The real beauty of Unnai Kaanadhu Naan Song

Lyrics written by Kamal Hassan is something which attracts me most to this song. For the first time when I came to know that the lyrics were written by him, I was so surprised. The way he included deep meaning inside the lyrics, only experienced lyricists can. To be honest, Tamil cinema has not explored his hidden talents as a beautiful lyricist. The song is a perfect blend of longing of love and spirituality, and the true soul lies in those lines how Kamal Hassan wrote the lyrics through the eyes of a woman. He beautifully shows it off on screen as well, seeing himself as a woman, which makes the song extra-ordinary. 

The lines beginning as ‘Unnai Kaanadhu Naan’ itself clearly states how Radha is dismayed by the way she longs to see her Krishna. She reveals the agonies and her deep feelings for Krishna. How she feels for Krishna are told the lines. Through the lines, she also tells how her existance is meaningless without his presence. There are many beautiful blocks in this song. Either it’s the devotional aspect explored through the eyes of Radha or her intense longing for Krishna, with romantic subtext, the songs stands out for its literal beauty.

Though I am a great fan of Bollywood songs, I was hugely disappointed by the way the song was written by Javed Akhtar. With huge respect to this great writer, though I am verymuch reluctant, I have to share this. The song lost its soul somewhere in translation, honest, but true.

This Kathak song was tuned based on Hamswadhwani raga, and Kamal Hassan plays a Kathak guru, teaching his students. Andrea Jeremiah plays one among his students, and the song, to some extend mirrors the romantic bonding of these two also. Opening lines of the song where Radha calls out from Krishna in different names was sung by Kamal Hassan himself, and other lines by Shankar Mahadevan.
