Lokesh Kanagaraj – Tamil film director of ‘Maanagaram’ and ‘Kaithi’ fame

Lokesh Kanagaraj is a successful film director and screenwriter of Tamil cinema, with two back-to-back hits – ‘Maanagaram’ and ‘Kaithi’. Both films scripted and directed by him opened to critical acclaim and were commercially successful. He started off with a segment titled Kalam in anthology movie, Aviyal in 2016. In 2017 he directed his first full-fledged movie – Maanagaram in hyperlink format, which opened to overwhelming reviews from critics. In 2019, his Diwali release Kaithi starring Karthi and Narein was well-received at box office, after which he announced his next project with Vijay and Vijay Sethupathi – the first time both the actors coming together for a single film. It is Vijay’s 64th film.

Lokesh Kanagaraj hails from Coimbatore. He graduated in fashion technology course and then MBA. Then he worked in banking sector for four-and-a-half years before he shot films. His active career in films began in 2016. His first two full-length movies – ‘Maanagaram’ and ‘Kaithi’ were produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, and both the films belonged to thriller genre. Main events of both films unfold within short time span, and both were nail-biting thrillers. Maanagaram mainly concentrated on a story of 48 hours while Kaithi told a story which completes in 6 hours. His next film, now titled as Thalapathy 64 is an investigative thriller with a sports backdrop.

1. He is a banker turned filmmaker, who graduated in fashion technology.

2. For his debut film, ‘Maanagaram’ most of the lead characters were not given names. It’s one of the very rare experiments in Indian cinema.

3. He was inspired from a newspaper clip to script Kaithi
