Akhila Bhargavan is a budding actress of Malayalam cinema, best known for playing supporting roles. Her role as Karthika, Reenu’s (portrayed by Mamitha Baiju on screen) best friend in 2024 blockbuster rom-com Premalu is her popular role till now. She won SIIMA Award for Best Supporting Actress – Malayalam for this role. She played Sulu, Nazriya Nazim’s helping neighbour in Sookshmadarshini, released the same year.
Akhila Bhargavan pursued her film journey after completing studies
Akhila Bhargavan hails from Payyanur, Kannur. She was born on 17 October 1997. After doing her schooling and graduation from hometown, Akhila completed her PG program in Microbiology from CMS college, Coimbatore in 2020. She pursued her film journey after that.
She loved acting since young and started doing dash mash videos and reels. Some of them went viral. Though she got excited with it, Akhila didn’t even imagine that she would get offers from films. Soon after her studies, she joined a job and within one year, she got married to Rahul in 2021. It was an arranged marriage and he works in Kerala Fire & Rescue Department.
After marriage, Akhila Bhargavan continued doing reels alongside her husband and posted in social media. She got the offer to act in the short film, Anurag Engineering Works, in 2022 because of these reels. Two years later, she appeared in another short film, The Spiral. Her first feature film was Poovan (2023) directed by Vineeth Vasudevan.
Premalu – The turning point of Akhila’s career
Co-writer of Premalu, Kiran Josy was the director of Anurag Engineering Works, the short film in which Akhila acted first. Girish A. D, the director of Premalu was the co-producer of the short film too. That’s how Akhila Bhargavan got the opportunity to appear in the audition, and very soon bagged Karthika’s role in the film. When she got this film, she had already acted in Poovan and Ayalvasi, both released in 2023. She played brief roles.
Earlier, she faced body shaming and lost a few opportunities because of that. When she got her first full-fledged role through Premalu, she was asked to gain body weight. She achieved it through workout and diet, and did the role of Karthika. Thus, she did a lot of preparation for the role. Interestingly, her husband Rahul played her fiancée in Premalu.
Later Akhila Bhargavan played a notable role in Sookshmadarshini, and bagged her next film, Avarachan & Sons
