Kannodu Kanbathellam Song from Jeans (Tamil) – Lyrics in English with Translation

Pa pani panipama

Panipama gamapa sagasani

Panipama gamagasa gamapa

Pa pani panipama

Panipama gamapa sagasani

Panipama gamagasa gamapa

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Kannodu kaanbadhellam thalaiva

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Whatever we see with eyes, hey lord

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Kannodu maniyanaai athanaal

Kannai vittu pirivathillai

Nee ennai vittu pirivathillai

Yet, since you have become pupil of my eyes

You don’t part with my eyes,

And you can’t be separated from me.

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Salasala salasala

Irattai kilavi

Thagathaga thagathaga

Irattai kilavi

Undallo thamizhil undallo

Salasala salasala’ and ‘Thagathaga thagathaga’  (Double words)

Imitating sounds,

Are there…

In Tamil, are there

Pirithu vaithal niyayam illai

Pirithu paarthaal porulum illai

Rendallo rendum ondrallo

It’s not justified to separate them (words)

If separated, there is no meaning.

Both of them (the words) are same, isn’t it?

Dhinaku dhinaku dhina dhinthinnaanaa

Naagirudhaani dhongirudhaani dhinathom

Dhinaku dhinaku dhina dhinthinnaanaa

Naagirudhaani dhongirudhaani dhinathom

Iravum pagalum vanthaalum

Naal enbathu ondrallo

Kaalgal irandu kondaalum

Payanam enbathu ondrallo

Even though there comes both day & night,

The entity called ‘day’ is one.

Even though, we walk with two legs

Our journey is one!

Idhayam irandu endraalum

Kaadhal enbathu ondrallo

Though the hearts are two,

The entity called ‘love’ is one!

Kannodu kaanbadhellam thalaiva

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Whatever we see with eyes, hey lord

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim

Thagra thagra thagradhim thagajam

Andril paravai irattai piravi

Ondril ondraai vaazhum piravi

Piriyadhae vittu piriyadhae

Nightingale bird is a twin birth (mates are born together)

A birth where they live for each other (soulmates)

Won’t separate…..

They won’t get separated from one another

Kannum kannum irattai piravi

Oru vizhi azhuthaal iruvizhi aruvi

Pozhiyadho anbae vazhiyadho

Both the eyes are born as twins

If one eye sheds tears,

Both the eyes turn stream (together)

Won’t the other eye shed too?

Won’t it shower love too?

Dhinaku dhinaku dhina dhinthinnaanaa

Naagirudhaani dhongirudhaani dhinathom

Dhinaku dhinaku dhina dhinthinnaanaa

Naagirudhaani dhongirudhaani dhinathom

Oruvar thoongum thookathil

Iruvar kanavugal kaanugirom

Oruvar vaangum suvaasathil

Iruvar irudhayam vaazhugirom

When one is sleeping, both are dreaming.

In one person’s breath, two hearts are living.

Thaavikolla mattum thaan

Thani thaniyae thedugindrom

When only the hearts are in grief,

They search separate/independent.

Pa pa ni ni sa sa ga

Ga ma ma pa pa ni ni sa sa

Ni sa ga ma pa ni dha pa ma

Ga ma pa ni sasa ga ra sa ni

Sa ma ga ri sa ni dha

Kannodu kaanbadhellam thalaiva ….

Whatever we see with eyes, hey Lord

Ri ri ri sasa ni sa

Ri ri sa sa ri ri ni ni sa sa

Ga ri sa ni si ga ri sa ni dha

Ni dha pa ma ga ni sa ga sa

Ga ma ga ma pa dha pa ma

Ni ma pa na sa ga ri sa ga

Ri sa ni sa ni dha pa ma

Ga ri sa ri ma

Kannodu kaanbadhellam thalaiva

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Kangaluku chonthamillai

Whatever we see with eyes, hey lord

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Doesn’t belong to our eyes!

Kannodu maniyanaai athanaal

Kannai vittu pirivathillai

Nee ennai vittu pirivathillai

Yet, since you have become pupil of my eyes

You don’t part with my eyes,

And you can’t be separated from me.

End note: In the first line of Mukda, the word ‘thalaiva’ has been used, which literally means ‘leader’. As the meaning doesn’t suit the lines perfect, I changed to ‘Hey Lord’, to show, she is addressing him/her lover with respect.
