Chethi Mandaram Thulasi Pichaka Malakal Charthi

Guruvayurappa Ninne Kanikanenam

Adorning you

Ixora, *Mandaram, Basil and jasmine garlands,

I want to see *Kani of yours,

Guruvayurappa…..

Chethi Mandaram Thulasi Pichaka Malakal Charthi

Guruvayurappa Ninne Kanikanenam

Adorning you

Ixora, *Mandaram, Basil and jasmine garlands,

I want to see *Kani of yours,

Guruvayurappa…..

Mayil Peeli Choodikondum Manja Thukil Chuttikondum

Manikkuzhaloothi Kondum Kani Kaanenam

Adorning peacock feathers too,

Wearing yellow dress,

Playing flute too,

I want to see *Kani of yours

Vaakacharthu Kazhiyumbol Vasanapoo Vaniyumbol

Gopikamaar Kothikkunnorudal Kaanenam

After *Vaakacharthu (ceremony) is over,

When you adorn perfumed flowers,

I want to see your body,

Desired by Gopis

Avalpothi Kaikkolluvan Kani Kaanenam

To accept my *rice flakes offerings,

Soaked in the tears of this devotee,

You should give me Kani

End note:

*Kani – First sight soon after waking up, done on the dawn of Vishu day

*Rice flakes story – As per stories in Malayalam, it was Aval (made from rice), which Sudama offered Krishna, when he went to meet him.

*Vaakacharthu – After bathing idol of Guruvayur, he is applied with perfumed oils. Seeing this ritual brings end to sufferings, as per beliefs
