*Coir – Film was made in the backdrop of the coir industry, which was once common in the backwaters of Kerala. Coir is made from coconut husk, which is abundant in Kerala, the state itself, which is known by the name of the coconut tree.
Chirayinkeezhu is a place belonging to the Thiruvanthapuram district, which was once a hub of the coir industry. There was a time when the whole region prospered because of the coir sector. But like many things of the glorious past, the traditional coir-making industry of Kerala collapsed and also lost its charm and glory. The movie – Kayalum Kayarum (1979) was made against the backdrop of the ruling coir industry in rural Kerala back then.
