Top 50 Bollywood Songs of R. D. Burman – Kishore Kumar combination
R. D. Burman & Kishore Kumar – two great geniuses associated with Bollywood cinema. In the year 1969 and a couple of years followed by, the duo changed the course of flow of Bollywood music, and in a discussion of Hindi cinema of 1970s can never be moved forward without taking these two big names. Names of R. D. Burman & Kishore Kumar are synchronous to the era of 1970s, and when they joined hands with lyricist Anand Bakshi, many evergreen hits belonging to romantic, philosophic, emotional and fast & breezy genres were born, and most of their tracks have been remixed multiple times and remained popular among youngsters as well.
A brief note on the friendship of R. D. Burman and Kishore Kumar
Pancham and Kishore remained thick friends since their struggling years of early 1950s. But no one predicted then, the duo is to bring storm to Bollywood music with some sensational songs, mostly youth oriented. Along with O. P. Nayyar and Madan Mohan, R. D. Burman was blamed for westernizing Indian film tunes in the era when Bollywood music was dominated by classical and semi-classical tunes and orchestra provided by Indian traditional instruments most. But if we look into the era of 1960s and 1970s in today’s scenario Bollywood music fans may disagree with the opinion of film critics of that time, and most of the tunes by these great composers have already entered the category of evergreen classics. After giving the chartbuster hit songs through Padosan, the duo later worked together for Aradhana in 1969 for the songs originally composed by Pancham da’s father S. D. Rest is, as say goes, it’s history! Pyar Hua Hai Jab Se of Abhilasha is one of the early hits of the duo, and one among the first hit songs of Kishore Kumar when he turned the ghost voice of an actor other than Dev Anand (mostly in association with S. D. Burman).
Story of Aradhana’s music and how it’s connected to the professional career of Kishore da and Pancham da
Though father Burman reserved two special solo songs for Mohammed Rafi, he fell ill and the work was later completed by his son, who recorded those two songs in Kishore’s voice. It’s rumoured that Pancham da ghost composed one or both (Mere Sapnon Ki Rani & Kora Kaagaz), though credits have been given to his father. (It happened with iconic ‘Sar Jo Tere’ from Pyasa and many more songs where S. D gave a final touch to rough tunes of R. D.) But film’s director Shakti Samanta certifies that every tune of the movie was composed by Sachin Dev Burman himself before he went ill, and RD only worked on orchestration. Every piece of instrument to be used was also decided by Sachin Dev Burman and RD followed his instructions only. Rafi was out of India for a world tour for a long time, and Kishore’s name was suggested to Pancham da by director himself.
Roop Tera Mastana and Mere Sapnon Ki Rani became two landmark songs of Bollywood and it catapulted Rajesh Khanna into mega stardom. The film’s music was such a big hit that its film director Shakti Samanta produced next five films only from the music sale of Aradhana!
A new combination was born as early in 1970s – Rajesh Khanna as hero with Kishore da’s voice and Anand Bakshi’s poems composed by Pancham, and they fully dominated Bollywood scene for many years. The combination was repeated in many Hindi movies of the era, and it proved successful. Apart from Rajesh Khanna, the duo has worked for many Bollywood heroes like Dev Anand, Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan etc. Yet the lion share of R. D. Burman – Kishore Kumar combination songs belongs to Rajesh Khanna. R. D. Burman gave maximum hits and his finest compositions to Kishore and Asha, which include both solos and duets.
