Mujeeb Majeed is an immensely talented music composer belonging to Malayalam cinema. Apart from composing tracks and background score for films, he is also a music arranger and singer. His association with the talented filmmaker Dinjith Ayyathan contributed two of his career-best performances as a background scorer. His background score for the director’s back-to-back hits, Kishkindha Kaandam (2024) and Eko (2025) – mystic thrillers, were praised by critics and audience alike. Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam (2021) and Rekhachithram (2025) are other major works.

Mujeeb Majeed mentions A. R. Rahman as his primary music inspiration

Mujeeb Majeed was born on 21 September 1985 in Thrissur. He belongs to a family, closely associated with music. Though not trained in music, he owns a music enthusiast family with many members being performing artists. Mujeeb’s grandfather was a self-taught percussionist and his uncles used to sing with several musical troupes.

During his teens, he got deeply inspired by A. R. Rahman’s work in Taal, and started seeing him as his music idol. He was 14 back then, and from that moment he decided to pursue a career in music. He graduated in commerce and sideways started experiments in music production. He also worked in a music studio those days. Joining the degree was just to please his parents and he was fully concentrated on music.

He composed the title track of a television show titled Hridayaragam

Hridayaragam was a very popular music show anchored by playback singer Asha G. Menon at late nights, where nostalgic film songs were played. Asha was his friend, and that’s how he bagged his first opportunity to compose its title track in the early 2000s. He composed for short films and also associated with Kannada film scores, before his debut Malayalam debut. He was settled in Bangalore those days. It took 8 years for his Malayalam debut.

In 2017, he composed music for the short film, Grace Villa. Asif Ali starrer Mandharam in 2018 directed by Vijesh Vijay was his first movie as a music composer. Actor-singer Shabareesh Verma introduced him to the director. The album had 5 tracks and 2 bit songs, each belonging to a different mood.

After Mandharam, he continued composing music for short films and in 2021 won Kerala State Television Award for Best Music for his short film Pawssible. Same year he composed music for state and national award-winning film, Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam. The songs like Payyaram and Chingari became instant hits. He did the background score too.

He is more popular as a background scorer

Though he composes both tracks and background, he gained more recognition through background score. He is brilliant in composing background score for thrillers, Dinjith Ayyathan’s Kishkindha Kaandam (2024) and Eko (2025) being the best instances. Mujeeb Majeed’s background scores played magnificent roles to make these theatre experiences a bit different. His score elevated both these films to another level.

He composed songs and background score for the films & web series – Perilloor Premier League, 1744 White Alto, Rekhachithram, Dheeran and Kalamkaval. His song ‘Nila Kaayum’ from Kalamkaval with a retro vibe went viral after the movie release. He also composed the background score for the thriller, Rautu Ka Raaz in 2024 which marked his Bollywood debut. The movie was released over ZEE5 to positive reviews.

Apart from scoring for films, he has composed some singles too. He composed and recorded the singles – Haara Haara (From “Loser”) and Haram, in his voice. His composition Aaraaraanivide Naam (From “Pawssible“) was recorded in Vineeth Sreenivasan’s voice. His composition, Orio & Marigold was recorded in Abhay Jodhpurkar’s voice.

Kishkindha Kaandam – One among his best works as a background scorer. He also composed the single track of the movie

1. His experience in scoring music is only self-learning and through people he met. Like his grandfather and many members of his family, he never formally trained in music.

2. As a background scorer, his highest success rate is with thrillers.

3. He joined the crew of Kishkindha Kaandam only after the shooting of the movie was completed and 70% of editing done.

4. Though he was passionate about music since childhood, many times he drifted away from his passion. But for many reasons, his destiny conspired to bring him back to music.

5. During his school days, he was known as ‘Rahman Bhraanthan’.

6. He started experimenting with music when his cousin brought a computer. He wanted to study Audio Engineering after 10th. But his parents wanted him to complete Plus-2 first.

7. He, along with screenwriter Bahul Ramesh marked their film debut with Mandharam in 2018. It was a beginning of a great bond, and later the they collaborated with director Dinjith Ayyathan for their masterpiece works – Kishkindha Kaandam and Eko.
