500+ Top Bollywood Songs of Lata Mangeshkar with different composers in different decades
Lata Mangeshkar – the legend and great artist; the only artist from Bollywood to be honoured with nation’s highest honour Bharat Ratna, the leading female playback voice of Bollywood since late 1940s. We can add countless adjectives to her talent, singing abilities and dedication towards the field of Indian music. Yet we can’t find an apt word – that’s true. On her 90th birthday I was so happy that I left my lunch and evening tea and sat before computer to write one special article for her – my birthday gift. It took one complete day to finish it, but I was so happy then. It’s only a few days since then, and in that list I categorized her songs based on different heroines, particularly in the old era. Please have a look here. So it’s unbelievable for me with the most recent updates.
In this article, I shall try to list some of the best songs of Lata Mangeshkar belonging to different decades since 1940s, and I have also categorized songs of each decade under respective music composers. I have also noted Lata’s co-singer for all these songs. But I can’t assure I have not missed any of her great songs. It’s only my humble tribute to the singing icon, who is currently undergoing treatment in Mumbai, and as a die-hard fan I pray to almighty to heel her diseases as early as possible. We all wish for a speedy recovery of Lata Ji. She has become a part of our lives right from the day we are born, so are her songs. So she has become our habit, which we love to keep with ourselves from dawn till we sleep. We are extremely proud to live in the era where she also lives.
For the past few days I am fully distressed and feeling unhappy, and because of this I even left listening to her songs. I started hearing her voice once again after I came to know she is out of danger and slowly in recovery phase. Social media nowadays make me more upset than usual. I prepared this song list in haste and may have missed many good songs. So this list is only temporary and more songs may be added later. This list contains 500+ Lata Mangeshkar hit songs, Let me begin the list with prayers for Didi.
Lata Mangeshkar’s Bollywood songs in the decade of 1940s
Natali Chaitraachi Navalaai for Marathi movie Pahili Mangalaa-gaur in 1942 was her first released song. She also played a small role in the film. In 1943 she recorded her first Hindi song, “Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu” for the Marathi film Gajaabhaau. She reached Mumbai in 1945, after which she embarked on a new journey no one would have ever imagined to reach such a glorious destination. In those days singing actresses were high in demand, and the technique of playback singing had just come to exist.
Initially her voice was rejected by many music composers for being too thin, and as a playback singer she received major break through the haunting melody composed by Khemchand Prakash – ‘Aayega Aanewala’ from Mahal, filmed on Madhubala. With the songs of Barsaat composed by debutants – Shankar Jaikishen in 1949, she shot to instant fame. As a playback singer there was no turning back and she conquered new heights. SJ went on to record countless hit songs with Lata, and other leading composers like S. D. Burman, Naushad and Madan Mohan also specially reserved songs for her. As there are only a few memorable Lata songs in the 1940s, I simply clubbed them together.

Lata Mangeshkar’s Bollywood songs in the decade of 1960s
Her voice was frequently used by composers for Sadhana and Mala Sinha, followed by Asha Parekh, Sharmila Tagore etc. She also sang for Vyjayanthimala, Nutan etc who had a glorious period in the 1960s. Though she recorded several iconic songs with Shankar-Jaikishen, 1960s is best remembered for her combo songs with Madan Mohan, which began in the late 1950s. Read in detail here. It is equally significant to SJ-Rafi combo songs of decade, if we look back now, though total songs are comparatively low. Except O. P. Nayyar, all leading composers recorded her songs for movies.
In the mid-1960s she didn’t record songs with Rafi, and most of her songs released during this period were solos. Definitely 1960s is the most glorious decade of Lata Mangeshkar’s career and my personal favourite too. Here I list 180+ Lata songs of the decade. It’s a quick list. If I take some time, more songs may be added.

Lata Mangeshkar’s Bollywood songs in the decade of 1970s
Apart from solos, she recorded numerous duets with Kishore Kumar and also Mohammed Rafi in the 1970s, mostly composed by Kalyanji-Anandji, R. D. Burman and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Though their association began in the 1960s, it reached full swing in the 1970s. Till late 1960s, she held the supremacy of best female voice of Bollywood. With early 1970s, she shared it with younger sister Asha Bhosle, and Mangeshkar sisters went on to fully dominate Bollywood scene in the 1970s and 1980s. While Lata preferred soft and classical based songs most, Asha Bhosle tried with every genre of Bollywood music, and mostly succeeded in fast numbers. In the1970s, she rendered her voice for established actresses like Sharmila Tagore, and also newcomers like Zeenat Aman, Shabana Azmi, Yogeeta Bali etc. This list also contains around 175 songs.

List of Bollywood songs of Lata Mangeshkar in the decade of 2000s
With the new millennium she reduced her work significantly. Her major work in the past two decades is the full-length album for Veera Zara, where unused tunes composed by Madan Mohan were used. It was her last full-length album in Bollywood. She also worked with A. R. Rahman for a few filmy albums. As there are only a few memorable songs in the decade I shall list them together. She hasn’t recorded any memorable song in the past one decade or so, surprisingly true. Yet I never missed her. That’s the life of her songs which she recorded in the recent past.
- Tere Liye from Veer Zaara – Music Composer: Madan Mohan (Co-singer: Roop Kumar Rathod)
- Do Pal Ruka from Veer Zaara – Music Composer: Madan Mohan (Co-singer: Sonu Nigam)
- Ek Tu Hi Bharosa from Pukar – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman (Solo)
- Khamoshiyan Gunguna from 1 2 Ka 4 – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman (Co-singer: Sonu Nigam)
- So Gaye Hain from Zubeidaa – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman (Solo)
- Lukka Chuppi from Rang De Basanti – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman (Solo)
- O Paalanhaare from Lagaan – Music Composer: A. R. Rahman (Solo)
- Humko Humise Chura Lo from Mohabbatein – Music Composer: Jatin Lalit Co-singers: Udit Narayan
- Title track of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham – Music Composer: Jatin Lalit (Solo)
- Andekhi Anjani Se from Mujhse Dosti Karoge – Music Composer: Rahul Sharma Co-singers: Udit Narayan
- Jaane Dil Mein Kab Se Hai Tu from Mujhse Dosti Karoge – Music Composer: Rahul Sharma (Co-singer: Sonu Nigam)
- Shayad Yahi To Pyar Hai from Lucky: No Time for Love – Music Composer: Adnan Sami (Co-singer: Adnan Sami)
There is one special patriotic song which is not a part of the above list – E Mere Watan Ke Logon. Her achievements and popularity across the globe is immensely huge and it will always remain so. I am sure I have missed many of her hit songs. After all it’s not an easy task to pick each and every memorable track of Lata, and personal choices also vary. Please let me know if you come across any such song which deserves mention in this list. Here I conclude my post, praying for her speedy recovery. Lata Ji, Get well soon.
