Top 25 Bollywood songs of Alka Yagnik tuned by Anu Malik

Anu Malik remained one of the most sought music composers of Bollywood in the 1990s, while Alka Yagnik remained the most successful female playback singer of the decade. Since late 1980s, Anu Malik has experimented with different male voices – From Kumar Sanu to Udit Narayan and Sonu Nigam. Yet Alka Yagnik remained his first personal choice for female voice till Shreya Ghoshal established as the leading female voice. Till then Anu Malik – Alka Yagnik duo had a long term successful association for nearly 15 years, and it’s not possible to list 25 of the best combo songs. Yet I have tried by level best. Countless songs have been credited to this combo. Hope you would like the list of top 25 Bollywood songs of Alka Yagnik tuned by Anu Malik. I have sorted songs based on the year of release.

Apart from solos, she has recorded numerous duets aside Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan, and also Sonu Nigam in Anu Malik’s tunes. Till 1995 her maximum duets recorded by Anu Malik were aside Kumar Sanu and Vinod Rathod. In the second half of 1990s, she recorded several duets with both Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu. Since early 2000s, she was one of the most sought female singers for duets aside Sonu Nigam, and Anu Malik recorded many of their duets since late 1990s (and also a few with Udit Narayan). While I prepared the list of songs of Anu Malik with different singers, I felt more confused while preparing this list, and many songs featured in other lists are not included here. That’s the depth of this combo of songs. And here goes my list.

1. Badalon Mein Chup Raha Hai from Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayi (1993) – Lyrics: Qateel Shifai, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

This romantic duet of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik was filmed on Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Roy, and is one of the early hit songs of the composer. It’s one of the early duets recorded by Anu Malik with these two leading composers too. This romantic tragedy directed by Mahesh Bhatt, based on his real life incidents was a box office flop. However its songs are still popular. The composer extensively used the voices of both singers to record his songs of 1990s, and the duo remained the most sought voices of the decade too.

2. Baazigar O Baazigar from Baazigar (1993) – Lyrics: Nawab Arzoo, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

Baazigar was the first major hit of Anu Malik’s career, and the title track is the first ever recorded romantic song of Bollywood’s evergreen onscreen couple – Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. This dream sequence was lovely filmed too. Both the playback singers received Filmfare nominations, and it’s one of the early popular duets of the duo. It was her first Filmfare nomination for any Anu Malik song, earned 9 in total, but never received any.

3. Churake Dil Mera from Mein Khiladi Mein Anari (1994) – Lyrics: Rani Malik, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

One of the finest romantic tunes ever composed by the composer, the song was beautifully filmed on Akshay Kumar and Shilpa Shetty, who were then in a rumoured relationship. Shilpa was only a newcomer in the industry with a couple of releases, while Akshay Kumar was slowly gaining his foot in the industry with his ‘Khiladi’ image. The success of this movie, and the popularity of this song helped them lot during their early phase in Bollywood cinema.  Anu Malik reused the tune of Antara to compose Sambhala Hai Maine for Naaraaz the same year, and the song too was popular. Alka Yanik received a Filmfare nomination for this song.

4. Raah Mein Unse from Vijaypath (1994) – Lyrics: Zameer Kazmi , Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

Alka Yagnik earned a Filmfare nomination for this song. This romantic song was filmed on Tabu and Ajay Devgan, who still form a hit Jodi onscreen even after 25 years of film release.

5. Raja Ko Rani Se from Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) – Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri, Co-singer: Udit Narayan /Kumar Sanu

This romantic duet will always be counted among the top 10 most popular songs of Alka ever. The song had two duet versions with Udit Narayan and Kumar Sanu, and the version aside Udit Narayan became popular. Aamir Khan plays the role of a ‘music teacher’ to Manisha Koirala in this song, and as the song processes, they fall in love.

6. Palkein Ho Khuli Ya Bandh from Takkar (1995)  – Lyrics: Rani Malik, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

This soft melody was filmed on Sonali Bandre and Sunil Shetty, who made a lovely onscreen pair in the mid-1990s.

7. Aankhon Mein Baso Ho from Takkar (1995)  – Lyrics: Maya Govind, Co-singer: Abhijeet Bhattacharya

The movie was only average at box office. However this song was an instant chartbuster and the screen chemistry of Sonali Bandre and Sunil Shetty was well appreciated.

8. Jhanjariya from Krishna (1996)  – Lyrics: Anand Raaj Anand, Solo

The song had two solo versions in Abhijeet and Alka’s voice, and both versions were popular. For its female rendition, Karishma appeared as a stage performer on stage.

9. Na Woh Inkaar from Himalay Putra (1997)  – Lyrics: Dev Kohli, Co-singer: Udit Narayan

The movie is long-forgotten, but this romantic song featuring the debutants – Akshay Khanna and Anjala Javeri is still popular among the youth.

10. Chamma Chamma from China Gate (1998)  – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singers: Sapna Awasthi, Vinod Rathod and Shankar Mahadevan

Urmila Matondkar made a special appearance as a dancer for this boring film starring veterans. Though the movie which took inspirations from Sholay was made on a huge budget, nothing was entertaining in the entire movie except the 5-minute act of Urmila. Alka Yagnik earned a Filmfare nomination for this song.

11. Soldier Soldier from Soldier (1998) – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

The movie included some of the finest romantic tracks of Anu Malik – Alka Yagnik combination, and all the tracks of the album were extremely popular. The songs also got noticed for its splendid foreign locations. The title track was filmed on Preity Zinta and Bobby Deol, and was the first commercial hit of Zinda.

