Top 100 Malayalam film songs of K. S. Chithra

One and only K. S. Chithra, or simply Chithra – the most versatile and popular voice of Malayalam cinema. Nicknamed as Nightingale of South India, she owns a huge fan base across South India, and established her career in all the 4 south Indian languages and also Hindi. Joined film industry in the early 1980s, in a career spanning to nearly 4 decades, she has rendered her voice to majority of popular songs of Malayalam in the 1980s, 1990s till late 2000s. She fully dominated south Indian film industry in the 1990s, and also owns many hit songs to her credit in Hindi, Bengali and many other regional languages.

If I am asked, can you list 10, 50 or 100 best Malayalam songs of Chithra’s career, it’s next to impossible, because her voice is so sweet, melodious and magical that we can’t count any of her songs as bad renditions. In my opinion, after Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, Chithra is the most versatile and successful female playback voice of Indian cinema. She holds the record of highest number of National awards for best playback singer.

In this post, I have added around 250 best Malayalam songs recorded by Chithra, which includes both solos and duets. Needless to say, number of solos far exceeds her duets. Not just the case of Chithra, in the case of any other playback singer too, the career best songs of an artist always have more solos than duets, because he/she expresses best while singing single. Here is my selection of top 100 Malayalam film songs of Chithra, and I have also listed around 250 more songs beneath this. It took a lot of efforts to filter 100 of her best songs, not an easy task you know. In the listed song list below too, I own many personal favourites. Hope you would like it. Top 100 Malayalam hit songs of Chithra

1. Rajani Parayu from Njaan Ekanaanu (1982) – Lyricist: Sathyan Anthikad, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Solo

Let us begin the list with Chithra’s first hit film – Njaan Ekanaanu. The movie included two hit songs of Chithra, Rajani Parayu – a sad solo filmed on Poornima Jayaram and Pranayavasantham – a happy duet with K. J. Yesudas. Both the songs were popular, alongside Yesudas’ solo – O Mridule. She was introduced to music scene by M. G. Radhakrishnan through a few album songs in 1979 and gave her early film break through Njaan Ekanaanu. There was no turning back.

Chithra’s voice was entirely different from ruling queens of Malayalam cinema like Susheela and Janaky, and much younger too. By that time peak time of legendary singers have already reached its maximum height, and Chithra slowly replaced their position as the ghost voice of not just Malayalam heroines, but also for rest three languages. By the early 1990s, she became the top female voice of south Indian cinema, and stayed there for more than a decade.

2. Aalolam Chaanchaadum from Aduthaduthu (1984) – Lyricist: Sathyan Anthikkad, Music Composer: Raveendran , Solo

I couldn’t find original video of this song. Yet it’s one of my most favourite Chithra songs ever. So I included this particular song in my list of best 100 Malayalam songs of Chithra.

3. Aayiram Kannumaay from Nokketha Dhoorathu Kannum Nattu (1984) – Lyricist: Bichu Thirumala, Music Composer: Jerry Amaldev,  Solo

The movie marked the acting debut of Nadhiya Moidu, and actress Padmini also made a comeback through this film. The song had more than one versions recorded in the voices of Chithra and Yesudas, and both the actresses appeared in them. The movie also included one popular Christian devotional song, Aradhana (Laathiri Poothiri) recorded in the voices of Yesudas and Chithra, and Chithra solo – Kilye Kiliye.

The song gave Chithra her first ever state award for best playback singer. She won state award for year 1984 for the songs, Ore Swaram from Ente Kaanakkuyil, Poomaaname from Nirakkoottu and Aayiram Kannumaay from Nokketha Dhoorathu Kannum Nattu. She went on to win 15 more awards, highest among female singers.

4. Poomaaname from Nirakkoottu (1985) – Lyricist: Poovachal Khader, Music Composer: Shyam,  Solo

The lovely song filmed on Mammootty and Sumalatha was an instant hit, and still popular among reality singing competitions on television. As told above the song bagged her first ever playback singer award of her career, which was just a beginning to her illustrious and record breaking career. She created a unique record of winning state awards consecutively for 11 years during the period, 1985-1995.

