Aluri Chakrapani – Famous Telugu filmmaker of Maya Bazaar and Gundamma Katha

Aluri Chakrapani was a National award winning filmmaker who predominantly worked in Telugu cinema. He was a film producer, director and screen writer who produced Tamil, Kannada, Odia and Hindi movies too. He was also a writer and translator, and the founder of Chandamama children magazine. He authored several short stories and novels in Telugu. His movie Maduve Madinodu (1965) won National Film Award for Best Kannada film. Maya Bazaar (1957) and Gundamma Katha (1962) are his major works in Telugu which won best film award at Filmfare.

He hailed from Tenali, Guntur of state Andhra Pradesh. He belonged to an agricultural family. Initially he worked with Famous Films production house at Mumbai before moving to south Indian film industry. Under the banner Vijaya Vauhini he co-produced iconic films like Patala Bhairavi, Maya Bazar, Gundamma Katha, Missamma, Shavukaru, and Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu. He produced a total of 35 movies.

1. He learnt Bengali, Sanskrit and English, and also learnt Hindi from renowned writer Vraj Nandan Sharma.

2. He translated many Bengali works to Telugu. He also wrote short stories and novels in Telugu.

3. He was also a partner of Vijaya Productions and was associated with Vijaya Vauhini Studios.
