Shraddha Kapoor – Top Bollywood actress best known for her works in Aashique 2, ABCD-2, Ek Villain, Sahoo, Stree etc

Shraddha Kapoor is one of the top Bollywood actresses of the decade of 2010s. She marked her screen debut with 2010 flop film Teen Patti, sharing screen space with Big B, Madhavan and Ben Kingsley, played lead role in Luv Ka The End in 2011, which received limited success and shot to instant fame with her third release – Aashiqui 2 in 2013. A sequel to musical hit Aashiqui released in the late 1980s, she was paired with Aditya Roy Kapoor for this romantic tragedy, which was well received by public, and its music too was well appreciated. Later she continued her success streak through ABCD-2, Ek Villain, Stree etc. In 2019 she marked her south Indian debut through Telugu-Hindi bilingual, Saaho, co-starring Prabhas of Baahubali fame.

Shraddha Kapoor is the daughter of Bollywood bad man, Shakti Kapoor

She was born into a family in Mumbai, with strong link to Bollywood. She was born in 1987 as the daughter of top Bollywood villain of 1980s and early 1990s, Shakti Kapoor and Shivangi Kolhapure, sister of Bollywood actresses, Padmini Kolhapure and Tejaswini Kolhapure. Her elder brother Siddhanth Kapoor is also a Bollywood actor. Her father is of Punjabi origin while her mother is from Kolhapure, Maharastra, which has links with the legendary musical family of Mangeshkar sisters.

Her maternal grandfather Pandharinath Kolhapure is the nephew of classical musician Deenanath Mangeshkar of Kolhapur, while her maternal grandmother hailed from Panaji. Thus she is the great-niece of Mangeshkar sisters, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Meena Khadikar, Usha Mangeshkar and also Hridaynath Mangeshkar, closely linked to Hindustani & Bollywood music.

She wanted to become an actress since young

As a child she used to put on parents’ clothes, and say film dialogues in front of a mirror. She also used to dance to Bollywood tunes, and befriended many star kids like Varun Dhavan. She completed her schooling at American School of Bombay, and Bollywood actors – Athiya Shetty and Tiger Shroff were her schoolmates. Later she enrolled for psychology at Boston University. But she quit studies following her screen debut with Teen Patti in 2010.

Her debut film Teen Patti was a flop. She received favourable responses for Luv Ka The End in 2011. She along with Aditya Roy Kapoor – Aashique 2, took the nation by storm. Both their sizzling chemistry and songs were well received by youth. In fact Aashique 2 became the most popular musical album of the decade, which included chartbusters like “Tum Hi Ho” and “Sunn Raha Hai“. Her looks and acting performance as lead actress Aarohi, an aspiring singer was even compared to Madhuri Dixit. She also bagged her first Filmfare nomination for this role.

After the success of Aashique 2, she played female leads in two box office hits – Ek Villain and Haider, both released in 2014. Interestingly her character dies in both these films. The success of ABCD 2 (2015) and Baaghi (2016), thus 5 films in a row established her as one of the most successful and highly paid actresses of the decade. However her next few movies – Rock On 2, Ok Jaanu (co-starring with Aashique-2 costar, Aditya Roy Kapoor) and Haseena Parkar flopped at box office, and Half Girlfriend, co-starring Arjun Kapoor fared average at box office.

She returned in a bang with the super success of Stree released in 2018, a women-centric film, which told a horror comedy story in a new style. She also shared screen space with Haider co-star Shahid Kapoor in Batti Gul Meter Chalu, which opened to negatice reviews. She signed Saaho, her first South Indian project opposite Prabhas the same year. The movie released in multiple languages in 2019 failed to collect the total expenses of the movie, and the movie was panned by critics as well. However the comedy drama, Chhichhore released one week later turned to be a box office hit, thus bringing her career back to track.

After working with her childhood friend Varun Dhawan in hit movie, ABCD 2, she was paired with him for the second time for yet another movie based on contemporary dance, Street Dancer 3D. She also shared screen space with Tiger Shroff for the second time for Baaghi 3. Both these films released in the first quarter of 2020 opened to negative reviews and flopped at box office.

Shraddha Kapoor – Some interesting and less-known facts

1. She was a tomboyish girl while she was a child.

2. She played soccer and handball during her academics. At home she was brought up as a Maharastrian girl, though she is half-Punjabi.

3. She is scared of lightning right from childhood. She wants to hold someone’s hands when lightning happens.

4. At the age of 16, she got a chance to play lead opposite Salman Khan in a movie. As she wanted to concentrate in her studies, she turned that offer down. Salman was impressed by one of her school performances at Boston University.

5. She has been brilliant in academics and scored 95% marks in higher secondary exams. However she wanted to pursue acting. In fact she discontinued her graduation after receiving a film offer.

6. She and Tiger Shroff worked together in Baagi, which was a box office hit, and also its sequel Baaghi 3. They were school mates at American School of Bombay during their teens. At the time of release of Baagi, they revealed that they had a crush on each other while at school, but never proposed to each other.

7. As she is linked to a musical family, she also took lessons in Hindustani music from maternal grandfather, and has also done playback singing in Bollywood. She rendered her voice for a few songs filmed on her, such as “Phir Bhi Tumko Chaahungi” from Half Girlfriend, “Galliyan” from Ek Villain, “Do Jahaan” from Haider, “Bezubaan Phir Se” from ABCD 2 etc. “Galliyan” was her first recorded song.

8. “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashique 2 is widely accepted as the top Bollywood track of the decade, and this single song filmed on Kapoors established Arijit Singh as the leading male playback voice of Hindi cinema, and his first Filmfare award for best playback singer. He went on to win 5 more awards in this category till 2020 except 2015, including a hat-trick, and equaling Kumar Sanu’s award for winning the honour 5 times in a row.

9. She made special appearance in “Dance Basanti” song of Ungli and “High Rated Gabru” song of Nawabzaade. She also played a cameo role in Kareena Kapoor starrer Gori Tere Pyaar Mein and also Tiger Shroff starrer A Flying Jatt.

10. In 2015, she launched her own line of clothing for women, ‘Imara’, in association with Amazon.com. She also endorses many leading brands and is also associated with charity activities.

11. Ankit Tiwari composed and rendered his voice for two of the finest songs of Shraddha Kapoor movies – Sun Raha Hai from Aashique 2 and Galliyan from Ek Villain. While she appears in the male version of Galliyan sung by Tiwari, she marked her playback career by rendering her voice for its female version. Male version of Sun Raha Hai doesn’t feature the actress, but she appears in the female version sung by Shreya Ghoshal.

12. Chocolates, tea, Japanese food and cupcakes belong to the list of her favourite food menu. In fact she is obsessed to tea.

13. Gardening is her favourite hobby. She also loves adventurous sports and is a trained and certified scuba diver.

14. There were rumours that she was dating Rock On 2 co-star Farhan Akhtar. But the rumours died soon.

15. ‘Andaz Apna Apna’ is her most favourite film done by her father.

16. As a child she believed that her father had supernatural powers, because he used to return home after shooting without changing costumes.

17. She rejected Aurengazeb, and also cancelled three-films deal of Yash Raj Films to sign ‘Aashique 2’ which proved to be the turning point of her career.
