Paikurumbiye Meykkum song from Gramaphone – Lyrics in English with Translation

Sunsuns nana sunsun sunsuns nana sunsun

Sunsuns nana sunsunanana sun

Sunsunanena sunsunanena sunsunanena

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Kaathunilkaathevidae poyaedi Kannan (M)

Hey kohl coloured girl,

Who is grazing the cow,

Without waiting for you,

Where has he gone, Kannan?

Hm hm hm Madhuvidhu kaalamallae

Madhuraiku poyathallae

Manimayil peeli rendum

Maranittu poyathallae (F)

It’s honeymoon season,

He has gone to Mathura.

Those two peacock feathers

He has forgotten to take

Naru vennilaavu polae nee virinju nilkayallae

Like white moonlight

You are standing, blossomed

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Kaathunilkaathevidae poyaedi Kannan (M)

Hey kohl coloured girl,

Who is grazing the cow,

Without waiting for you,

Where has he gone, Kannan?

Thathinakinu thathinakinnu thathinakinu thathinakinnu

Thathinakinu thathinakinnu thathinakinu thathinakinnu tha (Chorus)

Aatora kanni nilavil alivorumoru eerakuzhalil

Vari vandaay mooliyathaaranu ho oh oo (M)

On the river bank, in the moonlight

In the melting flute,

Who has hummed as a dark beetle?

Aatora kanni nilavil alivorumoru eerakuzhalil

Vari vandaay mooliyathaaranu (F)

On the river bank, in the moonlight

In the melting flute,

Who has hummed as a dark beetle?

Kallu vecha kammalin mel

Ummavechathum innale nin

Kaanthamani kaninayile

Kanaka vilakku koluthiyathum

Mayangunna naerathu maaril mellae chaariyathum

Manasintae manmuriyil

Madhura thoovenna ozhukkiyathum

Kandathaanu pennae kankavarnna pennae

Poovaninja raathrimullae o oo oooo

Hey girl, I have seen someone

Kissing the stone of your ear rings,

And lighting the golden lamp of your magnet eyes yesterday,

And slowly slanting on your bosom at sleeping time…

And churning sweet, white butter

From the earthen room of your heart.

Yes, I have seen

The girl who stole my eyes,

Hey blossomed night jasmine…..

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Kaathunilkaathevidae poyaedi Kannan (M)

Hey kohl coloured girl,

Who is grazing the cow,

Without waiting for you,

Where has he gone, Kannan?

Kannady kasaval moodum kaayambu kavilil mellae

Kadukolam nulliyathaaraanu ooooo oo (M)

In the Memecylon (Anjan) cheek,

Covered with mirror-like silk,

Who gently pinched you, mustard-like

Kannady kasaval moodum kaayambu kavilil mellae

Kadukolam nulliyathaaraanu (F)

In the Memecylon (Anjan) cheek,

Covered with mirror-like silk,

Who gently pinched you, mustard-like

Kolusaninja rakulirae o oo oooo

Hey girl, I have seen someone

Scattering the sandalwood honey

Of your red lip pairs,

And plucking *Makaram (month) grapes

Of your mist filled bosom(M)

And slowly coming near you yesterday

And telling something in ears,

And with gripes,

You hiding everything inside heart(F)

Yes, I have seen

The girl who stole my eyes,

Hey night chillness who wears anklets…

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Pai kurumbiyae meikum

Maikarumbiyam pennae

Good day. What does Kannady kasaval moodum mean? My surname is Kasaval, so I am very curious.

    • Sandy says:

      It’s an interesting question.
Kannady kasaval moodum is a line used in the song. Kannady means mirror or mirror-like(thin), Kasaval (pronounced as Kasavaal) can be split as ‘Kasav’ and ‘al/aal’ which means ‘Using silk/With silk’ and Moodum means ‘Will cover’. Kasav Sari in Malayalam means Silk Sari. So, this phrase means ‘To wrap with mirror-like silk’. Hope you got it