12. Mehfil Mein Baar Baar from Soldier (1998)  – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

As I told above, all the songs are extremely good, and it’s not easy to make choices. While I chose ‘Mere Dil Jigar Se’ over Mehfil Mein Baar Baar for other lists featuring Anu Malik songs, I thought of including this duet in this list. It’s one of the most beautiful moments of life when parents approve a love relationship and give blesses, and this song was filmed on one such occasion.

13. Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aye from Soldier (1998) – Lyrics: Sameer, Solo

The song also had a male version sung by Sonu Nigam. However the female version featuring Preity Zinta was popular.

14. Chhup Gaya from Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999)  – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singer: Udit Narayan

The movie is known for some of the best tunes of Anu Malik in the 1990s, and it’s the single track of Alka Yagnik in the entire album. The song was filmed as a dream sequence of Kajol, a newly wedded bride, and Anil Kapoor plays her better half.

15. Dil Mera Akela from Mela (2000) – Lyrics: Sameer , Co-singer: Kumar Sanu

It was one of the last recorded duets of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik recorded by Anu Malik. The movie was a terrible flop. But almost all its songs got noticed. The song depicts the intense love of the screen couple, Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna, who appeared together for the first and last time for this movie.

16. Mere Humsafar from Refugee (2000)  – Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Co-singer: Sonu Nigam

The song is best known as an Alka Yagnik song, though it includes Sonu Nigam’s voice too. The movie included 4 duets of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik, and its popularity established them as the leading playback choices for duets for the next few years. Taal Pe Jab, Aisa Lagta Hai and Panchi Nadiyan are the other duets, which I excluded from this list to make space for more Alka Yagnik songs. I have added them all the bottom of the list. 17. Haye Mera Dil from Josh (2000) – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singer: Udit Narayan

Definitely one of the best ever duets of Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, Hai Mera Dil was one of the top songs of the year too. Anu Malik has drawn inspirations from Gypsy Kings’ Djobi Djoba and Brian Hyland’s ‘Sealed with a kiss’, yet the composer sealed it in his name through his versatility in the field of modifying tunes.

18. Haare Haare from Josh (2000) – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singer: Udit Narayan

This sad song featuring Aishwaya Rai and Chandrachur Singh took inspirations from Vangelis’ ‘Conquest of paradise’, yet it’s an Indian version.

19. Tu Hawa Hai from Fiza (2000) – Lyrics: Gulzar , Co-singer: Sonu Nigam

The song was lovely filmed on Karishma Kapoor and model Bikram Saluja, who made a rare screen appearance together for this film. It was year 2000 which began the successful collaboration of Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik for romantic duets, which continued for a few more years, and Anu Malik also played a magnificent role in it.

20. Aaja Mahiya from Fiza (2000)  – Lyrics: Gulzar , Co-singer: Udit Narayan

The song filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Neha was one of the best songs of the year, and always counted among the top songs of Hrithik Roshan ever. However Neha had a short career in Bollywood, just like her brief role added in this movie.

21. Eli Re Eli from Yadein (2001) – Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Co-singers: Udit Narayan, Hema Sardesai & Kavita Krishnamurty

The song was a craze when it got released, and was filmed on the group of three sisters of a family headed by Kareena Kapoor. Alka Yagnik’s voice was used for Kareena Kapoor in this particular song, while Hema Sardesai & Kavita Krishnamurty for rest two. Kavita Krishnamurty’s verses were equally appreciated. Hrithik Roshan and Jackie Shroff also appear at the climax of the song, which follows the wedding sequence of one among the sisters.

22. San Sanana from Asoka (2001)  – Lyrics: Anand Bakshi, Co-singer: Hema Sardesai

Alka Yagnik earned a Filmfare nomination for this song. Though she has been nominated for 9 songs tuned by Anu Malik till now, she was not fortunate enough to receive a trophy. The song featuring Kareena Kapoor and Shah Rukh Khan was an instant chartbuster. Interestingly Anu Malik gave music to 5 Kareena movies in a row right from her debut, and all her movies released in 2000 & 2001, except Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. In 2003 also, Anu Malik composed three of her films in a row, and mostly recorded her songs in Alka Yagnik’s voice followed by Chithra.

23. Roshini Se from Asoka (2001)  – Lyrics: Gulzar , Co-singer: Abhijeet Bhattacharya

The song shared some sizzling moments between Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor, who worked together in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham the same year as brother/sister-in-law.

24. Chori Chori from Om Jai Jagadish (2002)  – Lyrics: Sameer, Co-singers: Sonu Nigam and Kunal Ganjawala

The romantic song was filmed on Abhishek Bachchan and Tara Sharma in a desert, and it was not an easy task. It seems Bachchan wore a pair of sunglasses to protect his eyes from sandstorm, just kidding. He definitely looks handsome. Kunal Ganjawala provided back vocals for the duet sung by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik.

25. Raag Banke from Badhaai Ho Badhaai (2002) – Lyrics: Javed Akhtar, Co-singer: Shaan

The soft song featuring Anil Kapoor and Shilpa Shetty is my personal favourite, and that’s why I included here. It’s one of the very rare duets of Alka and Shaan, recorded by Anu Malik. The movie also included another popular track of Alka Yagnik – Teri Zindagi Mein Pyar Hai.