5. Kudajadriyil Kudi Kollum from Neela Kadamb (1985) – Lyricist: K Jayakumar, Music Composer: Raveendran , Solo

The movie is yet to hit theatres. But the song released long back in the 1980s in Chithra’s voice became immensely popular. Hope this film would get released in theatres someday.

6. Manjal Prasadavum from Nakhashathangal (1986) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Bombay Ravi, Solo

Nakhashathangal is popular both for its script as well as evergreen songs recorded in the voices of Chithra, Yesudas and Jayachandran. This particular song filmed on Monisha and Vineeth won Chithra her first ever National awards for best playback singer, and also second state award. Monisha received National award for best actress, the youngest winner at the age of 15 one year after movie release. It was Monisha’s debut film in her very short yet glorious film journey.

7. Ariyathe Ennile Ennil Nee from Oru Katha Oru Nunakatha (1986) – Lyricist: M. D. Rajendran, Music Composer: Johnson,  Solo

The song was filmed on Pavithra, a less-known actress, where she is seen singing the song to a group of friends, Nedumudi Venu, Shaari and Mammootty. Mammootty is seen rendering a few lines in the opening of the song, and I believe it to be Johnson’s voice. No doubt it’s one of the finest songs of Chithra’s career.

8. Ponveene Ennullil from Thalavattam (1986) – Lyricist: Poovachal Khader , Music Composer:  Reghu Kumar, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar/Solo

During my early childhood Thalavattam was my most favourite film, and Ponveene, my favourite film. I got easily attached with the deep emotions associated with the movie as well as this particular song. The song had two versions, a happy duet where Lissy appears as a performer aside Mohanlal, and a solo version towards the climax when Karthika recites the song for Mohanlal.

9. Poo Veeno Pooveeno from Deshadanakili Karayaarilla (1986) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer:  Raveendran , Solo

One of the early Indian films which dealt with the theme of womance this Padmarajan movie starred Karthika and Shari in lead roles, alongside Mohanlal. The song is all about romance of Mohanlal and Karthika.

10. Vaathil Pazhuthiloode from Idanazhiyiloru Kaalocha (1987) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: V. Dakshinamoorthy,  Solo

My most favourite Malayalam song ever, Vaathil Pazhuthiloode is very close to my heart, may be the ‘Sandhya’ factor creating the magic. Though it’s best known as an evergreen classic of Yesudas, the song was recorded in Chithra’s version too. Karthika sings the opening lines (Mukda) to Vineeth during the climax scene of the film; only these few lines appear in Chithra’s voice throughout in the movie. The movie also marked the comeback of V. Dakshinamoorthy after a few years.

11. Iru Hridayangalum from Oru Maymaasa Pulariyil (1987) – Lyricist: P. Bhaskaran, Music Composer: Raveendran, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

Chithra sings only a few lines towards the end of the song, sync-lipped by Shaari. Yet these few lines lift the song to a new level. Ashokan who plays a cricket star in the film was also featured in the song.

12. Pularkaala Sundara from Oru Maymaasa Pulariyil (1987) – Lyricist: P. Bhaskaran, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

This song filmed on Shaari is always counted among the top 10 songs of Chithra songs ever, and one of the best Malayalam songs of dreams at wee hours. The song also bagged her state awards.

13. Nettiyil Poovulla from Manivathoorile Aayiram Sivarathrikal (1987) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: M. B. Sreenivasan, Solo

The song was filmed on Suhasini, and Mammootty appears as a listener to her singing, without her knowledge. The song also had a version recorded in the voice of Yesudas.

14. Vaisakha Sandhye from Nadodikaattu (1987) – Lyricist: Yusufali Kechery, Music Composer: Shyam, Solo

The song had two solo versions in the voices of Chithra and Yesudas, and both the versions became instant hit. The song was filmed on Shobana and Mohanlal, and the movie earned a cult classic status among audiences.

15. Pudamurikkalyanam from Chilamb (1987) – Lyricist: Bharathan, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Solo

The song, all about marriage dreams was filmed on Shobana. In the 1980s, Shobhana frequently worked with actor Rehman, and Chilamb is one such. The duo also worked together in many movies, aside Mammootty long back in the 1980s.

