Aval Upma

Ingredients for Simple Upma:

1. Ghee – 2 tsp

    Semolina – 2 cups

2. Ghee – 1/4 cup

    Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

    Black gram – 2 tsp

    Dried red chilli – 1, cut into three

    Onion – 1/4 cup, finely chopped

    Green chilli – 2 tsp, sliced into rounds

    Ginger – 1 tsp, finely chopped

    Curry leaves – a few

3. Water – 4.5 cups

   Salt – to taste

How to prepare Simple Upma?

1. Heat a pan on the stove, add 2 tsp ghee, and roast the semolina without changing its color. Set aside.

2. In the same pan, heat 1/4 cup ghee, splutter mustard seeds, then add black gram and sauté until golden.

3. Add the chopped dried red chilli pieces and sauté well.

4. Add onion, green chilli, and ginger, then sauté until softened. Add curry leaves.

5. Pour 4.5 cups of water and add salt to taste. Bring to a boil.

6. When it starts boiling, slowly add the roasted semolina while stirring continuously to avoid lumps.

7. Once it thickens, reduce the flame and gently mix until well combined.

8. Serve hot.

Note: For added taste, grated carrot can also be mixed in. You can also add fried cashews and raisins.
