Job Kurian is a singer and composer who works in Mollywood. He is also associated with indie music. In parallel music, he is quite successful. In 2007, he made his debut as a playback singer and turned a music composer in 2015 with Mohanlal starrer Rasam.
He is one among those talented artists who got exposure through reality shows, without any formal training in music. He was a runner up of Super Star, aired on Amrita TV in 2006. With a dream debut as a playback singer with some memorable songs, this talented artist later composed some noted film songs. As an independent artist too, Job Kurian is successful. “Pakalo Kaanaathe” from Saudi Vellakka bagged him SIIMA for Best Male Playback Singer – Malayalam.

The reality show Super Star brought Job Kurian to limelight
He was born in Vattiyoorkavu, Thiruvananthapuram on 29 July 1982. Kuttanadu is his hometown, but grew up in Thiruvananthapuram. After schooling in the capital city, he pursued B.Tech. at Malanad College of Engineering, Karnataka. In 2006 he participated in Super Star, aired on Amrita TV, where he finished as runner-up. Though he didn’t win the show, he left a big impression on music buffs.
The following year, he marked his debut as a playback singer through the film, Goal. He rendered voice for “Oh Mariya” song. Same year, “AathmavinKaaval” of Black Cat also got released. Since 2011, he regular in Mollywood as a playback singer, with hit songs to his credit.
Urumi gave him the big break as a playback singer
In 2009 he sang “Chanjalam” of noted film, Ritu. Yet his real break came through “Aaranne Aarane” song of Urumi, and there was no turning back after that. “Melle Kollum” of 22 Female Kottayam, “Ennalakale” of Honey Bee, “Thaazhe Nee Tharame” of Thira and “Mandaarame” of Ohm Shanthi Oshaana are among his early hits.
Thaalam – The independent project marked his debut as a composer
He composed the album, Thaalam, alongside Charan and Yakzan, and since then he owns many hit singles to his credit as a composer. In 2015, he marked his debut as a music composer of films through Rasam. Still now, it remains his single work in movies. He continued his career as a playback singer even after turning a composer and doing albums. Kannodu song which he sang aside Mridula Warrier went viral. Nizhal is his recent musical album.
His top hits as a playback singer include – “Aaranne Aarane” from Urumi, Manikyachirakulla from Idukki Gold, Chillu Raathal from Kali, Ponnane from Theevandi, Kaavalaay Chekavar from Empuraan and “Vaanara Lokam” from Kishkindha Kaandam. Rex Vijayan is his biggest inspiration in music. He has gratitude towards Deepak Dev and Bijibal, who gave him early opportunities.
Job Kurian – Some interesting and less-known facts
1. While doing schooling at Bhavan’s Senior Secondary School, Kodunganoor, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran was his schoolmate.
2. Apart from independent singing, he has associated with bands like Avial and Shankar Tucker Band for music projects.
3. He doesn’t belong to a musical family, and didn’t even own a musical background or formal training when he appeared in the reality show for the first time.
4. He married Athira in 2010, his co-contestant in Super Star. He was going through a breakup and Athira came for consoling him, which grew into a new bond. He expressed his love, soon after she got eliminated from the show.
5. Kurien has become the chief guest at Athira’s school in Kannur, soon after the reality show. She was a 17-year-old student who appeared in school uniform. They got caught red-handed by musician Balabhaskar, who also attended the program. Though he asked Job Kurien, he denied saying, she is a small girl, for which Balu replied, 17-year-old is no longer a kid.
6. Rex Vijayan advised him not to fall into the loop of cover songs, and encouraged him to use his creativity and talents. His advices helped his career significantly, thus bringing improvisation to his work.
7. He co-composed background score of Kannada film, Whistle.
