Vinod Khanna passes away today leaving behind a legacy and it’s my humble tribute to one of the biggest stars of Bollywood in the 1970s. Quite active in the era of 1970s and early 1980s, he gave shapes to numerous characters on screen, and many include some popular songs as well. Majority of hit songs were sung by Kishore Kumar and a few by Rafi, Kumar Sanu, Suresh Wadkar and a few more. Through this list, I would like to present 12 of his best Bollywood songs. Music was composed by Nitin Mangesh and lyrics written by Maya Govind. The Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum phrase became so popular that it was later reused for a few Bollywood songs and also the movie one blockbuster hit starring Shah Rukh Khan. Songs too were penned by Gulzar, and Salil Choudhary composed music for the film.

5. Aaj Phir Tumpe Pyaar Aaya Hai Definitely one of the bold songs pictured in the 1980s, when kissing onscreen was still taboo to Bollywood. Bollywood witnessed one of the hot smooches through this romantic song, belonging to the movie Dayavan. Madhuri Dixit was only a newcomer then, and years later she was paired with Vinod Khanna’s son Akshaye Khanna for another Bollywood film, Mohabbat. Music of Dayavan was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyrics penned by Aziz Qaisi. Chahe Meri Jaan Tu Le Le is yet another popular song belonging to the movie.

6. Dil To Hai Dil – The movie Muqaddar Ka Sikandar was a huge blockbuster, and all the songs composed by Kalyaniji-Anandji too were instant hits. Though this romantic solo sung by Lata Mangeshkar is best known as Rakhee song, Amitabh Bachchan and Vinod Khanna too shared screen space with her for the song. Vinod Khanna was also featured in many popular songs of the movie – Oh Saathi Re, Title Track (2 versions) and Pyar Zindagi Hai. Yet my pick is Dil To Hai Dil penned by Anjaan.

7. Qurbani Qurbani This title track featuring Vinod Khanna and Feroz Khan was a huge chartbuster of 1980. This qawwali also showed on reels the real friendship of both these lead actors. After the huge success of his role as Amar in Amar Akbar Antony, he used the same name for this movie as well and the film Qurbani was the biggest hit of the year. The movie also included trendsetting disco tracks featuring Zeenat Aman – Aap Jaisa Koi and Laila Mein Laila. Kalyanji Anandji composed the film’s music (except Biddu’s track – Aap Jaisa Koi). The song was written by the Urdu poet, Faruk Kaiser and rendered by Anwar, Kishore Kumar and Aziz Nazan.

8. Hum Tumhain Chahte Hain – This romantic track too belongs to the movie, Qurbani. Sung by Manhar Udhas, Anand Kumar C, Kanchan, its lyrics were penned by Indeevar. The song featured Zeenat Aman aside Vinod Khanna.

11. Jab Koi Baat Bikad Jaye – After a break from Bollywood in the 1980s, he returned back to silver screen with a string of hits, and Jurm belongs to this genre. His screen chemistry with Meenakshi Sheshadri was well appreciated, the song was sung by Kumar Sanu and Sadhna Sargam. Originally a cover version of popular English song, 500 Miles of the early 1960s, its Hindi lyrics were provided by Indeevar. Music of Jurm was composed by Rajesh Roshan.

12. Anhoni Ko Honi Karde I would like to conclude my list with this grand song which featured three great legends of Bollywood cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor. Shot in the climax scene in the blockbuster movie Amar Akbar Antony, this song became extremely popular. Laxmikant-Pyarelal won best music director trophy at Filmfare for its composition, and lyricist Anand Bakshi too won a trophy, though for another song – Parda Hai Parda. Vinod Khanna was also featured in the song, Hum Ko Tumse Ho Gaya Hai Pyar .

I also like Kishore Kumar songs – Priye Praaneswari (solo) and Do Baaton Ki Mujhko (duet) from Hum Tum Aur Woh, filmed on Vinod Khanna. When Vinod Khanna leaves the world one more colourful chapter of the charming era of 1970s too gets vanished. Yet it’s not as easy for Khanna’s fans to forget his contributions to some of the biggest hits of Bollywood ever. My heart filled condolences.
