Snehidhanae Snehidhanae Song from Alai Payuthey (Tamil) – Lyrics in English with Translation

Snehidhanae Snehidhanae

Netru munniravil unnaithilavu madiyil

Last night, in the soft moonlight on your lap,

Netru munniravil unnaithilavu madiyil

Last night, in the soft moonlight on your lap,

Kaatru nuzhaivadhu oh uyir

Kalandhu kalithirundhen

The breeze brushed past… oh my life…

I was lost in your joy… In your intimacy

Indru vinnilavil andha eera ninaivil

Tonight, under the same moonlight,

Kandru thavippadhu oh manam

Kalangi pulambugiren

Those memories haunt me… my heart aches…

I am disturbed… and crying out…

Koondhal nelivil ezhil kola charivil

In the curls of your long hair and the curves of your elegant beauty

Koondhal nelivil ezhil kola charivil

In the curls of your long hair and the curves of your elegant beauty

Garuvam azhindhadhadi

En garuvam azhindhadhadi (M)

My pride is shattered…

I lost my pride and myself.

Snehidhanae snehidhanae

Ragasiya snehidhanae

Oh dear male friend, Oh dear male friend,

Oh, my secret male friend,

Chinna chinnadhaai korikkaigal

Sevikodu snehidhanae

These small, little desires…

Please listen, my love (friend)

Idhae azhutham azhutham

Idhae anaippu anaippu

This closeness… this longing…

This embrace… this warmth…

Vaazhvin ellai varai

Vendum vendum

I want this, till the end of our life!

Vaazhvin ellai varai

Vendum vendume

Yes, till life’s last moment, I want this…

Snehidhanae snehidhanae

Ragasiya snehidhanae (F)

Oh dear male friend, Oh dear male friend,

Oh, my secret male friend,

Chinna chinna athumeeral purivaai

With tiny, gentle breaches, show your affection

En cell ellaam pookkal pookka cheivaai

Malargalil malarvaai

Make every cell of me bloom like flowers

And you too… bloom inside each one of those flowers

Poopparikkum bakthan pola medhuvaai

Like a devotee who gently plucks flowers,

Naan thoongumbodhu viral nagam kalaivaai

Sathamindri thuyilvaai

When I sleep, stroke my hair with your fingertips

Sleep silently beside me…

Aiviral idukkil olive ennai poosi

Sevaiyum seiyavendum

By coddling your five fingers with olive oil

I want you to serve me

Neeyezhumbodhu naan azha nerndhaal

Thudaikkindra viral vendum

When you cry, if I cry too

I need the same fingers to wipe off my tears

Snehidhanae snehidhanae

Ragasiya snehidhanae

Oh dear male friend, Oh dear male friend,

Oh, my secret male friend,

Chinna chinnadhaai korikkaigal

Sevikodu snehidhanae (F)

These small, little desires…

Please listen, my love (friend)

Netru munniravil unnaithilavu madiyil

Last night, in the soft moonlight on your lap,

Kaatru nuzhaivadhu oh uyir

Kalandhu kalithirundhen

The breeze brushed past… oh my life…

I was lost in your joy… In your intimacy

Indru vinnilavil andha eera ninaivil

Tonight, under the same moonlight,

Kandru thavippadhu oh manam

Kalangi pulambugiren

Those memories haunt me… my heart aches…

I am disturbed… and crying out…

Koondhal nelivil ezhil kola charivil

In the curls of your long hair and the curves of your elegant beauty

Koondhal nelivil ezhil kola charivil

In the curls of your long hair and the curves of your elegant beauty

Garuvam azhindhadhadi

En garuvam azhindhadhadi (M)

My pride is shattered…

I lost my pride and myself.

Sonnadhellaam pagalilae puriven

Everything you say, I’ll understand in the day

Sonnadhellaam pagalile purivaen

Everything you say, I’ll understand in the day

Nee sollaadhadhum iravilae puriven

Whatever you didn’t say, I’ll understand at night…

Kaadhil koondhal nuzhaippen

Brushing your hair, I’ll whisper into your ears

Undhan sattai nanum pottu alaiven

Nee kulikkaiyil nanum konjam nanaiven

I’ll wear your shirt and walk around

I’ll get drenched a little too, while you shower,

Uppu moottai sumappen

I’ll piggyback you (I’ll carry even heavy loads for you)

Unnaiyalli eduthu ullangaiyil padithu

Kaikuttaiyil olithukkolven

I’ll lift you, hold you in my palms,

And hide you in my handkerchief

Velivarumbodhu vidudhalai seidhu

Vendum varam vaangikkolven

When you come out,

I’ll release you only after getting the boon I want

Snehidhanae snehidhanae

Ragasiya snehidhanae

Oh dear male friend, Oh dear male friend,

Oh, my secret male friend,

Chinna chinnadhaai korikkaigal

Sevikodu snehidhanae

These small little desires…

Please listen, my love (friend)

Interesting Notes about the Snehidhanae song

Through her words, Snehidhanae Snehidhanae ….. Ragasiya snehidhanae, she says everything. The current situation of the lovers and their feelings are clearly conveyed through these lines. No wonder why, when this music album got released just before the marriage of Shalini with Ajith, with whom she was dating, this single line became an instant hit. Meaning is – ‘Male Friend, Male Friend… Secret Male Friend’ and it blends well with soulful music of A. R. Rahman and melodious voice of Sadhana Sargam. I still remember, Snehidhanae snehidhanae was the top Tamil song of the year. Along with this song, Thaniya song of Rhythm also was frequently played in radio stations. Please don’t skip its translations too.

When we discuss the situation of this iconic Snehidhanae snehidhanae – romantic track, the lovers get secretly married, yet going back to their respective homes and keeping their marriage secret from their dear ones. So, her husband becomes her male friend whom she keeps as secret, which was well written in verse by immensely talented Vairamuthu.

Many of the words in this poem are not a part of common Tamil, and hats off to the lyricist for penning such wonderful lyrics. Gulzar wrote Hindi version of all songs of Alaipayuthey, and they became huge chartbusters too. Yet still he couldn’t recreate the magic of ‘Pachai Nirame’ and ‘Snehidhanae’. With all the respect to the legendary lyricist & poet, I am saying this. To add, Hindi language is much simpler comparing south Indian languages, while Tamil can include complex lyrics too. That can be a reason.

Let me conclude this post saying, Alaipayuthey is my most favourite Tamil album ever. Pachai Nirame is my most favourite Tamil song. But still, Snehidhanae Snehidhanae song is also very special to me. You can read English translation of Pachai Nirame here.

In the film, I noticed an interesting thing. Pachai Nirame song appears first. The song begins with the lines, Sagiyae snegidhiyae, which is an ode to love by the love stuck boy to girl. Snehidhanae Snehidhanae song comes later, and it’s literally a solo track of a girl’s feelings for her love in an expressive way. It’s more like girl’s response to the boy in the same coin, sharing the same kind of emotions. I believe, while penning lyrics for the film, Vairamuthu had a clear idea of this, and definitely both these tracks of the album stand out.
