Aryamba Pattabhi is a prominent novelist and writer in the Kannada language. Her famous novels include Parampare, Kappu-Bilipu, and Eradu Mukha. Many of her works have been adapted to the silver screen by prominent filmmakers. Her works have been translated into other languages. Aryamba served as the chief editor of “Mahila Sahithya Sameekshe” and “Sahithya Vimarshe”. She has been associated with Kannada Sahitya Dalita Bandaya Movement.

Aryamba Pattabhi was born on 12 March 1936 in Mandya, Karnataka, in British India. B. M Krishnaswamy and Thangamma are her parents. She has 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Aryamba completed her Master’s in Sociology from Mysore University.
She belongs to an illustrious family of writers
Renowned writer, scholar, and translator B. M. Srikantaiah was his paternal uncle. Her elder sister, Anasuya Shankar, known by the pen name Triveni, was a well-known novelist whose works have been adapted to the silver screen. Triveni passed away aged 34, following the birth of a daughter. Her sister Prabhavathi has also published books. Her cousin, Vani, was also a well-known Kannada writer who had received the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award. Thus, she, along with her cousin and elder sister, represents the earliest established female writers of Kannada literature.
She started writing when there were only a few fictional writers in Kannada
When she started writing, her elder sister Anasuya Shankar was already an established figure in Kannada literature. Aryamba Pattabhi followed her sister’s footsteps and established herself as a prominent fictional writer of 20th-century Kannada literature.
Aryamba has published 32 novels, 5 short story collections, and 5 biographies, based on research works. Her portfolio also includes children’s literature, plays, essays, and sports literature. Famous filmmaker Puttanna Kanagal adapted her novel, Kappu-Bilipu, into a feature film. He has also adapted four works of her elder sister to films. State award-winning film Eradu Mukha was also based on her novel.
Her major contributions to Kannada literature
She authored the biography, Thayi Theresa in 1985 and Mother Teresa in 2000. She interviewed Mother Teresa when she visited Mysore. Bharatada Mahapurusharu, Mysuru Maharajaru, and Vishwa Vignanigalu are other biographies.
Aryamba Pattabhi has authored several children’s books since the mid-1970s – Ranadheera Kanteerava Narasimha Raja Odeyar, Cha. Vasudeviah and Vignana Sadhakaru, in four volumes, to mention a few.
Honganasu in 1961, was her first novel. She authored deeply engaging social, family, and psychological dramas that resonated heavily with the public. Her novels include Kamanabillu, Kunike, Vishwadharma, Prakruthi Purusha, Sambandhagalu, Suli, Basavi, Sakumaga, Guri, Apoorva KatheBandaya, Budhimandyathe, Arohana, and a few more.
She is a recipient of several state awards and felicitations.
