Nercha Payasam of Francis Assisi Church, also known as Kappalu Palli, at High Court Junction, Ernakulam, is religiously significant. This famous church is dedicated to Mother Novena. Nercha payasam is prepared on her birthday every year. It’s similar to the aravana payasam of Sabari mala. Let me give you its recipe:

Ingredients for Kappalu Palli Nercha Payasam:

  1. Unakkalari (Payasam rice) – 1 kg
  2. Jaggery – 5 kg
  3. Ghee – 100 gm
  4. Cardamom powder – 5 gm
  5. Kalkkandam (sweet sugar cubes of small type) – 10 gm

How to prepare Kappalu Palli Nercha Payasam?

  1. Melt jaggery and extract its impurities.
  2. Add an equal amount of water to the rice and cook it.
  3. When the rice is half-cooked, add the jaggery solution. When it boils, add ghee and fry it well.
  4. When it’s almost done (water is almost evaporated) and payasam resembles a thread when poured using a spoon, add cardamom powder and put the flame off.
  5. Add kalkaandam and when it cools, serve.