16. Indraneelimayolum from Vaishali (1988) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Bombay Ravi, Solo

Vaishali is one of the milestone movies in the career of Chithra. All the songs are memorable and regarded as evergreen classics. Indraneelimayolum filmed on Suparna Anand and Sanjay Mitra (who later married and separated) is widely regarded as one among the most sizzling songs of Malayalam screen ever. ONV Kurup earned his single national award for penning lyrics of Vaishali.

17. Indupushpam from Vaishali (1988) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Bombay Ravi, Solo

The song bagged both state awards and national awards for Chithra. The song was filmed on Geetha and Suparna Anand who played screen mother and daughter for Vaishali, though they have only a small age gap of 7 years in real life. “Theduvathethoru Devapadam” is yet another popular solo of Chithra from the film.

18. Thirunellikkadu Poothu from Dhinarathrangal (1988) – Lyricist: Shibu Chakravarthy, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar

The song was filmed on Mukesh and Parvathy, and was noted for unique filming on an ‘Erumadam’. Its tune pattern composed by Ouseppachan is also unique.

19. Olichirikkaan from Aaranyakam (1988) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Raghunath Seth, Solo

This particular song is the hot favourite of kids of 1980s. Actress who appears in this song, Saleema was earlier seen in Nakhakshatangal.

20. Kannaam Thumpee from Kakkothikkavile Appooppan Thaadikal (1988) – Lyricist: Bichu Thirumala, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Solo

Yet another nostalgic song for kids of 1980s, the song was filmed on Kaveri and Raasi, who played younger versions of Ambika and Revathi in the movie. The highlight of the song is “Milkweed” or Appoppan Thadi, every kid’s favourite of all time.

21. Raapadi Than from Daisy (1988) – Lyricist: P. Bhaskaran, Music Composer: Shyam, Solo

Sonia appears as a stage singer for this sing, alongside a group of friends, while her arch envy Harish Kumar tries to prank her with the help of some local explosives, during cultural events at the boarding school. All its tracks were extremely popular those days, especially the title track sung by Yesudas. Pookkale Pulinangale is yet another Chithra soft solo from the album.

22. Kalari Vilakk from Oru Vadakkan Veeeragaatha (1989) – Lyricist: K. Jayakumar, Music Composer:  Bombay Ravi, Solo

Chithra received state awards for the rendition of this song, lip synced by Geetha. Oru Vadakkan Veeeragaatha was one of the biggest hits of Malayalam cinema, based on the theme of ‘Vadakkan Paattukal’ of Malabar.

23. Thanka Thoni from Mazhavil Kaavadi (1989) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

The song filmed on Urvasi and Jayaram was a huge chartbuster when got released three decades back and still popular. This particular song, alongside Kalari Vilakk from Oru Vadakkan Veeeragaatha earned Chithra her state awards.

24. Puzhayorathu Poothoni from Adharvam (1989) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja, Solo

This sizzling track was filmed on Silk Smitha, who is seen dancing in this song in traditional attire. A group of friends on a trip also appears in the song filming. Mammootty is seen as a yogi in the song, in a very few shots.

25. Shyama Megame Ne from Adhipan (1989) – Lyricist: Chunakkara Ramankutty, Music Composer: Shyam, Solo

It’s definitely one of the career best songs of Chithra, worth hearing a thousand times. Purely based on Carnatic music, extremely talented Chithra took the song to a new level when she sang it with ease. The song was filmed on Parvathy, and Mohanlal also appears in the song. Needless to say only an expert can sing this song perfectly and hit the right notes without flaws. Hats off to Chithra, she is definitely a master!!

26. Mandaara Cheppundo from Dasharatham (1989) – Lyricist: Poovachal Khader, Music Composer: Johnson, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar

Dasaratham was one of the early Indian movies based on the theme of surrogacy and artificial insemination, that too long back in the late 1980s. I think it’s the first Indian movie based on the theme of artificial insemination (correct me if I am wrong). Hats off the director Sibi Malayil for handling such a delicate subject way back in the 1980s, when surrogacy and artificial insemination were not too familiar terms to Indian society and social life! This song was filmed on Mohanlal, Rekha, Murali and Sukumari, who played pivot roles in the film.

