Subi Suresh – Stand-up comedian of Malayalam entertainment industry

Subi Suresh was a stand-up comedian and actress associated with Malayalam entertainment industry. She gained recognition through mimicry and mono-acts, and was one of the popular female faces of Malayalam small screen. Mostly popular for her shows as an anchor, she has also played several supporting roles on screen. She shot to fame after anchoring the star kid show – ‘Kutty Pattalam’, aired on Surya TV. As an anchor, ‘Cinemala’ on Asianet channel was her first work. She passed away on 22nd February 2023 at the age of 42. She was suffering from liver related ailments. She was unmarried.

Subi Suresh came to limelight through her performances for Cochin Kalabhavan

Subi Suresh hailed from Thrippunithura, of Ernakulam. She schooled from Thrippunithura government school and continued studies at St. Terasa’s College, Ernakulam. During her childhood days she was enrolled for dance classes as normal kids. But very soon her parents realized that her real passion is western dance. Later she was enrolled at Kalabhavan, known for stage shows, where she got exposed to break dance forms, along with mimicry performances. She performed both on stage. She entered the scene when this profession was fully dominated by males.

One day she got opportunity to perform in an episode for ‘Cinemala’ on Asianet channel, a spoof show on Malayalam films. Very soon she bagged the opportunity to co-host the show aside noted artist Tini Tom, which successfully ran for many years. She was the first female member to join the ‘Cinemala’ group back then.

Her interaction with kids through ‘Kutty Pattalam’ made her a star anchor of small screen

She was not the first anchor to present the show, ‘Kutty Pattalam’. As she didn’t own any kind of experiences before where she interacted with kids, initially she was reluctant to accept this show. However, her friend persuaded her to attend a mock test and she got it. Her chemistry with kids clicked instantly and the show was a big hit. Subi was mostly associated with her roles as a stand-up comedian and star anchor, and hence couldn’t concentrate on an acting journey. A fun-loving person, she was also not interested in working in soaps. Yet she has appeared in a few serials and more than 20 films.

Rajasenan’s Kanaka Simhasanam was her debut film

In her illustrious journey of nearly 2 decades in entertainment industry, she did a handful of memorable roles on big screen. Kanaka Simhasanam in 2006 was her debut film, where she played a brief role of Tripurasundari. Drama, Kaaryasthan, Detective, Panchavarna Thatha, Elsamma Enna Aankutty, Grahanathan, 101 Wedding, Thaskara Lahala, Happy Husbands, Dolls, Killadi Raman, Lucky Jokers etc a few more big screen roles.

She succumbed to death on February 22, 2023. She was in ventilator last few days. It was a big shock to Malayalis, when her death news came out in the morning. A few days before her death, she had put a video in Facebook saying, her undisciplined life and food habits made her ill. Through the video, she also told that, following the resting days during pandemic, she got so busy with her stage shows that she cared less about her health. She also admitted that she skipped taking medicines and didn’t take proper care of herself even while going through serious health issues.
