rafi and Asha Bhosle, and lyrics penned by Hasrat Jaipuri.

22. Dil Kahe Ruk Ja Re – Man Ki Aankhen (1970)

Waheeda Rehman was paired with him in this movie. They earlier worked together in movies like Baazi. Laxmikant Pyarelal composed this solo, and Sahir Ludhianvi penned lyrics. Dharmendra is seen enjoying nature in this song. Rafi gave his voice. The movie included a melodious solo of Lata Ji filmed on the lead pair – Chala Bhi Aa Aaja Rasiya.

23. Kuch Kehta Hai Yeh Sawan – Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971)

Mera Gaon Mera Desh is the predecessor and Sholay was released 4 years, and their adapted scripts had same storyline and same hero – Dharmendra. Read the interesting factors here. The song featured the romantic pair – Dharmendra and Asha Parekh, in rural based costumes. Laxmikant–Pyarelal composed the song and Anand Bakshi wrote the song. The movie included many iconic solo songs like Maar Diya Jaaye, Sona Lai Ja Re and Apni Prem Kahaniyaan, all recorded in Lata Ji’s voice. The movie had 5 tracks – 4 solos of Lata Mangeshkar and her duet with Mohammed Rafi – Kuch Kehta Hai Yeh Sawan.

24. Chahe Raho Door, Chahe Raho Paas – Do Chor (1972)

Tanuja has worked with him since his early days. They have worked together in Chand Aur Suraj, Baharein Phir Bhi Aayegi, and Izzat. In this particular fun-filled song, the duo is seen teasing each other on a deck. R. D. Burman composed the music and Majrooh Sultanpuri penned lyrics. Also read: Biography of R. D. Burman.

25. Aaj Mausam Bada Be-Imaan – Loafer (1973)

loafer songs

After Aaradhana wave hit the nation, it affected the careers of almost all romantic heroes in the early 1970s, along with the leading male voice – Mohammed Rafi. It literally ended the supremacy of Rafi over two decades, and his down phase started. But this single romantic track brought Rafi’s career back to tracks. Needless to say, the success of Loafer boosted Dharmendra’s career too, and he reigned for over a decade in the coming years.

It’s safe to say, only the careers of Dev Anand, Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor survived in the super stardom of the leading superstars – Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. When these three actors safely adapted chances and were willing to step out of their comfort zone and take challenging roles, the time blessed them.

When it comes to the success of Loafer, the screen jodi of Dharmendra and Mumtaz, mesmerizing music by Laxmikant–Pyarelal and the solo romantic tracks sung by Mohammed Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar respectively, all deserve special mention. Both these solo tracks – Aaj Mausam Bada Be-Imaan and Main Tere Ishq Mein were filmed on the lead pair. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics. Same year, Dharmendra and Mumtaz worked together in Jheel Ke Uss Paar, which included a few good songs (I couldn’t add in the main list). Mumtaz had played supporting role in many of Dharmendra’s films, when she was not a huge star.

26. Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas – Blackmail (1973)

Dharmendra

Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas – The most popular romantic song composed by Kalyanji-Anandji duo

This romantic track composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, probably ranks first in Dharmendra’s song list. Every music lover loves this Kishore Kumar solo track, filmed on Dharmendra and Rakhee Gulzar. Rajendra Krishan wrote this song. Kalyanji-Anandji shares a success record with Dharmendra. Right from the actor’s debut film – Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, the duo composed music for his films – Purnima, Patthar Aur Payal, Baazi, Rakhwala, Professor Pyarelal, Rakhwale and Kahani Kismat Ki.

27. Yeh Dosti – Sholay (1975)

Our list is incomplete without songs of Sholay. Movie buffs can never hate this film or ignore the screen chemistry between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra. Mostly when the screen chemistry of lead hero and heroine are most talked about, Sholay became an extremely exceptional case. The friendship story of Jai & Veeru and the heartbreaking climax became the talk of the town.

Needless to say, Sholay – an ode to friendship, became a milestone in the acting careers of both ‘Jai’ & ‘Veeru’. Movie included some chartbuster songs composed by R. D. Burman and penned by Anand Bakshi. Kishore Kumar and Manna Dey gave their voices for this friendship song for Dharmendra and Bachchan respectively.

28. Dekha Hai Zindagi Ko – Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka (1975)

This sad solo was recorded in Kishore Kumar’s voice. Dharmendra is seen performing in this song, while Ashok Kumar and Sharmila Tagore, sitting among spectators. This is the single song composed by Ravi, which entered my list. The lyrics of this song were penned by Sahir Ludhianvi.

29. Dream Girl -Dream Girl (1977)

This is yet another iconic song of Dharmendra, featuring his dream girl Hema Malini. Music was composed by R. D. Burman and lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi. Anand Bakshi penned the lyrics.

30. Hum Bewafa Har Kis Na The – Shalimar (1978)

Hum Bewafa Harghiz Na from Shalimar

Though the movie was a flop, the soundtrack of Shalimar was featured in the book, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. This sad solo sung by Kishore really stands out. Both R. D. Burman and Kishore Kumar received nominations at Filmfare awards, though they couldn’t win.

A special song – Always close to my heart

Tum Pukarlo from Khamoshi (1969)

I am a little confused whether I should add this song or not. I couldn’t include it in other categories either. Dharmendra plays a cameo role of a patient in this film, without showing his face. This song belongs to Waheeda Rehman. Yet you get glimpses of the actor from back, singing. This song has a male voice, and definitely belongs to him. Like Khamoshi, Hemant Kumar has earlier composed and sang for Dharmendra starrer ‘Anupama’ three years back. Gulzar Saab penned this soulful melody for Khamoshi.

My list of Top 30 Dharmendra songs – ends here, as I can’t find any of his songs from 1980s or later which can replace those one which I selected here. I have added a few more lists of his top songs. Please scroll down.

30 Popular Songs Featuring Dharmendra (Not Lip-Synced by Him)

Dharmendra was a part of these hit songs, sharing screen space with his co-stars (mostly female co-stars). But his character never lip-syncs to these super hit songs. Despite this, many of these songs belong to Dharmendra too; known through his name. For instance – Aap ki Nazron Ne Samjha, Main Tere Ishq Mein and the climax song of Yaadon Ki Baarat – we can’t discuss these songs without taking Dharmendra’s name.

Here is the list of 25 such songs, most of them sung by female voices – Lata Mageshkar and Asha Bhosle. Our discussion will be incomplete if we don’t add these evergreen classics to Dharmendra Hits.

Note: In these songs, Dharmendra appears on screen but does not lip-sync the track himself.