27. Akashadeepam Ennum Unarum from Kshanakathu (1990) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Sharreth, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

This romantic movie had a tragic end. This extremely popular romantic song was filmed on less-known actors, Niyaz Musaliyar and Parvathy.

28. Gopika Vasantham from His Highness Abdullah (1990) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Raveendran , Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

This evergreen romantic track was filmed on Mohanlal and Gauthami, who played a romantic pair in the film. All the songs based on Carnatic ragas became extremely popular, and this particular song was based on Shanmukhapriya raga. The album included 6 tracks, and Gopika Vasantham is the single Chithra track.

29. Kannaadikkayyil from Pavam Pavam Rajakumaran (1990) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

This soft solo was filmed on Rekha and Sreenivasan. The movie directed by Kamal was a box office hit, and had a surprising climax with a positive twist.

30. Thumpi Nin Moham from Neelagiri  (1991) – Lyricist: P. K. Gopi , Music Composer: M. M. Keeravani, Solo

The movie starring Mammootty and Madhoo was a box office flop. But the songs became extremely popular. In this particular song, Mammootty plays violin and Madhoo sings for her birthday party, celebrated with a group of kids and relatives. Kilipaadumetho/Karukayaamam is yet another popular song from the album, recorded both in the voices of Yesudas and Chithra. 

31. Oru Janmamaam Ushasandhyayaay from Sundarikkaakka  (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram & Pradeep Ashtamichira, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

The song is all about the search for an unknown lover. Rekha plays a beauty queen in the movie with a lot of admirers, while she is in search of a special person who secretly loves her.

32. Swarakanyakamaar from Santhwanam (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Mohan Sithara, Solo

Yet another song filmed on actress Rekha, the movie included just two tracks. The second song, Unni Vavavo recorded in the voices of both Chithra and Yesudas as solo versions was more popular than this sad song. However my choice for best song of the album goes to Swarakanyakamaar, where Rekha appears as a performer with Veena. This particular song, alongside Thaaram Vaalkannadi from Keli gave state award to Chithra for the year 1991.

33. Pala Poove from Njan Gandharvan (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

Definitely one of the finest songs of Chithra ever, the song was filmed on Suparna Anand and Nitish Bharadwaj. The song was based on Madhuradhwani raga. There are two more evergreen songs in the album, recorded in the voice of Yesudas – Devi Athmaragami and Devanganangal. This song alongside Kannil Nin Meyyil from Innale gave state awards to Chithra for the year 1990. I am a bit confused as Wikipedia suggests Njan Gandharvan, Santhwanam and Keli had theatre release in 1991, while Innale had a theatre release in 1990. But those films were awarded different years.

34. Kannil Nin Meyyil from Innale (1990) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Perumbavoor G. Raveendranath, Solo

I would like to classify Innale alongside movies released in 1991, to avoid confusions about state awards. This evergreen song was filmed on Shobana, Jayaram and Sridevi. Mist adds extra beauty to this song, just as the mystery behind Shobana’s true identity in the film.

35. Thaaram Vaalkannadi from Keli (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Bharathan, Solo

The song was filmed on Jayaram and Charmila. Jayaram played a physically disabled person in the movie. The song was awarded state awards for best playback singing (female) alongside Swara Kanyakamar from the movie, Santhwanam released in 1992.

36. Hey Krishna from Kizhakkunarum Pakshi (1991) – Lyricist: K. Jayakumar, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

Actress Rekha was enjoying career peak in the early 1990s, and Kizhakkunarum Pakshi was one of her memorable roles. Her screen chemistry with Mohanlal was well received too. She plays a professional singer in the film, and is seen recording a song in the video of this particular song. The song was tuned based on Charukesi raga.

37. Paathira Mazhayetho from Ulladakkam (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar

This soulful melody is enough to bring tears to our eyes. Artists like Amala, Mohanlal, Ashokan and Sukumari appears in the song.

38. Meena Venalil from Kilukkam (1991) – Lyricist: Bichu Thirumala, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar

The song was filmed on Mohanlal, Revathy and Thilakan, and the movie was a comedy blockbuster.

39. Cheera Poovukalkk from Dhanam (1991) – Lyricist: P. K. Gopi, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

Charmila lip-syncs to this melodious track recorded in the voice of Chithra. Mohanlal also appears in the song. The song was based on Yamuna Kalyani raga.

40. Etho Vaarmukilin from Pookalam Varavayi (1991) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Solo

This lullaby is the hot favourite of kids of 1990s, and it’s one of the best Malayalam lullabies ever. The song was filmed on Baby Shamli, Rekha and Jayaram.

41. Kanaka Nilave from Kauravar (1992) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

The song was a huge chartbuster when it got released. It starred Mammootty and Anju, who played a wedded couple with short span of being together. Anju has appeared as a child artist in Mammootty movies in the 1980s.

42. Maunasarovaram from Savidham (1992) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

Chithra received state awards for best playback singer for this song. Maathu is seen recording a song in this song sequence, and Nedumudi Venu and Shanti Krishna also appear in the song.

43. Rajahamsame from Chamayan (1992) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Johnson, Solo

One of the most popular songs of Chithra ever, this particular song is the hot favourite for aspiring singers for different singing competitions and reality shows. In fact a housewife Chandralekha also shot to instant fame after a recording of this song went viral over net. Original song was filmed on Sithara who appears as a stage actress, performing this song on stage. Manoj K. Jayan plays Sithara’s lover in this particular song. Chithra earned a state award for its rendition, alongside the songs of Ponmeghame of Sopanam and Sangeethame of Ghazal.

44. Ambalappuzhe from Adhwaytham (1992) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Co-Singer: M. G. Sreekumar

Music composers of 1990s predominantly used traditional musical instruments such as veena, flute, idaykka, madhalam, flute etc and rarely used western instruments like electric guitar. Needless to say those songs are extremely popular even now, and always give a ‘Kerala’ feel. Ambalappuzhe is one such instance. The song was filmed on Jayaram and less known actress Soumya, who faded away from silver screen. Ambalappuzhe is perhaps the most popular song of M. G. Sreekumar, composed by his elder brother.

45. Mounam Swaramaay from Aayushkalam (1992) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

The song had two versions – a solo version in the voice of Yesudas, and a duet version. The duet version was filmed on Jayaram and Maathu, shown as a newly wedded couple.

46. Arivin Nilave from Rajashilpi (1992) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

Bhanupriya appears as a beautiful dancer in front of Mohanlal who plays a sage in the movie. She tries to impress him with her beautiful moves. Clearly the movie is a retelling of the story of Lord Shiva, Sati and her incarnation Parvathy, with a few modifications.

47. Ambilikala Choodum from Rajashilpi (1992) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

Yet another popular song from the movie, Bhanupriya performs as a traditional classical dancer in this song sequence.

48. Njaattuvela Kiliye from Mithunam (1993) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Solo

Nature’s beauty at its best, this beautiful song was filmed on Urvasi. I wonder where such beautiful Malayalam songs have gone, which stay close to nature, Kerala’s water resources and Malayalis’ lives. Definitely 1990s was a golden era of Malayalam film music, which will never return back.

49. Karukavayal Kuruvi from Dhruvam (1993) – Lyricist: Shibu Chakravarthy, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Solo

Yet another song that can be tagged in the above category, Karukavayal Kuruvi was filmed on Mammootty and Gautam. The song shows a sequence of events, soon after they got engaged.

50. Pathu Veluppinu Muttathu Nikkana from Venkalam (1993) – Lyricist: P. Bhaskaran, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

The song shows the marriage ceremony of Murali and Urvasi and following events. K. P. A. C. Lalitha and Manoj K. Jayan also appear in the song. It briefly sketches the life of sculptors who work on brass.

51. Oru Murai Vanthu from Manichitrathaazhu (1993) – Lyricist: Bichu Thirumala & Vaali, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

Both the movie and its songs were immensely popular when it got released. Shobana exhibits her dancing skills through this song, and Shridhar, Suresh Gopi and Mohanlal also appear in the song sequence filmed at famous Padmanabhapuram Palace, Thakkalai, and also Hill Palace, Tripunithura. The song included Tamil lyrics too. When the movie was remade to Tamil and Hindi, those songs too became extremely popular. Telugu and Bengali lyrics were added to the respective songs for authenticity.

52. Varuvaanillaarumee from Manichitrathaazhu (1993) – Lyricist: Madhu Muttam, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Solo

This poetry version was filmed on Sobhana, who bagged state and National film awards for best actress for her performance in dual roles. The song provides a few glimpses of her past life.

53. Neelanjana Poovin from Paithrukam (1993) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Solo

This particular song was originally recorded in the voice of Bombay Jayshree (of ‘Vaseegara’ fame) and filmed on Geetha. Later Chithra’s version was recorded and released as cassette, but never used for the film. But this version became more popular. S. P. Venkatesh won Filmfare Award for Best Music Director – Malayalam for its music tracks.

54. Onnuriyadan Kothiyaayi from Soubhagyam (1993) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Solo

The song was filmed on Sunitha and Jagdeesh, alongside the supporting cast. Preparations of marriage and wedding ceremony are filmed in this song. The song very much has a 1990s feel, of course the way marriage ceremonies were celebrated those days.

55. Ponmeghame Shalabhangale from Sopanam (1994) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: S. P. Venkatesh, Solo

The song is fully lighted with lamps and lovely filmed on Chippy. It appears more as a Kerala traditional song filmed in a temple and old Tharavadu. Symbols of traditionally rich Kerala swings, Kerala lamps, interior of Kerala home etc appear in the song as characters. Wikipedia suggests Chithra earned state award for the songs – Ponmeghame from Sopanam, Rajahamsame from Rajasilpi and Sangeetame from Ghazal for the year 1993.

This highly acclaimed women-centric film, based on old Kerala traditions had Mohini playing the central character of upper caste girl. The song depicts customs related to puberty of a teenager girl in a Brahmin family.

This lovely song was filmed on Vindhuja Menon and Jagdish, who played a romantic couple in the film.

The movie with an anti-climax was a huge hit, and so are its songs. Almost all songs of the movie were filmed on Mohanlal and Shobana. Chinkarakinnaram and Thaliraninjoru look like two versions of the same song.

59. Enthinu Veroru Sooryodayam from Mazhayettum Mumpe (1995) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Raveendran, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

One of the finest and extremely popular duets of Yesudas and Chithra, the song was filmed on Mammooty and Shobana, who makes a perfect couple on screen. Shobana played a paralyzed girl in the movie.

60. Maaleyam Marodalinju from Thacholi Varghese Chekavar (1995) – Lyricist: Gireesh Puthenchery, Music Composer: Sharreth, Solo

This slow paced romantic song was filmed on Mohanlal and Nirosha. It seems the entire song was filmed in slow motion.

61. Sashikala Chaarthiya from Devaragam (1996) – Lyricist: M. D. Rajendran, Music Composer: M. M. Keeravani, Solo

The movie is all about beautiful and extremely melodious tunes composed by Keeravani, Sridevi’s beauty face and Chithra’s voice. The state award winning song was filmed on Sridevi who celebrates auspicious Karthika festival with lighted lamps and dance steps, and the song also includes the intro scene of Aravind Swamy’s character, who watches his heroine for the first time.

62. Sisirakala from Devaragam (1996) – Lyricist: M. D. Rajendran, Music Composer: M. M. Keeravani, Co-singer: P. Jayachandran

It was one of the early duets of P. Jayachandran with Chithra after his glorious comeback in the second half of 1990s. After that he recorded a series of hit duets with Chithra, composed by Vidya Sagar, Uttam Singh, M Jayachandran, Ramesh Narayan, Alphonse Joseph etc. “Sisirakaala Meghamidhuna” is the most popular track of the album, filmed on Arvind Swami and Sridevi. Though they have a good age gap of 7 years, it doesn’t show on the screen. M. M. Kreem’s compositions, Chithra’s sweet voice and amazing screen chemistry of both played a great part.

63. Ya Ya Ya from Devaragam (1996) – Lyricist: M. D. Rajendran, Music Composer: M. M. Keeravani, Co-Singer: P. Unnikrishnan

The movie included one more popular romantic track featuring the lead pair, and in this song, Arvind Swami and Sridevi appear as romantic pair Krishna and Radha on screen. Chithra also rendered her voice for “Thaazhampoo” song filmed on Sridevi, in the situation of her character’s marriage.

64. Maarikoodinnullil from Kaalapani (1996) – Lyricist: Gireesh Puthenchery, Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja, Solo

The composer also rendered his voice for a few lines in the song, just before second Antara. Yet I would prefer to call it as a solo track of Chithra, filmed on Tabu. The movie also included the popular, “Attarambile Kombile”, a duet of Chithra and M. G. Sreekumar, filmed on Tabu and Mohanlal.

The song was filmed on Jayaram, Manju Warrier and Sukanya. Thooval Kottaram was a love triangle with a happy and surprising end.

As the title of the film suggests, the movie is all about colours of love and youth, and this musical campus film and its songs were huge chartbusters. This song is widely regarded as one of the finest songs filmed on Manju Warrier, and was filmed as a dream sequence. Suresh Gopi also appears in her dreams which is all above love and dreams.

Yet another extremely popular song of Chithra from the film, this song appears in the opening credits and was filmed on Divya Unni, who plays parallel lead in the film aside Manju Warrier.

Chithra remained the ghost voice of Manju Warrier for majority of her hit song tracks during her first innings. This popular solo also belongs to the same list. Sallapam, Pranaya Varnangal, Summer in Bethlehem, Kannezhuthi Poottum Thottu etc are a few more memorable works.

The song was filmed on Ranjitha, who shares her dreams through its lyrics. Mohanlal and Sukanya also appear in the song. I think songs of 1990s have a special feel, closely linked to the farming culture and traditional values. Now this distinct Kerala culture is fading from Malayalam movies, with the advance of technology. Orchestra has also changed very much.

As told above, songs of 1990s have a special feel, which Malayalis can easily connect, and this particular song filmed on Shalini and Dileep also belongs to the same category.

78. Thumpayum Thulasiyum from Megham (1999) – Lyricist: Gireesh Puthenchery, Music Composer: Ouseppachan, Solo

One of the finest Malayalam songs based on the theme of natural beauty and greenery of God’s own country, the song featured Bollywood actress Priya Gill in her very first Malayalam film. Though the movie flopped, all its songs got noticed. In the 1990s, it was quite common in Mollywood to film a song on lead actress, where she appears in a traditional skirt or sari in the backdrop of village beauty, without background dancers, singing and dancing, and sharing her dreams with audience. In most cases, Chithra used to be ghost singer for such songs. Those days have gone!

79. Sivadham from Mazhavillu (1999) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Mohan Sitara, Co-Singer:  K. J. Yesudas

This Carnatic song was filmed on Vineeth, Kunchakko Boban and Preeti Jhangiani, and still very popular. The movie also included soft and melodious duet, Raavin Nilakkayal filmed on Vineeth and his lost love Praveena. Chithra sings only a very few opening lines of the song and hence it’s better considered as Yesudas solo. That’s the only reason why I excluded the song from the list, though Chithra sings it perfectly. 

80. Mathi Mounam Veene from Prem Poojari (1999) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup, Music Composer: Uttam Singh, Solo

The song was filmed on Shalini and Kunchakko Boban, who made a great pair on Malayalam screen in the second half of 1990s. Music was composed by Uttam Singh, music composer and arranger of Bollywood, best known for the work of ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’.

81. Puthumazhayayi from Akashaganga (1999) – Lyricist: S. Ramesan Nair, Music Composer: Berny-Ignatious, Solo

The song was filmed on Mayuri who played a soul in the movie. This haunting song of Chithra had a new version in the sequel of the horror comedy released 2 decades later.

82. Ente Thenkaasi from Thenkasipattanam (2000) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Suresh Peters, Co-Singers: Suresh Peters, M. G. Sreekumar

Chithra renders her voice for Samyukta Varma in this song filmed in a comic mood. Suresh Peters renders his voice for Dileep, while M. G. Sreekumar sings for Suresh Gopi towards the end of the song. Suresh Peters also recorded a solo version of this song in Chithra’s voice. The tune was reused for its Tamil remake, and Chithra rendered her voice once again.

The song was filmed on Samyukta Menon, Biju Menon and Lal and was extremely popular those days. The song also shares some glimpses of lost dreams and lost love. The song was filmed on the splendid beauty of backwaters and houseboats, and its lyrics are so amazing.

84. Kaatte Nee Veesaruthippol from Kattu Vannu Vilichappol  (2000) – Lyricist: O. N. V. Kurup &  Thirunalloor Karunakaran, Music Composer: M. G. Radhakrishnan, Solo

An old traditional song originally written by Thirunalloor Karunakaran, the song filmed on Chippy and Krishnakumar became extremely popular when got released, and still popular. This particular song was also filmed on the splendid beauty of backwaters and houseboats of Kerala.

85. Kodamanjin Thaazhvarayil from Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal (2000) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Ilaiyaraaja, Co-Singer: K. J. Yesudas

The song was filmed on the splendid beauty of the hill station of Ooty. The movie starring Jayaram and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam for the millennium year. Music maestro Ilaiyaraaja recorded three versions of this song – a duet of K. J. Yesudas and Chithra and their solo versions. Among all, duet version became extremely popular.

Nandanam is the finest works of Chithra in the new millennium, and she recorded all songs for Navya Nair in this movie. Navya Nair had just entered films, and Prithviraj marked his debut through Nandanam. Almost all supporting actors alongside Navya and Prithviraj appeared in this song, and this devotional Krishna song is really touching. Chithra bagged state award for this song.

93. Mauliyil Mayilpeeli Charthi from Nandanam (2002) – Lyricist: Gireesh Puthenchery, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo

This song dedicated to Lord Krishna is mostly seen as a devotional song than a filmy song and was filmed in a happy mood on Navya.

94. Kannil Nilavu from Chronic Bachelor (2002) – Lyricist: Kaithapram Damodaran, Music Composer: Deepak Dev, Solo

The movie marked the debut of Deepak Dev as a composer in Malayalam, and hence the first work together. It’s the single Chithra track in the entire album. This fast track number was filmed on Rambha.

100. Kalabham Tharaam from Vadakkumnathan (2006) – Lyricist: Gireesh Puthenchery, Music Composer: Raveendran, Solo/Co-singer: Biju Narayan

I would like to end this list with one of the finest songs of Chithra’s career, which gave her the prestigious Filmfare awards. The song became immensely popular long before film’s release. I once heard that the first version of the song pictured was not used for the song. Even the composer and filmmakers didn’t expect the overwhelming response of the song months before film’s release, and to meet with viewers’ expectations, the song was reshot. I am not sure if the rumour is true. But when the song hit musical charts, everyone believed it to be a devotional song dedicated to Lord Krishna, and when it came out, it became a romantic duet filmed on Vineeth and Kavya Madhavan, who earlier shared screen space for Perumazhakalam. The filmy version was a duet version, while the most popular solo version of Chithra was not used for the movie.

It’s almost 15 years since (now in 2020) since songs of Vadakkumnathan got released in 2005. Sad part is that I couldn’t find even a single song of Chithra which could fit into this list of 100 best songs. Raveendran unexpectedly left us a few months after the movie’s release, and definitely Vadakkumnathan is his true masterpiece. It also marked an end to an iconic duo. Gireesh Puthenchery too passed away towards the end of the decade, marking an end of glorious & melodious era of Malayalam filmy music.

Her peak years have gone. Yet for more than 25 years she fully dominated Malayalam filmy music, and gave so much to us to cherish forever. Thank You Chithra Chechi, for whatever you give. In 2019 she sang for the revived version of ‘Puthumazhayay’ song of Akasha Ganga 2. Waiting for some good and melodious songs.
